Should I quit caffeine altogether?

I drink one cup of coffee a day, I’ve read conflicting reports online. Should it just cut it out completely to be safe?

For what it’s worth, I didn’t - I had one cup of normal a day and then had decaf after that. 39 weeks today and no ill effects!

HathorX · 12/08/2020 12:45

I did. Why take any risk? Plenty of other things to drink .

SerenityNowwwww · 12/08/2020 12:45

I cut out caffeine and only had one decaf coffee in the morning on my way into work. Otherwise just the very occasional Coke. Odd cup of tea.

You can drink coffee:

The recommendation is 200mg a day 1 coffee is totally fine!!

FluffyKittensinabasket · 12/08/2020 12:50

Thank you, I’ve read some American studies that suggest no caffeine is safe. The trouble is with pregnancy is that there is so much conflicting advice!

I cut out caffeine just because I was drinking 2-3 double shot lattes every day, so it seemed like a good time to quit full stop! Went to decaf after that. But a cup a day isn't going to have any ill effects Smile

Marmite27 · 12/08/2020 13:00

I did, I only had one or two cups of tea a day. Switched to caffeine free. I never went back, it’s been about 6 years now.

Llamapolice · 12/08/2020 13:01

I didn't either and mine was an IVF pregnancy, there's no reason to really, a small amount is safe.

GoshHashana · 12/08/2020 13:34

I majorly cut down while TTC, from at least three teas and a coffee each day, to one cup of tea. I've carried this through pregnancy so far.

AlviesMam · 12/08/2020 13:41

I drink decaf coffee can't taste the difference

Sairafina · 12/08/2020 14:01

I'm having half a cup of coffee in the morning, and another half in the afternoon

emma911030 · 12/08/2020 14:30

I did the same as @mable88 I had a normal cup of tea in the first thing and then drank decaf the rest of the day. However I will have the odd can of coke and I do enjoy chocolate. I have tried to eat more whites chocolate (unsure if this has as much caffeine in it or not thinking about it) I just try and be sensible. A lot of people still drink alcohol and smoke through pregnancy and I sometimes think well I don't smoke and I haven't had a drop of alcohol since I found out at 5 weeks. I'm now 20 weeks so I'm sure a little extra caffeine on an odd day isn't going to be the end of the world for me.

Paris2019 · 12/08/2020 15:16

I went off coffee, but have a cup of tea about 3 times a week, and the odd can of coke (plus the odd chocolate treat) - it's well within the recommended limits so i'm not worrying about it.

Oatmilk1 · 12/08/2020 16:23

The studies are difficult to interpret. Guidelines vary country to country.

Do what you feel comfortable with and just cos you do something one day doesn't mean you have to do it the next day or every day.

Have one coffee and then decaf after or have decaf as your go to except for special circumstances or drink caffeine up to NHS daily guideline and then nothing after.

Oatmilk1 · 12/08/2020 16:24

Having said that, I have never seen anything saying 1 Cup coffee a day is an issue (provided you arent mainline Coca-Cola or other caffeine for the rest of the day...)

Personally I have a double espresso every morning, but am decaf or nothing after that.

sooveritalready · 12/08/2020 16:37

I did but I've had 5 mc so don't take any risks

ShyTown · 12/08/2020 16:41

I’m in the US and my doctor says a cup a day is fine so not sure about those studies? I have one every morning, couldn’t get through the day with the toddler otherwise!

LoveSunshine01 · 12/08/2020 18:01

I've gone to a cup of half caffeine and half decaf in the morning (coffee grains not instant), which means if I need more emergency caffeine later in the day I can do it without worrying that I've already used my 'allowance' and if I don't, I'm well under the recommended per day which is a bonus in my eyes. I used to drink about 5 cups of proper strong coffee on a normal work day... seems insane now!!

ilovetrees30 · 12/08/2020 18:03

I have one cup a day. I was on decaf before pregnancy but bizarrely since being pregnant if I don't have that one cup I end up with a migraine that paracetamol wont even touch. One cup a day is fine

carlablack · 12/08/2020 18:17

I quit all caffeinated beverages because I could. I was not addicted, only liked the taste. I do miss them though Sad

TheAquaticDuchess · 12/08/2020 18:18

The NHS - which takes a very risk averse approach to pregnancy restrictions says 200mg per day is safe. That’s up to 2 cups of instant coffee, or just shy of 3 cups of tea.

AdoraBell · 12/08/2020 18:22

I had to, due to carrying twins I had palpitations after 2 sips of coffee. My doctor said that 1/2 cups per day would be okay normally.

If you don’t have any adverse symptoms with just one coffee then carry on.
