Hypnobirthing

Hi all,

I'm looking into signing up for the digital hypnobirthing pack from the Positive Birth Company. Does anybody have any experience with hypnobirting? Would you recommend it?

Phenomenal - I had one paracetamol with my son (only took one as I didn't know whether I might want another one).

The affirmations are a bit cringy but both my births were truly magical. Enjoy

I’m really enjoying the PBC so far. My husband is watching too and really into it.
xx

I tried it. I really went into it desperately wanting it to work.
But it just didn't. It was a bit to woo for me.
But I would say try it. It didn't take a lot of time or resources and if it does work then you've gained something priceless. If it doesn't then you've lost nothing.

I’ve just had a look and can’t see if it’s HypnoBirtbing or hypnobirthing. Nothing works for everyone - is there maybe a taster session you could try?

Does anyone have a link?

I used a CD 8 years ago which has long gone and I can't find out what it was.
It had 'breathing in golden light' and something about being on a beach.

I found it worked really well with DC2 and 3 and would like to find it again or a similar one.

Mongan Method? Mickey created the HypnoBirthing classes.

Have a look at their free YouTube videos or buy her the PBC book first.
I enjoyed and found elements of the PBC really useful (particularly the up breathing, and measures to keep calm). It was very informative.
However it harps on and on about if you do hypnobirthing correctly you can have a low pain natural birth which just isn't true. I ended up with entirely back labour then emergency forceps in theatre. Disaster right? I genuinely believe PBC and hypnobirthing is what kept me calm and in control and not freaking out when my babies heart rate plummeted multiple times. I am naturally a stress head, worst case scenario worrier and over anaylse things. I think hypnobirthing helped me accept what was happening, make decisions calmly and keep breathing. Forceps delivery (and the spinal block) were absolutely easy and nothing to write home about.

But read the book or watch the videos before you buy the online course.

The Freya app was excellent for early labour too

I used the Maggie Howell CD and book, and can honestly say it kept me calm and focussed, it doesn't take away the pain, but it really helped me :)

I did a course before I had DS. I really rated it. But it's not for everyone.

NCParanoia · 13/08/2020 22:24

I had the same one grumpy! It was a handmedown from my SIL.
my experience OP is positive. I did hypnobirthing but not the whole hog. I jist chose the bits that worked for me (mainly educating myself about the physical process of giving birth and any potential interventions so I knew what to expect, the breathing technique, and understanding thay remaining calm was the best way to get it done quickly!). I had two fast vaginal deliveries with no pain relief, one on dry land one in the water. Both challenging, painful but wonderful experiences. I'm not saying its down to the hypnobirthing, thiught that deffo helped, but i also was young, healthy and low risk. I'd say to get yourself educated about the process of birth too as well as the relaxation stuff.

I’ve just got the £50 deal with positive birth company! Looking forward to starting it!

DeepTreacle · 13/08/2020 22:27

I used the PBC digital pack for both my births. I would recommend seeing it as one of a range of tools at your disposal rather than the only way to do things or a guarantee of a particular kind of birth. I found the breathing techniques helpful but developed my own visualisations for relaxation. In my first birth I had time for that and I think it helped me conserve energy levels for a long labour, but in my second (less than two hours) all I had time for was the breathing techniques to get me through the rapidly ramping up contractions and they still helped. I know a number of women who have found hypnobirthing helpful through many kinds of interventions or planned CS too as a way to feel calmer and more in control. I found it very helpful but I had the mindset of it being one of a range of tools at my disposal

rosina38 · 13/08/2020 22:28

I did the positive birth company online course it was great - get your birth partner to watch the videos with you

You also get access to a Facebook group where other ladies post their positive birth stories - it was so helpful to read these in the weeks before my due date

I also bought the Freya app - helped me so much in labour... I coped with paracetamol and arrived at the birth centre 9.5cm dilated

Birth was the most challenging but most amazing thing I've ever done and I look back on it with happy memories - and that is thanks to hypnobirthing for sure

Metallicalover · 13/08/2020 22:32

Another vote for Maggie Howell, I got the tracks from I tunes. It helped me focus on my breathing. It didn't take the pain away and I used gas and air!

Illegitiminoncarborundum · 13/08/2020 22:33

I downloaded the ihypnobirth app on my iPhone.

It was great and much cheaper than all the other options!

I ended with an epidural and EMCS but I still believe the hypnobirthing helped me stay calm thorough out

Grumpy19 · 13/08/2020 22:45

@NCParanoia can you remember what it's called?
I'd love to buy another copy for this one.

LeeMiller · 13/08/2020 23:05

I did the positive birth company one. The videos explaining the stages of labour were really clear, and I liked the breathng techniques. Some of it wasn't for me or wasn't important in the end (totally forgot about setting the scene with my music, candles, scents etc once I was actually in fullblown labour). I had a birth with no pain relief, not even gas & air, and the PBC breathing and visualisations, as well as understanding what stage I was at, helped me stay calm and feel a sense of control (however illusory). They definitely helped me deal with the pain, though it was still pretty bloody painful!

The only downside is that I do think the course and the other hypnobirthing materials I used (there were a lot of them!) overplays the idea that by planning and preparing you can ensure a low-pain, peaceful, natural birth, when in reality that is mostly down to luck. It also feeds the idea that pain relief/intervention/induction etc are automatically bad and to be avoided, which isn't always helpful. I know a couple of women who were really into hynobirthing when pregnant and then struggled with feelings of failure when they didn't get the 'natural' birth they had planned. But if you recognise hypnobirthing as a potentially useful tool - maybe the only one, or maybe one of many that you might need - then I think it can be really helpful.
