Gestation sac too small for baby

Hi everyone

I posted earlier this week about having a large amount of brown discharge over the weekend and when I rang my local EPU they asked me to come in for a scan.

I had my scan today and whilst they weren't concerned about the bleeding/discharge I had, they were concerned about the size of the gestational sac.

They said the baby is fine and heartbeat ok and measured 7 weeks but gestational sac only measured 5 weeks 2 days. You could see on the scan that the sac looked tight in the baby.

The nurse ended up speaking to the consultant and I have to go back in 2 weeks for another scan to see if the sac has changed. The nurse warned me that this is high risk for miscarriage despite the baby being so well.

Just wondered if anyone had experienced this and had either good or bad outcomes?

Thanks in advance

I'm sorry I don't have an experience with this but just wanted to say that I hope everything works out for you x

I actually posted this a few weeks ago and didn't get many replies either!

I'm having twins and right from 6 weeks one twin has had a much smaller sac size. At 7 weeks the sac for the bigger twin was something like 35mm and the smaller twin was 17mm. This was almost a week behind the baby. I worked out roughly the sac was only 7mm larger than the baby and it did look really squished. Reading on google this put me high risk for miscarriage but after lots of late night internet (panic) research I read about upping my water intake - so from weeks 7 to 10 I was permanently attached to a water bottle!

At 10 weeks and then again at 12 weeks the sacs look much more evenly sized. The smaller baby is smaller that it's twin but it has a good heart beat and is growing to dates (it's twin is just growing ahead of dates) so risk of miscarriage is now low

Do you know the length of both the baby and the sac in mm? 5mm and below difference is very high risk of miscarriage but 7mm + is 75% chance of having a healthy pregnancy. Was there a good strong heartbeat? Mine at 7 weeks was around 157 bpm.

I also read that it's not related to any chromosome abnormality in the baby - it's just one of those things that happens with no reason why

Here's a photo of the sac difference at 7 weeks

Thank you so much for your reply. It's so hard to find other people who have gone through the same thing.

I think my measurements aren't looking good.
My CRL is 9.4mm and the MSD is 11mm so only 1.6mm which I know makes me very husk of miscarriage. Il put a pic of scan up. You can see that the sac is 'squashed' around baby.

It so cruel as they said baby is there and heartbeat looks good. Going to drink lots of water and hope for the best!

I have read lots of comments that suggest that because I had the internal scan that the measures and angle can be off compared with abdominal scan.

It's the two week wait for next scan which is going to be so hard. The whole time worrying if I am going to have a miscarriage at any point.

But positive pants on and hoping that little continues to grow and that that sac grows with it!

X

This is the report they gave with all the measurements.

My IVF clinic only gave me the one measurement of the sac so my MSD was probably similar to yours as the width isn't much wider than yours compared to the baby -
In fact my CRL was almost exactly the same as yours at 9.6mm with just the one dimension given of the sac at 17mm so very similar

Length ways yours looks ok plenty of space either end of the baby?

Drink lots and lots of water - literally until you feel like your sloshing 💦 💦

The private clinic where I went for the 10 week scan didn't measure the sac so don't know how much it grew just that it did and that's the most important thing

I had a check up scan yesterday and the little twin still looks squashed but I do think it depends on how the scan is done and how the sac is lying internally

Got everything crossed for you x

Thank you so much.

Yes, when you look at the scan, whilst it's squished there is room at both ends which I am seeing as a positive.

Me and my other half know the odds are against us but are remaining positive!

Drinking water like there is no tomorrow so hopefully that has an effect!

I'd forgotten we have booked a private scan next week so hopefully that will give us an indication of how things are going before the EPU scan the week after.

Will let you know how we get on.

Have my fingers crossed that everything works out for you and your babies too

X

Hi All

I just wanted to update this post for anyone looking at this in the future.

Unfortunately I started bleeding heavily yesterday and am having a miscarriage.

Sorry to say it wasn't a more positive outcome.

Fingers crossed for a rainbow baby in the future

Xxx
