Progesterone suppositories

Hi everyone! I’m currently 6 weeks pregnant and have miscarried twice in the past around 7-8 weeks, so I’m super nervous to hit that mark and hoping this the one that sticks! My doctor prescribes with progesterone suppositories that I started taking today and believes this will help maintain the pregnancy. Wanted to hear some of your stories. Anyone else on these and had positive outcomes? Fingers crossed 🤞🏼

I have a success story whose been up since 5.20 watching Postman Pat!
I had 3 losses during clomid cycles. My gynae prescribed the pessaries ready in case I fell pregnant again. I took then week 4 to week 12. Good luck Flowers

Frannibananni · 14/08/2020 06:58

They worked for me 3 times 🙂 good luck.

Annist · 14/08/2020 14:43

Worked for me 2x times. Good luck!

I had 2 miscarriages last year, took progesterone suppositories up to 16 weeks with this pregnancy and am currently 23 weeks and all is well.

I had two miscarriages, a missed miscarriage discovered at 8 week scan in April 2019, and a chemical pregnancy in Oct 2019. I started using progesterone pessaries as soon as I got a positive test in Jan this year, and up to 16 weeks, and I'm now 35 weeks.

Name change 'cos I keep posting about DC's health separate from my other posting history.

On the whole I'd say do whatever your doctors recommend to increase the chances of keeping your pregnancy (and congrats, btw!). But in the spirit of "informed consent" (and having had IVF myself) I thought I'd mention this.

It's worth having a quick scan of this, OP. It suggests the use of progesterone supplements during fertility treatment may be associated with an increased risk of hypospadias in boys.
jamanetwork.com/journals/jamapediatrics/fullarticle/486138

I used them and DS was born with a hypospadias, and I've always wondered if the two were linked (anecdote is not data, sample size of one, etc. etc., but even so).

Obviously it's a case of weighing risks - the possibility of no baby at all versus a boy with increased risk of hypospadias. The baseline risk in the population as a whole is about 1 in 300 births (of male children, obviously) so a 2 to 3 fold increase takes that up to 1 in 150, maybe 1 in 100.

It's a pretty mild birth defect in the grand scheme of things, but can require corrective surgery.

I've had 4 MCs and used it once before and it didn't work. This time my consultant advised only taking it if I start bleeding, which I did at around 8 weeks and I am now 25 weeks pregnant.
Most MCs I think are due to chromosomal abnormalities (two of mine definitely were - didn't have the 1st two tested as you have to have three MCs before they're tested) so I don't think progesterone can prevent that.

May as well take it though if your consultant prescribes it.

Mamafj · 22/10/2020 21:00

Can i ask if you ever had bloods to indicate low progesterone? I've had 2 mc and am awaiting my private obgyn appointment to hopefully have some progesterone prescribed for when i get my next positive. I just want to take them as precautionary. The nhs doesnt refer you till youve had 3 losses so having to take my own measures and go private :( xx

paigeleeforever182 · 23/10/2020 16:55

I didn’t, which I thought was odd. But dr. was pretty certain progesterone would help. I’ve been told by other drs as well that there is no negative affects to taking it, so if you talk to your dr it shouldn’t be a problem. I’m now 16 weeks and find out next week if we’re having a little boy or girl! I took the progesterone up until 10 weeks and I 100% believe this is what helped! Good luck to you, I hope you get your rainbow soon!

I’ve recently been prescribed progesterone. I’ve had 3 miscarriages this year. All ended around 6 weeks. I’m hoping the progesterone and aspirin help me.

It’s nice to hear some positive experiences.

My doctor told me to take them once I get a positive pregnancy test. But I’m reading online that maybe I should take them from a few days after ovulation. Does anyone know?

paigeleeforever182 · 11/11/2020 19:33

I called my dr as soon as I got a positive because my next apt wasn’t until the time I would’ve been 4 weeks. I was super nervous up until that point but he said it would fine to wait until then. I’m 19 weeks now and all has been well! But if you have them already, whenever you feel like you wanna take them! They gave me a ton of reassurance, never going through a pregnancy again without asking for them

I am currently on the after three losses. I am just over 9 weeks (furthest I have got!)

Saw little wiggly bean and little arm and leg pegs last week ...

I think this is 100% down to the pessisaries x

XjustagirlX · 14/11/2020 09:16

@TTC1991 amazing news. Did you start taking them a few days after ovulation or once you had a positive test?

PostingaboutDCshealth · 14/11/2020 09:22

Congratulations - that's brilliant news Flowers.

TTC1991 · 14/11/2020 09:44

Yes the day after I got my BFP I have too take them one in the morning and one before bed - 🤞🤞

Chamallow · 07/01/2021 21:55

I know this is an old post but can I ask if you were taking a synthetic progestin or natural bioidentical progesterone? I have to have IVF too and I wonder if fertility know about this and ignore it, or whether the research overall proves no link :/

I'm not sure, it's called cylogest. Currently 17 weeks now with baby boy 💙 up to now all healthy think the progesterone cracked it!

Currently cutting down to come off which is scary 💙💙💙
