Low lying placenta

Had my 20 week scan today and my placenta is completely covering my cervix. I did some research and it says that 90% of placentas move out of the way but it was difficult to know if that was just low lying placentas or ones that are completely covering. Baby girl is also transverse at the moment.

Does anyone have any positive stories of a placenta like mine at this 20 weeks moving out of the way or do I need to bring myself around to the idea of a c-section?

Did they book you in for another scan in the third trimester? There’s a lot of threads on here if you search.

mummatobeat33 · 19/08/2020 19:07

@peachypetite yes i will have a 32 week scan. I only posted as most of the other threads I have found seem to about just lying placentas rather than completely covering.

Mine is low too, but not totally covering. I’m just waiting for my next scan, nothing else I can do.

I guess it depends on your definition of a positive outcome. With my second and third children I had fully covered cervix and had CS in both cases. DD1 was the first one, she was transverse until about a week before birth.

I know 5 friends/friends of friends who had placenta praevia, and all had routine CS 2 weeks before due date. I was unstable with hospital admissions (2 admissions with DD1, 6 admissions with DD2).

But, I have 2 amazing girls, now 13 and 9 and I consider them successful outcomes despite difficult journeys.

Happy to answer any questions if I can.

Thats good to hear @AuditAngel. We've had such a journey to get to this point. Infertillity and allsorts.

I suppose I am just concerned now about having a bleed but had no bleeding whatsoever so far, whether I'll end up on bed rest. There was nothing said today about what I should or shouldn't be doing. I am guessing going to the gym isn't a good idea now.

Yep my placenta was doing all sorts of buggering about this pregnancy but the scan at 32 weeks showed it had moved. Like you I googled and found similar stats - I mentally prepared for a CS but didn't need one in the end.

Not sure how helpful that is - hopefully you'll know more in a few short weeks!

mummatobeat33 · 19/08/2020 19:30

@MrsMaglev were you given any guidance on what to do and not to do to stop any chance of bleeding? I've been given no information at all.

Hi @mummatobeat33 I lost my son not so long ago and I had a low lying placenta. I bled a lot and was hospitalised twice as a result of the bleeding & clots. Which led to contractions which led to early labour and my baby born prematurely.

I don’t want to scare you, I just want you to take it as easy as you can. I wish I’d gone on complete bed rest as soon as I started bleeding (I was in bed 98% of the time but I suppose I wish I’d done more). Bleeding with a low lying placenta can be scary, when you bleed, you really bleed so it’s important to get yourself checked if that does happen.

I hope yours moves up and everything goes smoothly.

Mine was covering at around 90% with DD1 at my 20 week scan so I was put in for regular internal and external scans - by around 32 weeks it had completely moved out of the way Smile

I don't know if your MW will have mentioned but I was told not to do any lifting of any sorts (including shopping) and to always keep my notes in my car with me incase I ever was rushed into hospital. When I asked what she meant she said that with some women the placenta can slip right down and come dislodged - I thought she was just panicking me but then she gave me a leaflet on it.

I didn't mean any of that to scare you if she hasn't told you I just thought I'd pass it on - but like you've said in most cases it does just move by itself Smile

I'm currently 30 weeks pregnant with a low lying placenta. I had a call with a consultant shortly after my 20 week scan but I think that was because I am high risk as I'm 40 and a FTM. She just said nothing should go in your vagina, i.e. no sex, and no horse riding, which I don't do anyway. I work as a gardener so am still very active at moment. I've not had any bleeding yet. Got a scan at 34 weeks to see if it's moved.
Good luck, I hope yours moves. It sounds very common from what I've read on here so I'm just trying not to worry about it as there's nothing to do but wait and see.

Mine completely moved !
Same thing happened at 20 week scan —- they saw it was totally covering. I took it easy , no heavy lifting, no strenuous exercise. No sex is also advised by midwife.
Went at 32 weeks it had completely moved !! By a good distance too
Best of luck. Keep the faith xx

Mine was low at 20 weeks. Midwife advised me to avoid PIV sex. Just had a 34 week scan to check on it and it's completely moved out of the way.
