Kittens and toxoplasmosis

Hi

We got kittens before I got pregnant I'm now 11 weeks pregnant. DH does the cat litter however I've sat near the litter tray before and smelled when they've done poos and am really worried about catching toxoplasmosis. If they're kittens and haven't been outside can they still have it? I'm hoping not as we keep them indoors and bought them from a breeder.

I don't think you hve anything to worry about . Most adults have the immunity to toxoplasmosis anyways so exposure won't do any harm x

So long as you aren't handling poo or soiled litter, you should be fine. If you do need to have contact with it, just wear gloves and wash your hands and forearms thoroughly afterwards.

I’m 31 weeks with 4 indoor cats (including one with stomach issues that causes accidents) and been absolutely fine. Dh deals with all litter trays and anything else like that. It’s a wonderful break 😹

I also have an indoor cat and don’t have immunity to toxoplasmosis (was tested by my OBGYN) and I’m pleased to have the break for litter duties but am otherwise not at all concerned. Cats that don’t go out are so unlikely to have it and you definitely can’t catch it from smells. If you were to get it, it would be much more likely come from food (undercooked meat or unwashed fruit/veg) or soil (if you do any gardening). Leaving the litter box to your DH is sensible but you really don’t have anything to worry about.

You’ll be fine, as long as you’re not handling the poo it won’t cause you any harm.
