Private 20 week scan

I have my 20 week scan in a couple of weeks and it looks like my hospital are still not allowing partners. My DH is quite gutted, as his friend recently got to go to his wife's (different hospital) and was raving about how amazing it was to see all the different parts of the baby in so much detail.

We thought we might get a private scan so he can see it, but our local place only seems to do a more basic 'growth scan' where I think they do a few measurements but not the same level of detail. Does anyone know if it's possible to get a private scan which essentially replicates the NHS 20 week one?

I’m 23wks and when had my 20wk scan no partners allowed at our hospital. We booked a private well-being and gender scan at window to the womb so he could see baby too. It wasn’t same length or depth as 20 wk NHS scan but Sonographer checked through head, heart and showed us how things looked healthy and lastly checked the sex of the baby. It cost £60 but I would recommend if you can afford it as my partner loved opportunity to get to see baby and we got further confirmation that she’s looking nice and healthy too.

I got a private 4D scan at window to the womb aswell. It was great not very lengthy but you get to see baby clearly and go home with pictures of their face and a video.

I've had 2 X 20 week scans (plus a rescan) and neither was anything like what your friend described! Both times we've had a quick look at the baby and most of the appointment is the sonographer taping and clicking away at a screen you can't see (certainly from a mum's point of view, think my DH could see more, I had a great view of the ceiling).

Of course it is, I have all my scans privately.

Where about are you? I have mine done at a private obstetrician - so not just one of the ‘fun’ scam places - for want of a better word. Although, these have moved on in the past few years and they seem to be more medical than just getting the nice photos.

Wankpuffin · 11/08/2020 11:59

Not SCAM, scan!! Not saying they are a scam before I get jumped on!

MissHoney85 · 11/08/2020 12:03

@Wankpuffin how do you go about finding a private obstetrician? (Sorry if that's a stupid question!) I think that's the kind of thing we'd want - DH especially is a bit sceptical of Window to the Womb after our community midwife bad mouthed them!

I went to Beard Mill Clinic for my 12 week and 20 week scan so my partner could come and it was fantastic very detailed scans. The clinic is in Oxfordshire.

@MissHoney85 it depends where you are. You can google your city. I’m in the west Midlands, there is good clinic here run by a Fetal medicine specialist. If you are within a good distance to London then there is the Fetal Medicine Centre in Harley street who are amazing (and loads of others).

I’ve had three pregnancies with a mix of private and NHS care all over the country, I prefer the private scans as to be honest, the machines they use are superior and I’m quite fat. There’s never been an issue with them, where as when I’ve had to have nhs scans as well (one hospital refused to take the measurements from the private ones and wanted their own), they have always had problems seeing what they needed to.

If you want to PM me, Maybe I can help Smile

Wankpuffin · 11/08/2020 12:11

@rosiewalker they are excellent. Also run by a Fetal medicine specialist. They picked up a problem with my friends
baby that had been Missed and it saved his life - she is eternally greatful fo them!

Babybond/ultrasound direct to a full 20 week anomoly scan if there is one of those in your area? we've had a few scans with them early on and found them really good. £180 in our area.

MissHoney85 · 11/08/2020 12:41

Thanks for all the suggestions! I'm in Surrey, looks like Ultrasound Direct have a place not too far from me so that might be an option.

@MissHoney85 I used this place when I was in Guildford www.thesurreyparkclinic.co.uk/diagnostics/

MissHoney85 · 11/08/2020 13:01

@Wankpuffin I used them for my early scan, they were the place my midwife recommended! I looked on their website though and it didn't seem like they offered anything particularly detailed. I called and asked if it's possible to get something more detailed but the person I spoke to didn't seem to know any more than what's on the website.

I have a feeling the OP won't be back but anyway without knowing the child's age it's difficult to comment on the food situation - you say he likes "mushy" food - at a nursery there are set meals so it's not always going to be to his liking/preference- if you want more control send him to a childminder with a packed lunch?

First days nerves for you and him are always going to happen but I think you are too fixated on this app

Sorry cross posted!!
