My baby is 11 weeks. In the day she feeds for 20 minutes give or take. For the last 3 weeks she will feed anywhere between 1 to 2 hours in the evening. Is she comforting herself or actually feeding? If I take her off she just screams until she is back on Confused help please

Completely normal! She’s likely having a growth spurt and these long feeds, although draining, are entirely normal. If you can, try and relax and enjoy the rest, watch a film, catch up with a friend etc. It’ll probably ease off soon, until the next one. Have you got the Wonder Weeks App? It’s very good.

Does she have a dummy?

YouBringLightInToADarkPlace · 06/08/2020 23:17

It's a nightmare but very very normal (and thankfully does not last long at all, though feels like it will! A few weeks at most if I recall)...
Google "cluster feeding" for more info. Good luck and keep going!

Fatted · 06/08/2020 23:18

It's normal, cluster feeding.

If you aren't sure if it's for comfort, try her with a dummy perhaps?

mosquitofeast · 06/08/2020 23:20

normal.

TheBabyAteMyBrain · 06/08/2020 23:20

She wants the boob, give her the boob. Lean into the skid, prepare snacks, drinks and good TV. It's perfectly normal and better to accept and roll with it.

TheBabyAteMyBrain · 06/08/2020 23:23

With cluster feeding, I remember my dc2 being an utter demon. He would feed from 10pm - 5am if short nap breaks. It almost killed me with dc1 being up at 7am. It does settle down, you have to be patient.

Lazypuppy · 06/08/2020 23:27

She wont be drinkibg for 2 hours straight, they'll be a lit of comfort sucking.

When my dd did this i introduced a dummy because i didn't want to sit there for hours when she wasn't feeding.

I'd put her back on a fee times to see if she fed again, but the dummy worked perfectly to comfort her

circumventgatekeeper · 06/08/2020 23:28

I'd say that baby isn't actually feeding for that whole time, they want the comfort of sucking.

I cluster fed during the evening but if they weren't actually feeding I'd take them off, burp and relatch to see if they were still hungry or just wanting to suck.

It will be a phase so don't get too hung up on it, if you can cope with it then go with it.
If you'd rather not be a human dummy then try a plastic one maybe.

This.

It's cluster feeding. It's mental but doesn't last forever

zeddybrek · 07/08/2020 00:01

Normal.

I remember reading about how this is all a part of how they increase your supply as they grow so time on boob is important and driven by them. If they want boob give them the boob. It's a phase which they do quickly grow out of.

Be careful of using a dummy as it tampered with my supply so DC was growing but as I had offered her a dummy instead of keeping her on, there was a delay in my supply catching up.

MichelleOR84 · 07/08/2020 03:11

That is soooooo normal . My newborn did this every night until about 4 months old . And even after that he occasionally still did . He also use to sleep long stretches at night , sleeping completely through the night by 12 weeks. I wonder if that helped . I use to embrace it (the best I could) and put earphones in watching tv on my iPad in bed.

FourPlasticRings · 07/08/2020 06:12

Cluster feeding. It's important to up your supply so just settle in.

rachelsimpson90 · 07/08/2020 06:39

She won't take a dummy which is why I thought she must be feeding. My mum thinks it's too long to feed and therefore must be using me as one. Thanks everyone for the reassurance

The dreaded witching hour in the evenings!!!
I would put on a good film and try to enjoy it- it will pass 😊

bandbsmummy · 07/08/2020 07:58

Normal. If you think about it, a dummy is an artificial nipple not the other way around Wink

loveskaka · 07/08/2020 13:07

I agree that she wnt be drink for the 2 hours, it must be a comfort thing, give her a dummy, maybe even put some breast milk on it.

TheBabyAteMyBrain · 08/08/2020 22:03

She may not be drinking for the entire time but she will be stimulating her milk order. Breastfeeding isn't just about food, it's comfort and menu planning. If a small baby wants the breast, plan accordingly and settle in.

Gerdticker · 08/08/2020 22:45

Yep my DC cluster fed like this too ; every night from about 8-10 pm typically!

Took me ages to learn that it’s good to just keep switching boobs; every few Minutes if needs be.

As previous people have said, your supply will soon start to increase, although for me it took a good few days, and I was worried for a while that DC wasn’t getting enough. But to cut a long story short, she was :)
