Hey! I'm nearly 14 weeks and due 10th Febuary! I'm just wondering when everybody started buying stuff, and what first? I'm thinking more furniture first as I like to be organised (not finding out gender so not going crazy on clothes) ive bought a wardrobe and draws/changer as a friend was selling them.

This is our first baby and I've absolutely no idea where to start! MIL offered to buy a bedside cot for us but do i get one of those and a proper cot for the nursery? Please help 😟

Wait until Black Friday sales. You’ll be much further along then and things will be cheaper

calimommy · 10/08/2020 00:38

I usually wait until 24weeks when baby is viable but you can do whatever you feel like! x

I waited until at least 24 weeks

MahamChoudhury · 10/08/2020 01:02

I am 20 weeks at the moment and haven't started shopping yet. Waiting for the 20 week scan first. However, I have done my research and know what/where to buy most items from. Will probably start shopping in Sept. I am due in Dec.

I waited until I was past 20 weeks, perhaps 23 weeks when I bought our first bits. I had definitely read a lot and researched way before this though.
We have a bedside crib and a cot but they obviously won't be in their cot for many months after birth so I'd recommend a bedside crib for sure.
The first big thing we bought was our car seat and pram. I'm not 29 weeks but still have a lot to buy.

Littlepoppet1 · 10/08/2020 07:00

I think I started buying bits and bobs after my 20 week scan and ordered pram and car seat when I was about 23-24weeks ish as the pram took a while to come. Check out delivery times on prams as they can sometimes be a while.

Definitely recommend a bedside crib, DD was in hers until 5-6 months when she outgrew it. Would def have kept her in it longer if she fit but she was a big baby!

I also waited till much later and it’s a good point about Black Friday and there will be sales in January.

Things like a changing table I wouldn’t even bother buying. I always changed DS on a mat on the floor as it’s safer. His wardrobe is a proper big one so it fits a lot of stuff and can stay for years.

When he was little he slept in a Moses basket which I carried downstairs for the day so it was convenient. However, the next-to-me options are probably better at night if you breastfeed.

Start buying stuff whenever you want to, I started straight away with all of mine! I did have a miscarriage at 20 weeks with twins once but the fact that I already bought some baby things didn’t make it any worse than it already was tbh.

borisjohnsonsstylist · 10/08/2020 07:13

Start buying whenever you feel ready. First time I didn't buy a thing until past 20 weeks and made the most of new year sales. Second time round I saw an excellent deal on the travel system I wanted I bought it there and then. I was 14 weeks.

One thing to be mindful of though is at the moment, coronavirus has caused some massive delays to production and supply (learned this the hard way with DS's lockdown birthday). I know no one can predict if there'll be a second wave or not, or if we'll have an unexpectedly bad winter (I got married in the winter of 2010, it was a nightmare) but please don't let superstition make you delay your purchases and you find yourself scrambling to get what you need.

Pearsapiece · 10/08/2020 07:15

I'm 14 weeks with second baby, due 4th Feb. Our chosen travel system was 20% off this weekend so we chose to go for it. It will stay in our storage room for ages yet but 20% off was a lot of money. The rest I'll be waiting until black Friday but we already have a lot of things. I'll be getting a bedside next to me for our room as ds1 grew out of his Moses basket really quickly. We then have a cot bed for the kids room.
I'm going to find out the sex so will wait until then to buy any clothes, but again, black Friday and sainsbury 25% off weekends will be my time!

NewMumToBe2021 · 10/08/2020 07:39

I’m buying at 5 months. The London baby show is looking like it’s still being held in October. I’ll be just over 4 months then. So I may relax my rule when if I go there.

PotteringAlong · 10/08/2020 07:43

Your baby won’t be in it’s own room until 6 months old - you won’t need a nursery until at least this time next year so, realistically, you don’t need to buy a cot for the nursery any time soon.

isadorapolly · 10/08/2020 18:23

@PotteringAlong but it’s fun! And I used my nurseries to get them dressed and keep all their clothes and toys, we still spent time in there even if they slept in our room. And it’s nicer to have it ready before you’ll actually need it.

PotteringAlong · 11/08/2020 08:45

Grin I’ll take your word for it - I just put a cot in a room and that was job done!

Rainbowafterthestorm · 11/08/2020 09:33

I started buying big ticket items (Pram, car seat, next to me, cot) at 20 weeks. But be aware the Pram was scheduled to come into the store in late October (I’m due November). It was a 18 week wait due to coronavirus. As for the smaller things, I just created a gift registry and bought one or two items a week since I was 12 weeks. The gift registry was mainly for me as I like lists. :)
