Hospital clothes for baby

Just wondering what clothes everyone is planning on packing for baby in hospital?

I'm having a November baby and was just wondering what I should pack? What clothes? What size? How many of each item etc? xx

JoJo mama's newborn is up to 9lbs I believe so that would be fine for the vast majority of newborns. Always worth looking at the size guide.

Unless your baby is showing up as very big on the scans, I would go for newborn and tiny baby. My 1st was 8 pounds and newborn were roomy but not ridiculously so. My second was early and 6 pounds and even tiny baby swamped them!

From what I've seen newborn is generally up to 7.8lbs whereas one month is 10lbs...

My son was 8lb 11oz and I had a mix of newborn and first size (which I think was actually smaller) he didn’t fit into any of it but we luckily had a gift bag in the car with some up to 1 month a friend had given us the day before. All my nicely planned (and washed ) outfits went home unworn! Luckily my husband went home and brought back more bigger stuff.
I’m due number 2 in October and won’t be packing my bag fully for a while. I will have all the newborn bits together and all the 1 month together so that I can make a call when it’s needed (E.g. if I’m induced at 37 weeks I’ll take newborn, if baby comes naturally at 42 weeks I’ll go straight to 1 month)

I’m expecting to just need the 1 month and if I didn’t already have newborn I wouldn’t bother buying it again

I'm a ftm to a little girl born yesterday.
She was 6lb 13 and asdas "first size" is a little big in her. It's most noticeable in the sleepsuits but she's perfectly fine in them. I did have a look at the size range for the size below and across a lot of stores it tops out at 7lbs so I think for us first size was right.
We have been in a day and a half so far and are on our 3rd vest and sleepsuits combo. We are likely to be in for 72h I think we have another 4 sets of clothes which will hopefully be about right and includes 2 0-3months just in case. My partner goes home each evening so can bring stuff in if needed.
If anything it is different clothes for me I'm asking him to bring in as it's me that's struggling with the heat of the ward!

Congratulations scientist ...
OP Just be aware (if your local NHS is the same as mine) that as it currently stands there are no visitors allowed on wards, so don't rely on extra stuff being able to be brought in

Raindrop87 · 11/08/2020 05:13

That's my concern, I can't see restrictions changing and so I'm conscious I'll really need to plan ahead for what I need!

We just got given a 'hello world' babygro, it is a Disney one, but not sure where it was purchased.

SnuggyBuggy · 11/08/2020 07:10

Hopefully they'll increase the luggage allowance

I had a big baby so he went straight into 0-3. A woman I made friends with had a baby around 8lbs and he fitted up to 1 month. If baby clothes are a bit big it's not really a problem. If there too small they won't be comfy. I'd go up to 1 month if having a "normal" sized baby lol.

I also read a tip on here about zip freezer bags and used it... Each one had
1 x Sleep suit, Vest, Hat, Nappy (I took several due to knowing we had a high chance of staying in) They pack lovely and compact. Also took a few little cardigans just in case.

Due to us being predicted to stay in I also bought two packs of Newborn/up to a month sleepsuit and Vests, small pack of nappies etc and they were in a small bag in boot of car.

For going home he wore vest, sleepsuit, cardigan, hat and was tucked in with a blanket into his car seat.

I didn't buy loads of 'clothes' I had a drawer with 0-3 - Vests, Sleep suits, Legging/Top combos and a drawer the same for Newborn. To be honest for at least two months he literally stayed in sleepsuits etc due to easiness and also me not leaving house a lot.

minnieok · 11/08/2020 08:19

Newborn size, bodysuits and sleepsuits. A hat is good if it's cold plus a cardigan otherwise just blankets. Keep the cute stuff for after you get the hang of baby dressing

sunrainwind · 11/08/2020 08:28

I took 3 outfits in newborn/up to 1 month (didn't realise they were different!) and three 0-3 months all in food bags by outfit as a pp suggested (with a nappy and hat).

With my first she wore one outfit and we were home. My second we had to stay in for two days so my husband brought some more outfits in.

sunrainwind · 11/08/2020 08:29

(My second at 8lb 4oz was long so needed 0-3 months straight away. My first was 6lb 11oz and was in newborn/up to a month for a few weeks)

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 11/08/2020 08:43

My baby was 8lb 11oz and fit into newborn size for the first week, so I wouldn't buy many of them but newborn if probably going to be the right size for you unless you're anticipating a big baby.

If you guesstimate a 24 hour stay with baby, it's usually a lot less if all is straightforward then aim for a pack of size 1 nappies, 3 baby grows and a hat.

If you have to stay in longer someone can bring you in more stuff.

Cherryrainbow · 11/08/2020 08:51

I'm going to pack some newborn and some 0-1m, theres not a massive difference but you just dont know how big the baby will be.

Like others I made the mistake of packing 0-3m with my son and he came out at 7lb 5oz, his dad had to go out and buy a load of stuff as I was in the hospital with the baby for a further week.

CrimeCantCrackItself · 11/08/2020 09:36

Get on to YouTube and type in 'hospital bag uk' Grin there's loads of videos with people showing exactly what they have bought for their hospital bag.

I had a 9lb end if November baby, and had a mix of first size and up to one month. But my biggest tip is, get baby bundlers. They're baby nighties (John Lewis, Mark's and Spencer do them) and they have No poppers, you just pull them up, so no faffing about. Short sleeved vest underneath and you're away!

The hospital will be hotter than the sun, take loose, thin pyjamas for you!

welshladywhois40 · 11/08/2020 18:58

I just saw someone put snowsuit - no snowsuits in a car seat - not safe.

orangejuicer · 11/08/2020 19:05

To answer a very specific question - 2 hats!
