Push present - any recommendations for where to a special piece of jewellery?

We're due to have our first baby next month and my husband wants to give me a nice piece of jewellery for a push present and is quite keen on a ring, which I think would be lovely, particularly because we never buy jewellery so it would be extra special.

However, because we never buy jewellery, I'm not sure where to look to find something! He's actually found a really nice ring at Tiffany which is both stylish and everyday wearable but I'm not sure how I feel about Tiffany as a brand and it seems that if you buy something from Tiffany, you're essentially buying the brand. I don't have particularly strong feelings about it but I mostly associate it with American TV/movies, conventional girly-girls and being overly-commercialised. To be fair, the ring my husband found is modern and stylish and not noticeably from Tiffany and whilst they do seem to do some slightly tacky love-heart pendant type of jewellery, it looks like those products are aimed at teenagers.

So.. any other recommendations for where to buy something special? We're not originally from the UK so we've got a bit of a knowledge gap as to what's out there. It doesn't have to be a luxury jeweller, I'd be more than happy to support an independent brand but being a special occasion and also an unusual purchase for us, I don't want something generic and mass produced so not keen on high street chains (slightly skeptical that Tiffany might just be an overpriced version of this!).

Thanks!

DH will get me an eternity band we just don't have the money yet.

@timeforawine the sapphire idea is brilliant! I think that's what I'd like too. DS has my eyes and although I do say so myself they're beautiful on him.

Mothermorph · 10/08/2020 08:07

Tiffany is most definitely mass produced high street stuff, but it’s very good quality. But it’s also astoundingly overpriced as you are paying for that little blue box.

You are right that Tiffany is mass produced and very overpriced.
They use decent quality diamonds but the jewellery itself is not particularly great quality.

The term 'push present' makes me 🙄🙄 How very kardasian.

Buns05 · 10/08/2020 16:07

Not a ring but I love Alyssa Smith jewellery. She does some lovely designs. But she does a 'stork' which I think is lovely!

I work in a retail jewellers. My advise is to find a good local independent jeweller to help you. They will be better quality at better value and are much more likely to give better service.

Thanks for the recommendations all. I should have said that I don't plan to travel/use public transport for this purchase, maybe this is overly cautious but I don't want to take any risks with covid just to buy a piece of jewellery, although in normal circumstances that would be a lovely outing. So I'd need to buy from a place that has on online presence. It isn't ideal, I wonder if we should just postpone the purchase until we feel comfortable going into shops.. although that could be 2023 with the way things are going!!

Re. the term 'push present', I agree it's overly 'descriptive' and it did make me cringe when I first heard it but I've grown accustomed to it now and don't really notice anymore. I'm pretty sure it's an Americanism, I don't think we use it back home either (struggling to remember as I've been in London 10 years) but what's the UK equivalent? I don't think there is one, at least I haven't heard of one.

Eternity rings are a nice idea too.. I think it might be be hard to find something in a local shop that we could walk to though. We're in Bow just south of Victoria Park (inner east) and although it's gentrifying, it still seems to be a very deprived area. Unless of course anyone knows of anywhere?

Thanks

My eternity ring is antique... well 1970s Grin bought from eBay, it has a sunburst design with DDs due date birthstone in the middle and actual birthstone around the outside. I wear it everyday since my wedding rings still don't fit Blush
A traditional eternity ring wouldn't look right with my wedding rings so this solution works for me.

Have a look for second hand, there are some great reputable websites where you'll get unique pieces and a lot more for your money.

ohdearthehouseisburningdown · 10/08/2020 16:34

Melanie Casey which is jewellery maker in the US do birthstone stacking rings I’m getting one with mine, my partners and my sons each then if we have another we can add one.

hoxt · 10/08/2020 16:37

Try Branch On The Park in Victoria Park Village. Super local & lovely jewellery. Julia does commissions too. www.branchonthepark.co.uk/

AuntieStella · 10/08/2020 16:39

what's the UK equivalent?

The term 'push present' is just horrible. Not the idea of giving a gift, but describing it like that.

There isn't a UK equivalent (thank goodness). Buying a present for someone who has just given birth doesn't really need a name. It's quite traditional to be given an eternity ring (and then with subsequent DC - if you still have any money by then - you can add matching earrings and a necklace pendant etc)

Tiffany is a good choice if it makes a set with wedding and engagement rings. But you definitely get more ring for your ££ if you buy second hand.

But whether new or antique, there are so many jewellers in London that it's hard to know where to start. Have you any idea what style you would like - traditional eternity, something quirkier? Established brand or up and coming artist?

DannyGlickWindowTapping · 10/08/2020 16:51

If you're only looking online, try Birmingham Jewellery Quarter. It's a real, physical, place, but the area has its own web site, with links to the individual jewellers that have shops. A lot are individual designers, some are second hand emporia, some are more like high street retailers, but there's plenty of choice and different price points.

amd94jgkap3nvpoa3p10dnpaddo0 · 10/08/2020 22:15

@AuntieStella I do like eternity rings and I've seen some nice ones featuring an emerald in the centre of the diamonds which appealed but I'd probably prefer something a bit more unique if I could find the right piece. I'd also like to wear it on my right hand and therefore wouldn't need to match it to my wedding rings.

Re. established brand v. up and coming artist, I'd probably prefer to support someone up and coming, the only caveat being that I felt comfortable with the quality.

I find jewellery shopping so personal it is hard to say where is the one best place to go. It always takes me an age to find the right piece especially when only looking online. I would find any jewellery store that is in walking distance and see what you like and dislike in the flesh and go from there.

AuntieStella · 10/08/2020 23:49

Do you like any of these?

I didn't realise she was in London as well - she's from Jersey

amd94jgkap3nvpoa3p10dnpaddo0 · 11/08/2020 00:15

@AuntieStella super unique stuff! A lot of it is not to my taste, although that Art Deco emerald ring is amazing but unfortunately well out of our budget.

Would you be willing to give an idea of budget, OP, and the kinds of metals that you are thinking of? Etsy is a really good starting point.

Candyfloss99 · 11/08/2020 00:33

Push presents are vulgar and tacky

amd94jgkap3nvpoa3p10dnpaddo0 · 11/08/2020 00:35

@Zhampagne sure, probably around £1-2K and white or yellow gold (not keen on rose gold or platinum).

BirdsDoIt · 11/08/2020 00:39

Depending on the styles you like, and your budget, you could look at Alex Monroe, Laura Lee, Pippa Small or similar small jewellery designer brands? Liberty’s is also a good shout as PPs have suggested.
I got a lovely ring as a present for my second DC and our 5 year anniversary from Lila’s in East Dulwich which sells a beautiful selection of vintage jewellery and might be worth a look if you want something one-off.

ItsMischerWavy · 11/08/2020 05:48

Have a look at Clogau they have some gorgeous jewellery
