Withdrawal method

Had sex during the ovulation window but have used the pull out method.

I have used this with my previous partner for 3 years and no issues however never on the most fertile days.

Am I being a bit naive in stating I think it’s unlikely to fall pregnant this way?

Yes, I would say very naive. The withdrawal method is not really a contraception at all.

This one works, by luck alone, until one day it doesn’t. If you don’t want to be pregnant, I would definitely get the MAP.

Withdrawal method....what's it a method of?
Getting pregnant that's what! Withdrawing is not contraception c'mon now!

SmileTolerantly · 15/08/2020 20:23

It is a method of contraception, in that you’re much less likely to get pregnant than you would if you proceeded in the normal way, but it’s not a brilliantly reliable one.

Assuming that your partner didn’t misjudge his timing you are pretty unlikely to get pregnant, but if it would be a disaster then doubling up with the MAP would probably be a good idea.

It worked brilliantly for us for 7 years, but we were ok with an accidental pregnancy. We have since successfully conceived deliberately.
DH has spectacular control though due to a medical circumcision that has reduced sensitivity.
We have gone back to withdrawal again now but a second pregnancy wouldn’t be a disaster. In my experience you are very unlikely to conceive but there is always the law of sod to contend with!

Thanks guys, this does take a bit of the worry off

22 out of every 100 people relying on the withdrawal method will fall pregnant. For me, that’s too much of a risk to count as contraception.

If you aren’t actually bothered about falling pregnant then fine, but if you don’t want to be pregnant you should find an alternative.

Toilenstripes · 15/08/2020 20:48

Don’t use the withdrawal method. If your cycle is predictable then it’s easy to know when you can’t have sex.

My husband and I had unprotected sex once using the pull-out method and now I'm pregnant.

Luckily, we're quite happy now the shock's worn off.

Whathastheworldbecome · 15/08/2020 21:18

I’m just curious as to whether people who fall pregnant excute it right? Was it a case of you performed it perfectly it just failed?

It's contraception in the sense it does reduce chances, but not 100% effective. My husband and I used it before TTC, but knew that if there was an accident (as in a strong swimmer rather than his timing) we wouldn't mind.

I've honestly never heard of anyone getting pregnant when using this method. If you imagine there is only a 20% chance of getting pregnant when 150million are ejaculated, it's very unlikely you'll fall pregnant if he doesn't ejaculate.

Having said that, it only takes one strong swimmer...

Bluejayway91 · 15/08/2020 21:27

It seemed to be executed fine, but you can get pregnant from pre-cum.

I'd say, if you don't want to get pregnant, don't take the risk.
