Putting baby to bed before you

At what age did everybody start putting their babies to bed in Moses basket/next to me and going back downstairs for the evening with a monitor?

One week shy of 7 months . That’s also when I moved him to his own room .

pinkgin85 · 06/08/2020 17:40

My first I think I had him in a routine by 6 months but with my current 7 month old he's been going to bed at a regular time since 3 months at least. I needed a routine a lot more second time around!

DappledThings · 06/08/2020 18:08

@Bettie2192

Well I’m a total dummy because I thought that’s what you were meant to do from the start 😂 so I’m meant to put the baby to sleep in the same room as me? Even if I’m in the living room watching tv?
Yes. Advice up to 6 months is to have them sleeping only with someone else in the room at all times. I followed this mostly and both mine were in our room overnight till about 8 months but moved to putting them down in our room alone fron about 4 months. They both wanted to sleep in the early evening and were disturbed by TV. Had no other risk factors for SIDS as were bf, not around any smokers, full term, no loose covers in cot etc.
LynseyLou1982 · 06/08/2020 18:10

I think he was about 4/5 months. Once he started going to bed early enough to have some sort of evening. Before that I went to bed when he did.

Dontiknowit · 06/08/2020 18:22

When the TV started to disturb their sleep rather than lull them to sleep.

cautiouscovidity · 06/08/2020 18:22

About 8 weeks (this was 10 years ago).

PeacefulInTheDeep · 06/08/2020 19:13

Around 4 months for both of mine, once they could no longer settle or stay asleep with the minimal activity that was going on downstairs. It's not what the guidelines recommend, but it was the only practical thing for us to do.

YouBringLightInToADarkPlace · 06/08/2020 19:35

About 6 months... but it didn't always work!

Bettie2192 · 06/08/2020 20:00

I knew that babies had to sleep in your room until about 6 months rather than their own nursery, but I didn’t know they could ONLY sleep in the room I am physically in as well. When my friends baby was a few months old I’m sure she put him to sleep in another room when she had visitors round, or when she took him to someone else’s house, as she had a baby monitor with a camera.
But for the first couple of months, they manage to sleep even with people talking around them, tv on etc? What do I do, bring the Moses basket downstairs for day time sleeping? Sorry if I sound stupid I just never thought about this before.

Pumpertrumper · 06/08/2020 20:02

DS is 5 months and I’m doing that right now!!!

MichelleOR84 · 06/08/2020 20:37

@Bettie2192 don’t worry , I didn’t know that either . But my DS only napped on me anyway .

PrayingandHoping · 06/08/2020 20:49

@Bettie2192 yes that's it. Either a Moses basket downstairs or I bought an rocker/bouncer that laid flat and she slept in that downstairs (it's the Tinylove 3in1 rocker if that helps)

They should be in the same room as u sleeping all the time (obv popping time bathroom is fine!!)

TenThousandSpoons0 · 06/08/2020 20:58

Pretty much straight away here - usually down at about 7pm and then audio monitor while we carried on o ur evening down the hall. Seriously think it’s overkill to say they have to be in the same room as you aaaall the time- I didn’t even know this was a thing to worry about and I don’t plan to start worrying about it either... to be fair in early days was usually in bed about 9 anyway so it’s not as if they get left for long! I think this is a case of do whatever works for you and don’t stress about it

FizzingWhizzbee123 · 06/08/2020 21:02

About 3/4 months, as he was ready for a 7pm bedtime there. However, because I worried about the SIDS rules, I used to sit up there with him (he was in a crib next to our bed). I would either scroll on my phone, read a book or watch tv with subtitles on. I was going to bed by 9pm then anyway because he would wake a lot, so it was only about two hours. At 6 months, I started to have my evenings downstairs again. Maybe it was a bit OTT, maybe not, but he needed an earlier bedtime and a dark room to sleep and I wasn’t comfortable leaving him unsupervised at that age. I know not everyone would do it. Now pregnant again and not sure how it’ll work, will have to see.

dontmesswiththeGC · 06/08/2020 22:44

@Bettie2192 if it makes you feel better I didn't realise this either. I have a 12 week old, she still sleeps in my room with us overnight but I've been putting her upstairs from 7pm ish since about 6 weeks and for daytime naps as well. She currently sleeps from about 7pm waking up only between 4:30-5:30am, i feed her, put her back down and she sleeps until about 8/8:30 am. I can't see that she'd be sleeping as well as this if she were downstairs with us all evening. I couldn't imagine that at all. I was reading a thread yesterday on which everyone was sharing when the first time was that their babies slept more than 8hrs. Most answers were from 6months-2years, maybe there's a connection?Oh well there hasn't been any issues andI get a good sleep every night. It's funny because I come on here and most people are seem to follow the 6 month in your room guidance but I have my DSIs and all my friends telling me it's time to get my DD into her own room so we can have our space back 🤷🏻‍♀️. Guidance is only guidance i suppose.

PrayingandHoping · 07/08/2020 06:38

@dontmesswiththeGC my baby didn't sleep upstairs alone until gone 6 months but she slept through from 3.5 months.

She would fall asleep around 7.30have a dream feed at 10 pm and then wake until 7am

Guidance is guidance but the sids rate has dropped after it came in so I follow it

PrayingandHoping · 07/08/2020 06:40

When I say slept through.... I meant I was waking HER to feed her at 2am lol (she was v small birth weight so feeds were extra important) at 3.5months I was allowed by the meds that I could drop that bottle

20viona · 07/08/2020 06:47

6 months but I think I'd do it earlier as I now feel more confident after this one.

Charlottejade89 · 07/08/2020 08:32

About 5 months as she had outgrown the moses basket and she was struggling to settle with the noise of the TV. But she was put in her cot which was in our room until she was 6 months

cantknowwhoiam · 07/08/2020 08:34

As soon as possible! But probably at a few weeks old once a routine of feeding was established. Felt strange but it's important that you have some you time and that the baby gets into a routine

Bettie2192 · 07/08/2020 13:47

@dontmesswiththeGC that sounds like a dream! Thanks for your advice, I bought a baby monitor specifically with a camera so that I could see the baby from another room.
