Conception Date - Clueless!

Hey ladies,

I tried calling my GP today after having 3 positive test results over the last 3 days but they were pretty dismissive of me and said to go in when I'm 8 weeks to fill in a form. I said that I was quite confused because I'm 3 weeks late for my period now but I was getting negative test results last week so I don't really know when I conceived. They just kept saying to come in at 8 weeks.

If we go by the likely ovulation date I should be 8 weeks tomorrow but it surely isn't possible to get a negative result at 7 weeks. Or is that quite normal?

Any guidance would be appreciated as I don't have any females in my life I can ask for help and my GP won't talk to me. Hopefully when I get a midwife they will be more supportive even if I am just getting over anxious because I know so little.

hmm I called the GP when I found out (I think I was just over 5 weeks) and they told me to ring the early pregnancy unit at the hospital.

I tried to fill in a self referral form on my local hospital (maternity unit) website as it was advised but the site wasn't working so I made an appointment with my GP and she done the referral for me there and then, maybe call your maternity unit and ask for advice?

To work out your dates, you just need to calculate from the first day of your last period. If you have a 28-day cycle, you'd be about 7 weeks now.

Dates can be very confusing, because the 40 weeks of pregnancy include the two weeks between LMP and ovulation –when you're not actually pregnant. Ovulation dates are so hard to work out, so it's simpler to work with dates based on LMP.

Usually around 8 weeks you'd have a 'booking in' appointment with a midwife where they ask you a bunch of questions and fill in forms to start your maternity notes. It sounds like this might be the form your doctor mentioned. With coronavirus, some midwives are doing phone appointments or the first face-to-face midwife appointment is being combined with/delayed until the first ultrasound scan – around 11–14 weeks – to avoid you having to go in too often.

Thanks all, really appreciate it as these are probably really silly questions, I'll go in next week as I can't find an online referral option in my area. Was a bit surprised that the GP surgery wasn't willing to talk to me about any of it (especially as their online questionnaire says phone them if you're pregnant) but they have historically been a bit rubbish. I think I just need to relax a bit as I'm sure a midwife will be much more patient.
