I have a routine ultrasound and GD testing to be done on wednesday...aaaand I'm freaking out!

The reason is that my father has type 2 diabetes and that is a risk factor. I eat healthy and do pregnancy weight lifting sessions every other day, but I know that it may not be enough to save me. If I get diagnosed, I don't know what lifestyle changes I have left to do actually, I might have to be given insulin or medication Sad

So what has been your experience with GD? (gestational diabetes)
Do you have a parent diagnosed with diabetes and how did it affect your pregnancy?
How were you able to control your blood sugar?

Thanks in advance! Flowers

My MIL, DF and paternal GF all have type 2 and I'm overweight.
I passed my GD test with flying colours - my 2 hour bloods were only 0.2 above my fasting bloods.

No diabetes in my family and I had GD last pregnancy. I managed it throughout with diet, no medication. It was a massive faff though and I found the frequent hospital appointments very stressful (sorry). But I did get lots of scans of baby so that's a bonus, definitely knew she was A-OK Smile
Good luck with your test x

My mum has T2. I was overweight when I fell pregnant and had glucose in my urine at 2 appointments. Thought I must definitely have GD. Had the GTT - perfectly normal! And I never had glucose in my urine again after that bizarrely. On the flip side, my slim friend who had no risk factors did end up with GD. It does seem to be a bit of a lottery!

I had GD and it was fine.

I have a strong genetic disposition as most of my Dads side of the family have Type 2 despite having healthy lifestyles.

My GD was easily diet controlled, no medication required. I had a straightforward vaginal birth. I did have to stay in for 24hrs for blood sugar monitoring but all was fine with baby and me. She was 6lb 10 at full term so not at all big!

My bloods were normal at the post birth check.

I did follow the diet to the letter though, the food pairing is tricky to start with but I dedicated myself to it for my DDs benefit.

It’s nothing to do with what you’re eating or how much you exercise, it’s to do with your placenta and hormones. I have it during this pregnancy (didn’t with DC1), it’s a bit of a faff but nothing I’m worrying about x

I had none of the risk factors, but was diagnosed with GD at 28 weeks after a GTT. I managed it well with diet, no medication. I had to have check ups every 3 weeks along with growth scans. I did unfortunately end up with pre-eclampsia which you are at higher risk of with GD and I was induced at 36 weeks. Baby was born weighing 6lbs 15, so not big at all although if he had gone full term may have been slightly bigger. Good luck for your test.

I had GD in both my pregnancies. I had to monitor my blood sugars a couple of times a day and they were always fine. I didnt really have to change my diet (assuming you eat fairly healthy). I saw a consult towards the end of the pregnancies and the only note was i would only be allowed to go 1 week over term. This led to an induction with my first pregnancy which was not fun. Both babies were healthy weights 7lb7oz (41weeks) 6lb2oz (40+3).

After my babies were born I hadn't put any extra weight on as more conscience of eating healthy.

Babies have glucose tests after they are born but again no issue if gd is well managed.

Gd sounds scary but it's really doesn't change your pregnancy/deliveey if identified early and monitored. Good luck x

I actually had Impaired Glucose Tolerance before pregnancy and it gave a false positive for GD. I failed the fasting and 1hr by a small margin and was sent into the GD pathway (testing 4x day and diet controlled). With GD you are told it goes away instantly after birth so it was tough dealing with the fact that my numbers didn't improve. I thought I had undiagnosed Type 1 or 2 and had to cope with that on top of a baby. I have no risk factors for diabetes, I'm a size 6 with no family history.

After several more tests it was finally determined that I had IGT which is surprisingly common (up to 30% of adults), but rarely heard about. I read loads of threads about GD on MN and never saw it mentioned once. I'm very glad I found out by chance as I'm much more careful now about what I eat. I now stick to a low-carb diet and feel much healthier as well.
