I'm 4 weeks post partum and I have been prescribed Rigevidon which I was taking before pregnancy. When should I start taking it?

Today? Is there any reason you're considering waiting?

No just wasn't sure as it says to start on the first day of your period which isn't happening right now.

Start straight away. Use barrier methods or abstinence for 7 days.
Nurse should have explained this to you!

Start on day 21 after birth to be covered immediately or start on the first day of a period. If taking at any other time you need to take other precautions for the first 7 days

I would start taking it immediately and take other precautions for the first week.

No no this is wrong, don’t start now! I think I’m correct that this is a brand of the combined pill? Eg Progesterone plus oestrogen? Two factors to consider - Risk of blood clot is elevated for 6 weeks after birth a dstarting the pill will increase it further. Also can interfere with milk supply and for that reason usually recommend to wait until at least 12 weeks if breastfeeding. You can start a progesterone only method straight away (pill, injection, implant, mirena). For me I started a combined pill at 12 weeks and it absolutely yanked my milk supply within a couple of days, was awful.
When you do start it, as above just use additional contraception/abstinence for 7 days.

I'm not breastfeeding.

Irrelevant then sorry - would just wait until 6 weeks post to avoid clotting risk, unless you have absolutely no other option. Congrats on new baby btw :)

Currently don't have many options other than condoms which I don't fully trust. Did want the implant or iud but Dr's aren't doing them right now and suggested I just take the pill for now.

It's 6 weeks for combined pill if breastfeeding although mini pill would be preferable as combined can affect milk supply.

TenThousandSpoons0 · 06/08/2020 21:14

Always a balance - if no other options, then a slight increase in clotting risk is probably not a huge concern - getting pregnant again will increase your clotting risk way way more than the pill! It’s a shame it’s hard to get many other options at the moment, assume due to Covid where you are too.

Mamabear2020 · 07/08/2020 07:11

Sorry, I didnt realise this was a combined pill, I assumed it was a mini. Having said that, if you are planning to start having sex again the risk would be lower starting the pill early than falling pregnant again so soon. Give the doctors a call and have a chat with the nurse if you are unsure x
