Sonography slip up?

Before I start I want to clarify I am happy with either a boy or a girl. We had the worst news possible at a 20 scan last year so we are just happy we have a healthy baby in there this time.

But what happened was...

Yesterday we had our 20 week scan, the sonography was lovely and knew our history. When we knew all was we well we asked NOT to know the sex if possible.

Then throughout the scan the sonographer used the term 'baby' but called it 'he' twice. I didn't like to ask as I didn't want to interrupt them when they were taking measurements. Also I wasn't sure if my husband noticed so I didn't highlight it.

Then she gave us the photo...
What does anyone think?

I'm not cross with the sonographer as she may just use the term he or it might be a slip up. It must be hard to not subconsciously say he or she once you've seen it on screen.

@Mumoftwoyoungkids

When my SIL sent us a pic of their scan you could definitely see a willy. Except the baby was a girl. (Presumably it was the umbilical cord.)

With my dB and SIL they were told by the sonographer that the baby was a girl. Except he came out with an extra bit! Luckily DB and SIL loathe pink!

Sorry - the reason loathing pink is relevant is that the room was a unisex colour. He still went home from hospital in pink though - I’d given them all dd’s old clothes and she was the first girl in the family for over 50 years - MIL bought us a LOT of pink!

@ExCwmbranDweller mine were at the Gwent but there's a posh new hospital now in Cwmbran for us now!

@Namechange543 thanks for the professional opinion I really appreciate it. On a different note how do sonographers cope with giving out bad news? I remember at the time being in shock but still feeling sorry for the person telling me.

Thanks for everyone's replies it's been great to read them all.

I second what others have said. You need a potty shot to accurately see genitals so it's still a surprise.

Congratulations Thanks

@IKEA888 so sorry for what you've gone through it's absolutely devastating isn't it. But wonderful you have your girl. I have two girls so feel incredibly lucky.

@Mumoftwoyoungkids can't imagine being actually told the wrong info! My eldest is 21 and in those days they said "we can give you an idea but don't paint the nursery".

20 week scan sonographer gave no clue. 36 week sonographer said ‘he’ throughout. I was convinced I’d seen boy bits. DD emerged on Monday very clearly as a DD (although due to my being convinced she would be male and the stacks of drugs I was on after 20 hours of active labour I did ask DH to double check, multiple times, until the doctor told me to be quiet Grin)

@Dollywilde those drugs are crazy! I remember calling the call button for a nurse to come and help me as there were lions roaming round the ward. She just smiled and said ok, no problem. 😂
Congrats on the new baby.

I didn’t find out what I was having in my last pregnancy and they always referred as he. Even at appointments where they didn’t do a scan (just when monitoring etc). I see where you’re coming from thinking it’s a boy in that picture but I don’t think babies genitals would be that clear On a side on shot. Even when they specifically look for them it can be shed to distinguish depending on position so I doubt they’d have had it that easy. It’s probably a foot or a leg or something.

When I had my 20 week scan I was continued my babies foot was back to front because of how the scan looked. I’ve since learnt things on scans should be taken with a pinch of salt sometimes!
