I'm struggling to find any I like but not sure if they're even needed or not

I haven't used one with my DD who is 8 months old. She sleeps fine without one. I don't think they're an absolute need but thats just in my experienceSmile

We had one. It was completely unused, it only played music for about 2 mins so just as ds was about to doze of it would stop, so ds didn’t fall asleep. We ended up getting a monitor that played a lullaby and that worked much better.

You can always buy one after the baby has arrived if you think they may like it.

We had a lovely felt one that a family friend got from IKEA that went over the cradle in the living room when DS was tiny, and he would go mad batting at it, but we never had one for the cot. Got him an Ollie the owl night light/white noise but he just throws him across the room 🤦

NoGinNotComingIn · 11/08/2020 10:28

Never had one, we just had a Ewan the sheep, worked well with our children. We bought it out of desperation with our first who just refused to sleep anywhere but in our arms, the white noise setting worked a charm. I think most people just buy cot mobiles to look pretty in their nursery rather than practical reasons.

No. You can only safely use them before baby can sit up. At this age, baby likely spends a lot of time sleeping on you, in a small bedside crib or in various areas around the house if you follow the SIDS guidelines. By the time the baby can sleep in their own room, they’re 6 months old, starting to sit up and will need the mobile removing anyway! It’s such a small window mobiles can be used and baby won’t spend much time in their cot during that time anyway.

Completely pointless and useless! Look nice but that’s about it! Save your money for a nice print or wall hanging for the nursery instead!

I have been given two and returned them to the owner after a couple of months as of no use!
Baby barely looked at them and wasn't interested really. Also, he never felt asleep in his cot on his own, mobiles or not....

I wouldn't buy one...

theruffles · 11/08/2020 11:10

I was going to make my own but it never got finished. We never used one and I think really they're just there for decoration. Knowing my DD now, she would have had it down and dismantled as soon as she could reach it!

Spam88 · 11/08/2020 11:36

I found them handy for keeping my babies entertained in the cot while I showered, but I never left them on at night and don't think they really have much purpose. Definitely not essential!

itsmylifebonjovi · 11/08/2020 11:51

We had one but put it over the changing table to distract/entertain DS when he was getting his nappy changed...he loved it!

I didn't put one over the cot as I didn't want him to get distracted when trying to fall asleep and definitely didn't miss it.

itsmylifebonjovi · 11/08/2020 11:51

Oh, and the one we had was a really cute Miffy one that matched the colours of his nursery..

Wankpuffin · 11/08/2020 11:54

I’ve had them for both babies. Useless for getting them to sleep and Christ, I find the music really, really depressing. I can’t stand classical music anyway but the one my Dd has especially used to make me want to rip my ears off Grin

But both enjoyed looking at the animals/shapes going round and it was handy to keep them occupied and happy for a few mind while I went to make a cup of tea/tidied or had a quick shower.

I’ve got one for this baby when she’s born too.

RedRumTheHorse · 11/08/2020 11:57

Don't buy one. If you get one gifted to you then use it.

I was given one from someone who was given 2 when they had a baby. It was on my DD cot for about 2 months while she was asleep and then it was given to another much older child. I think the older child has got more use out of it.

Sanch1 · 11/08/2020 12:34

You dont have to have one. I made one for my youngest as it looked nice in her room, she's 4 now and still has it over her bed Grin.

HarrietM87 · 11/08/2020 14:01

We had one given to us as a present and we hung it over the changing mat. He hated having his nappy changed at first and it was a great distraction. I don’t think it would have helped him sleep at all as he was too interested in it!
