Pregnancy pains... please help!

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone could reassure me that some pains I am having daily are okay. I am going to apologise in advance for TMI.
At about 6 weeks pregnant when I woke up, about half an hour later have really bad pains that would only going when I managed to go to the toilet.
I am now nearly 9 weeks and these pains are happening every few hours and even waking me during the night. The pain feels like the worst period pains ever and stop me in my tracks.
I am sure this is trapped wind and related to my bowels but god I am worrying that it could cause problems for the baby and maybe even cause a miscarriage. I have had two previous missed miscarriages so I am already super anxious.

Can anyone recommend anything to help with the pain or how to prevent this?
Is anyone else going through this?

Thanks in advance :) x

It's hard to say, there are lots of possible reasons (pregnancy can play havoc with your bowel movements for example!) but you should definitely speak to a healthcare professional, especially if the pain is severe enough to be keeping you up at night.

You can call the early pregnancy unit for advice, or you can call your GP or midwife. They'll be able to investigate and hopefully reassure you.

Hi,

Thank you for the advice. I have spoken to the GP they tell me to speak to the midwife and the midwife tells me to speak to the GP so no one will help me or do anything.
I really don't know what to do, I get things are bad because of coronavirus but it's unfair that no one will see me.

From reading your post (and coming at it from personal experience, no medical training!) it could be constipation? Are you getting plenty of fibre from your diet?
My OB/GYN was able to prescribe me lactulose at 18 weeks as my bowel movements were few and far between, and v.painful when they did happen!

Taylor2005 · 14/08/2020 22:50

It got so bad today I rang a different hospital EPU and they are seeing me on Monday.
I have also stopped drinking water as it seems to make it worse. Fingers crossed they will be able to get to the bottom of it.
Thank you for the suggestions :)

I'm really glad you're getting seen, OP. I'm sorry you've had such a crap time trying to get care. Let us know how you get on and please take care not to get dehydrated.

Update: the scan showed baby and heartbeat as healthy and nothing that shouldn't be there.
So referred to GP... who won't do anything. I was up most of the night in agony and no closer to a solution :(

This happened to me at about 4-5.weeks. pain felt similar to when i misscarried and i would cry with the pain. I was seen in EPU and they put it down to bowel pain due to hormones, womb stretching and constipation. I didnt feel like typical constipation pain though but 2 laxidos a day really helped settle the pain and ease the pressure on the bowel

It does feel like really intense period pains and like when I had the mmc tablets.
I had a peppermint tea earlier and it really helped. Then I read you shouldn't have in early pregnancy so now panicking like mad.

Hey OP
I've been going through this pain since the beginning of my pregnancy. I'm now 15weeks...
This is my second pregnancy and the pain was so bad it felt like period cramps. I had to go A&E one night (at 8 weeks) as it got that bad. They ran checks and said everything was fine and it could be trapped gas or worst an etopic pregnancy. The said they would refer me for an early scan but nothing came of it.

I was really nervous at my 12 week scan as I didn't know what to expect but the baby is just fine and measured well. At 15 weeks I'm still going through pain and I've now come to terms that it's most likely trapped gas as I'm extremely windy and that helps ease the pain. I'm using rennie for the gas which seems to offer some relief. I'm thinking of trying gaviscon as I've heard that helps as well.

Hope it's nothing to worry about.

AbbiiPaigeee · 18/08/2020 19:36

I drank peppermint tea between weeks 6-11 to help with my nausea - never heard of not drinking it in early pregnancy so don't worry about it too much! I also had a lot of discomfort early on though don't think I could class it as pain like you're saying yours is. I agree though that it could be trapped wind as I had a lot of this, along with your uterus stretching which likely isn't helping. Have you tried paracetamol & a hot water bottle maybe? Hope you get sorted soon x

Taylor2005 · 18/08/2020 20:15

@AbbiiPaigeee thank you so much for sharing with me. It sounds a lot like how I am feeling so hopefully all is okay in there.
It was so bad overnight but has eased since lunchtime today. I will see how it goes overnight again.
My next scan is 8th September so all I can really do is keep my fingers crossed.

@Remi92
You have put my mind at rest so much. I don't think I'll ever stop panicking but hopefully it is just my bodies way of adjusting to the pregnancy.
I am hoping that will eases off at the weeks go on. It was brutal overnight but has eased since lunch. I think if it is that bad overnight again I am going to go to the EPU and sit there until they give me an answer. Id try anything to be fair!!

I have had some pains - they have woken me in the night too. I think it was trapped wind - I've cut onions and coleslaw out of my diet and haven't had the pains since.

Hope you’re feeling better soon @Taylor2005 and that they give you some decent advice.

If it is trapped wind, which is what I had badly 6-8 weeks-ish with almost identical sounding symptoms including waking me up, there are a few things I’ve tried which seemed to help - or at least, I feel better now than I did! Just in case any of it helps you at all:

  • Don’t lay down for at least an hour or two after eating. For me that means a super early dinner because I’m so tired Grin.
-Rennie sell a tablet called deflatine (I’m sure there are others) that you can take during pregnancy. They’re quite pricey but they do help, and I’ve taken a couple when it’s woken me up in the middle of the night.
  • Walking, even just around the living room at a snails pace
  • rub your stomach in circles. Honestly not sure how much that helps but I tried everything!
  • as you’ve said, if you can go to the loo, it seems to help.
  • i avoided fizzy drinks because all the advice said to but actually a little bit of lemonade would help me burp!

Hope you’re feeling better soon.

I had this and it helped to changed my prenatal vitamin to one that didnt contain iron and to take earlier in the day (around 5pm) with some food. Midwife suggested the iron could have been causing gas/constipation. I replaced the branded prenatal with a chemist unbranded one and it helped massively
