gestational diabetes diagnosed at 36 weeks

Hi I've just been told I have gestational diabetes today. Apparently they're going to call tomorrow with an appointment at the diabetes clinic and the dietician.

Has anyone been diagnosed this late? They weren't doing the GTT tests in my trust until recently so I never has this test until friday last week. I'm worried I've had it much longer and it's now completely out of control. I have polyhydramnios (excess amniotic fluid) and a big baby and apparently these things can be caused by diabetes.

Is it even going to be possible for me to pull things back to normal now? Is it too late? How long does it take for change in diet to take effect? I'm so confused about what I should be eating!

Any help/experiences of late diagnosis appreciated. Thank you.

They tested me quite late in my last pregnancy and I was induced at 37+3 due to being on insulin and tablets for it. Also reduced movements didn't help things. Thankfully being checked Thursday for it (at 17weeks). It's never too late to change your diet but as baby is already big with extra fluid they may need to look at inducing you before due date or on. They should have tested you and every woman they saw. Antenatal care isn't that great atm due to the virus

I mean testing women who are more at risk or are showing signs x
