Cyclizine? Anti sickness

Hey so I'm 6 weeks pregnant and have been having really bad nausea.

Doctor prescribed me with Cyclizine and so far I've taken 1. But not panicking because I've read people's reviews and side effects.

Has it worked for anyone?

I've only taken 1 and now starting to worry.

Does it give you hallucinations? And does it cause panic attacks? 😔

I never had any side effects from it. It stopped me being sick but I still felt sick whilst taking it. X

Cobbsgirl92 · 08/08/2020 15:07

It was a lifesaver for me, made me feel human enough to function ! Only side effect I noticed was tiredness but I was already tired anyway so managed to cope!

Annie1211 · 08/08/2020 15:26

Thanks girls. My partner has gave me a telling off for reading all the side effects other have had lolll got myself into a right state.
Yeah I feel very tired but had visions of my hallucinating lol but surely doctor would have warned me if that was the case x

Hi there, I took one dose of Cyclizine years ago and had an allergic reaction very quickly after. Luckily I was in hospital as an in patient at the time as my vision suddenly kept coming and going - I went from seeing clearly to total black outs which would last about 5 seconds each time before my vision returned. This happened for quite some time and was scary. Luckily a nurse sat by my bedside until it subsided.

No side effects for me and it was a total lifeline from around 7 weeks to 21.

Cyclizine messed me up when I had debilitating morning sickness in my first trimester. I used to have spasms in my left arm at night lasting hours and it did nothing for the morning sickness. It also made me super drowsy - felt like I was dreaming (or having a nightmare) that I couldnt wake up from! I was then prescribed Stemetil which wasn't much better. Everyone is different so I hope Cyclizine works for you!

Hi OP!
I suffered from severe hyperemesis from 4-25 weeks so I'm hoping I can provide some good advice, but please ask if you have any more questions.

Medicines during pregnancy are categorised in alphabetical order, with A being the 'most risky', B less so, C even less so etc etc

Cyclizine is around a C or D, which means the risk is very very very minimal but that for obvious reasons it hasn't been tested on pregnant women, but currently no known effects have been proven.

It will be the first choice for doctors to prescribe for the simple reason in that is it dirt cheap.

However, it comes with side affects such as increased sickness (annoying as that's what it is meant to stop) but all of these side affects effect you and not the baby, so please breathe easy in knowing that your baby is fine.

If you find it isn't working, there are multiple alternatives such as phenergen, metoclopramide and ondansetron.

Sometimes you might need a combination of every drug, as I did, in order to provide a proper relief from the sickness.

Some doctors, nurses and GP's will have very limited knowledge on pregnancy sickness, so you may find at times you really have to push for good care.

I had horrendous hyperemesis until I was six months pregnant- lots of hospital visits and put on a drip. I swear, if it wasn't for Cyclizine, I'd have struggled to cope. It got me functioning again and broke the cycle of food-vomit-water-vomit-exhaustion-vomit. Gosh, it was so hard. Take the medication OP.

SJC270 · 09/08/2020 08:02

I had hyperemesis and cyclizine was (and still is at 27.5 weeks) my staple. I ended up having to combine it with another three different drugs but some of those were only safe for me to take post 12weeks. I did have to take it 3 times a day for it to keep the vomiting at bay (this has now dropped to once or twice). Don't be worried if you feel very drowsy for the first week or so, as this passes as your body gets used to it.

Wankpuffin · 09/08/2020 09:42

I’ve suffered HG in all my pregnancies.

The drugs are safe. Please don’t worry.

But please keep going back and trying others if one doesn’t work. I’ve seen so many women in my time struggle through, saying “it takes the edge off, but still nauseous” Etc.

There are drugs out there that will take it all away for you (It was ondansetron for me) or combinations of drugs that willl work. There is no need to struggle and don’t let doctors fob you off.

Bearcub01 · 09/08/2020 10:48

I spent the past few nights in hospital with severe vomiting and this is what they have sent me home with. So far, so good, it’s stopped me from being sick but I still don’t feel ‘normal’. I still have a slight sicky feeling and very tired but I’ll take that over constant vomiting. Hoping I just need to get used to it.

LouJ85 · 13/08/2020 11:26

I've also been prescribed this for constant nausea, I'm only 4 weeks pregnant. I really hope it helps, I can't stand feeling this rotten any longer Sad

Dannibear7 · 23/09/2020 14:48

I still have severe nausea at 13 weeks and even struggling to get out of bed and shower because I feel so dizzy and weak with it. I have been prescribed Cyclizine which doesn’t help at all and just really struggling with it all now and can’t even work it’s that bad. Does anyone have any recommendations please?

coffeecow · 23/09/2020 15:04

I was prescribed cyclizine at 6 weeks pregnant. It stopped me being sick but the nausea was still overwhelming, perhaps even worse because I was no longer getting the few minutes of 'relief' I was getting immediately after being sick. I was changed over to Phenergan between 7/8 weeks and this has helped hugely. I'm absolutely exhausted each day from taking it (one of the side effects is drowsiness) but my nausea is now at a level I can cope with and some days isn't really an issue at all. Im now 9 weeks and just hope this keeps helping me. I wouldn't wish extreme sickness on my worst enemy, it's completely debilitating.

Whatthedoodle · 23/09/2020 15:40

I had really bad nausea and was prescribed it, but it would knock me out so I could only take it before bed. It did help though as my nausea was even worse when laying in bed anyway.
I hope it helps you, nausea can be so debilitating.

Dannibear7 · 23/09/2020 15:58

Hi thanks for the replies and yes nausea is so debilitating and just stops you doing everything, I might see if I can get pheneregan but then don’t want to feel sleepy all day either! You just don’t know what to do for the best really but I’ve had just about as much as I can take from this it’s really getting me down being housebound and not been able to do anything at all. Stay strong ladies and hopefully it all passes soon for us
