When to request ELCS?

As above really. I'm approaching 30 weeks and wondering when would be best to request it? I'm guessing anytime now?

I don’t know the answer but I’m almost 32 and I would like to know if this is possible as well, I wouldn’t want a c section over a natural delivery but I would prefer it over induction and I don’t know who or when I ask this question.

mylittlesandwich · 17/08/2020 18:00

Every area is different, I was 36 weeks when I first spoke to a consultant and 38 weeks when I was booked in.

TeethingBabyHelp · 17/08/2020 18:02

I asked at my first appt with midwife. As it was maternal request I had to attend a session with a midwife to discuss my reasons before they'd then book me in with a consultant to do final sign off. This was in the south west.
It was agreed by 30 weeks and at 36 weeks I got my date

AiryFairyMum · 17/08/2020 18:02

It depends why you're requesting it? I was put in for induction at 37 weeks due to medical issues and instead requested an ELCS, which they agreed.

Brieminewine · 17/08/2020 18:04

I think it needs to be done ASAP. I told my MW at my booking appointment I wanted one, she arranged an appointment with the consultant at around 20wks and then I saw him again at 36wks to get my date.

Monkeyseesmonkeydoesnt · 17/08/2020 19:29

Precipitous first labour with pph and bimanual compression. I'm awaiting an appointment with a consultant which doesn't seem to be coming anytime soon so I want to get "on the books" before it's too late

I raised it with my midwife at 25 week appointment and just got my date at 30 weeks.
If its on your mind I'd raise at your next appointment.

lockdownpregnancy · 17/08/2020 21:04

I'm 34 weeks and on track to have an 8-9lb baby and I'm really not wanting to do it naturally with him looking like he's going to be a big lad! I'm a FTM too so I currently have no give in that region either 🤪
I'm going to ask for mine at my 36 week appointment and see what she says! Fingers crossed they will book me in ASAP given I'll literally be on the clock by that point!

mylittlesandwich · 17/08/2020 21:15

@lockdownpregnancy I had an ELCS because DS was going to be big. I felt quite vindicated when he was 10lbs 10oz.

SockQueen · 17/08/2020 21:18

@lockdownpregnancy 8-9lb is not huge and bigger baby doesn't necessarily mean harder to deliver! DS1 was 10lb (though I didn't know beforehand)!

Itsalwayssunnyupnorth · 17/08/2020 21:21

I requested at booking in with MW and had first consultant appt at 12 weeks at which point they agreed to the section and gave me my date! Maternal request due to internal injury from forceps, PPH and sepsis during first birth but the consultant actually recommended I had a section when she read my notes so that may be why they agreed and booked so early.

TenThousandSpoons0 · 17/08/2020 21:23

OP - ask your midwife about it ASAP and see if your obstetrician appointment can be expedited. For what it’s worth, they’ll want to discuss all the ins and outs with you - as CS doesn’t necessarily prevent PPH and there are other possible strategies - all individual of course. No doubt you’ve thought of all this anyway.
@theresaplaceforus by all means chat with your midwife about your preference for CS rather than induction, if induction is required - but I don’t think it’s something you could book this far in advance. You’d have to raise it if/when a discussion about induction happens - and all going well, that won’t happen at all :) CS can be booked fairly short notice in that circumstance as well.

@mylittlesandwich my god! The boys in my DH's family were all born 10lb plus! 😳
My DH is a twin and they were 7 1/2lb each! His mother deserves a medal!
My pregnancy app says baby puts on around 1lb per week between now and birth. My baby is currently around 6lb so I could potentially end up with a 12lb baby!
😫😫😫 with those sorts of calculations I'm hoping it's all crap otherwise I'm ruined! Literally! 🤪
We will just have to wait and see but I genuinely don't know how I'm going to get through the next 6 weeks as I'm going to be so much bigger every day! I'm currently trying to pluck up the courage to get myself off the sofa! I can't lean forward anymore cus baby is all in the front so I just end up in pain if I lean forward too far!
Sorry for the moan but I really am fed up! 😭

Monkeyseesmonkeydoesnt · 17/08/2020 21:56

Thanks everyone, I have another appointment next week so I will request then. All really helpful x

It’s half a pound a week (according to nhs app) 😊

Mummyspider27 · 18/08/2020 03:28

I told MW at booking in at 8 weeks, consultant appointment at 15 weeks and date given then, I would ask ASAP so you can be referred to consultant x
