Dating scan too early??

Recently had my BFP and phoned the doctor to start getting things booked in.
Had a bit of a saga with my dates so according to BBT etc I ovulated three weeks later than the first day of my last period (and the several BFNs) would indicate. So the doctor puts me at 9 weeks instead of the 6 something weeks I think I am. We’ve just had the letter through for the dating (12 week) scan but I think we will only be 9 weeks. I know the first scan is supposed to be really anywhere between 8 and 14 weeks but are there good / bad bits to having it done earlier rather than later??
I mean it might turn out that me and my dates are completely wrong Grin but I’d be interested to hear other people’s experiences.

If it's too early they'll just book you to come back

As @omg35 said they will just book in another scan. My first scan was 10+6 and they couldn't do all my measurements (midwife got me at 11+6 hence the reason it was booked when it was). They just booked me in for 2 weeks later.

If you ovulated three weeks after your last period (average is two) your doctors 9 weeks is probably only out by 1 week, I'd say you are 8 weeks. But until they scan you they pretty rigidly stick to your last period to date you. At 11 weeks for your scan (if you are 1 week behind their dates) they will probably be able to do the measures but if not will just rebook you, its not an issue at all 😊

@Workingmama1 I think I ovulated six weeks 😂 after my last period (unheard of)!

Thank you all for the reassurance - it’ll be a bit of a faff if I do have to go again but better than not getting it done properly right? And we might get extra scan pictures out of it (silver lining) Smile

I'm surprised you doctor agreed to date it from your ovulation date based on BBT alone which is notoriously unreliable Rather than the accepted way of dating usual day of last period - bear in mind your midwife WONT accept it and will change it to period dates.

(I had IVF and certain on conception dates but they only use period dates on all the forms)

But like others have said they'll just re scan you if you aren't far enough along

mountaingoat83 · 13/08/2020 17:56

@ivfdreaming my doctor wouldn’t use the ovulation date (totally understandable) so we are having to use the last period date for now :)

Bonus extra scan :) I think it would only be an issue if you thought you were going to be less than 6 weeks at scan - as sometimes that means you won’t see a heartbeat which creates a bit of anxiety! Sounds like it’s win-win for you :)

Metallicalover · 13/08/2020 20:44

I found even with IVF you were classed as 2 weeks pregnant even when you weren't pregnant as you can pinpoint when the egg and sperm met!!
When calculating pregnancy dates your already classes as pregnant before you are!
Confusing! Xxx

If its too early they cant do the measurements for some of the tests so they check what they can based on the stage and they rebook you for a later date for the rest, they did this with mine and actually felt like I got a bonus scan seeing my baby on the screen again

NoGinNotComingIn · 13/08/2020 21:03

My dates were 2 weeks out with my second child. As I was 2 weeks behind (was only 11 and not 13 weeks going off last period) I just had to go back 2 weeks later for another scan as they couldn't do all the checks as I wasn't far enough along, I think it was the heart they couldn't check.

mountaingoat83 · 14/08/2020 09:55

Aw, it’s nice to think we could get a ‘bonus’ scan! 😊 I think I was just worried that they’d think we were wasting the radiographer’s time by going ‘too early’ but all we / the doctor can go on is period dates so what can you do?! 😄

At my 12 week scan I was to early so they booked me another scan for around 13 weeks. So I would go to get a rough guide of dates.
However each scan changed my due date so you won't get a definitive due date until 12ish weeks

Poppyismyfavourite · 14/08/2020 11:49

Yeah at my 12 week scan I only measured at 11 weeks. So they just booked another one 2 weeks later.

Chanel05 · 14/08/2020 11:57

You'll likely be asked to return for a later scan. I knew exactly when I ovulated so just brought forward the first day of my lmp when I made my booking appointment to appease the 28 day cycle theory.

lydia771 · 14/08/2020 12:25

My periods are irregular so when I had my dating scan I was actually 7 weeks 4 days (but it had been 12 weeks since my last period) so they just rebooked me after the scan for 4 weeks later. I knew myself I was only around 7 weeks and made it clear to the sonographer before the scan, your not wasting anyone's time it's just the protocol they have to go by your last period Smile
