All three induced, pre covid, at 42 weeks twice and 41 weeks once. So I have no direct comparison with labour duration. Epidural and/ or gas and air slowed the first two right down again so with the third I decided on no pain relief and it was over quite, maybe partly because of that and/or because it was the third, who knows. Good luck

AutumnHaze · 03/08/2020 18:33

*quite quickly

AutumnHaze · 03/08/2020 18:34

Home within a day or two.

Avearage · 03/08/2020 18:37

I'm really hoping it will be quick 😫 52 with first and 7/8 with other two but reading all the tips and hints that probably won't work for a favourable cervix!! As midwife said if they can break waters they will mostly likely do that....

My first labour was about 24h from first twinge to baby, spontaneous labour at 38+3... Official 1st stage about 1 hour, 2nd stage 2.5 hours

My 2nd was induced at 38+2, 24h from first pessary gel to baby. Official 1st stage about 30 minutes, 2nd stage about 2 hours. Both needed a single pull with the ventouse to get around the corner. Waters went at a similar stage as well!

So my labours were basically the same except induced labour was in hospital while most of baby 1's was in the car as I was sent away not in labour at 9am, baby came at 2pm...

I had an induction just before Covid. Went in at 3pm on the Saturday. First pessary Saturday evening. Second on Sunday morning. In active labour (no contractions prior) at 10am, had her by 2.10pm ( so 4 hours later). Out on the Tuesday but to be honest in today’s climate things like the hearing test etc aren’t being done in the hospital so you might have gotten out within 24 hours. 1st baby. My husband was with me the Saturday at the start to the end of visiting hours and then from 11 on the Sunday but I think it’s only when you are in active labour in some hospitals but right from the start in others now. Similarly after birth most hospitals locally to me are saying the father can stay until you go from the birthing suite back to the ward but others are saying 1 hour tops etc, most are saying no visitors after that.

VDM1420 · 03/08/2020 18:54

I had an induction with my first due to RFM.
This was just before lockdown. I was in labour for 3hours in total.

We went in on Saturday afternoon and baby was here the Sunday morning but due to paperwork and a potential heart murmur I wasn't allowed out untill late Monday night.

Really hoping I can have next baby by induction though as I'm too scared to go into labour on my own

Avearage · 03/08/2020 18:59

@randomsabreuse did you find it more painful with induction? I've read so many say it was.... All of mine have previously been just gas and air....

I had an induction 3 weeks ago. First baby, husband could be with me for the first hour of induction and then brought back when taken to the labour ward and allowed to stay for a short period after baby was born. Was in labour for about 19 hours and ended up with a forceps assisted birth and episiotomy. Went home the next evening.

I was induced with my 2nd baby. I went in at 8.30pm, had some monitoring due to high bp. Had the pessary in at 9.45 but it fell out an hour later, I pushed it back in myself (although it didn’t go in as high as a midwife could get it, obviously). Contractions started at midnight and I was taken to delivery suite at about 3am because my baby’s heartbeat was dropping with each contraction. They didn’t get a chance to put me on a drip or break my waters as I laboured quickly. Baby was born at 7.40am and I was discharged 5.30pm.

I had a lovely experience being induced even though i only needed the pessary. In total I was in ‘active labour’ for 43 minutes. I didn’t have any pain relief, and it was much better than my first who I had an epidural with!

uglyface · 03/08/2020 19:07

Induced at 37 weeks due to waters going but labour not starting. Pessary stage caused mild contractions for 6 hours but no dilation. Put on drip at midnight, along with edpidural and she was born at 6.02am with only a minor graze. I slept on and off once I had the edpidural so wouldn’t consider it ‘active life labour!

uglyface · 03/08/2020 19:10

‘Active’

randomsabreuse · 03/08/2020 19:13

@Avearage I'd say pretty well the same. I didn't need the drip which is what everyone says really hurts. Only had gas and air with both. Not counting the pointless pethidine I got before "real" labour.

Checks hurt worse on the induction, but I think that was because my stitches from baby 1 were tight - I'd felt them making the baby if you see what I mean and a hand is bigger ...

They had a big bath if wanted, only negative was despite previous history they didn't believe me when I said it was definitely kicking in now and were surprised to find I was 7cm when they grudgingly checked. They were horrendously short staffed, had 2 extra urgent inductions booked in by consultants and were in special measures so one of the MW team was tied up showing supervisor types how careful they were being...so a perfect storm. Plus side I wasn't stuck in the bloody car but could bounce on a bal and try to walk off the pain!

FrogOfFrogHall · 03/08/2020 19:15

First baby I wasn't induced, latent labour for 3 days, active labour was about 14hrs. Baby born 40+3.
Second baby induced at 37+0, born 6 hours after pessary, active labour about 40 minutes!

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 03/08/2020 19:17

1st baby, 37.5 weeks.

Pessary inserted, waited 24 hours, pessary removed then a delay due to staffing so at 1pm my waters were broken.

Contractions started immediately and baby born at 6.30pm with a little gas n air.

Stayed overnight and went home at 8am the next morning.

Baby was 8lb 11oz.

Johnson10 · 03/08/2020 19:19

First baby. Currently 5 weeks pp. Partner was with me throughout the whole thing. I was induced 4pm on the Monday. Baby born 1:40pm on the Tuesday, got home Wednesday teatime. I haemorrhaged & there was meconium in my waters so they kept us in a bit longer for monitoring, otherwise I think I would have went home the same day.
The actual labour was quite quick, it just took a while to get it going. First stage was 1hr 5mins, 2nd stage 50mins. I had the gel, then they broke my waters, then I was placed on the drip. I got through it with just gas & air after 3 failed epidurals. It was quite intense but not half as bad as what I imagined it to be.

Ifawl · 03/08/2020 19:19

I had an induction at 39 weeks. It was very fast once it got started but took a while to get going.

Day 1 8:30pm: Had to wait for a bed on the ward.

Day 2 2am: Pessary put in. Monitored for 24hrs. Felt nothing but boredom.

Day 3 2am: No change when checked at 3am. Allowed to sleep.

Day 3 11am: Gel inserted. Not much change by 5pm.

Day 3 5pm: Midwife did a sweep, contractions started by 6pm. Contracted through the night. They became painful around 11pm.

Day 4 3:30am: got transferred out of the induction room to delivery suite. Midwife broke my waters and said I was 3cm. The next 35mins were so intense, much more than I remembered (not sure if that's because of induction or second baby or just how it is) and my daughter was born at 4:11.

So from 3cm to fully dilated and baby born in 35 mins. I was in shock as first labour took 4 days!

And home by 12am. Pre covid.

Do you know how many weeks you'll be when the induce you? It was frustrating as other women were coming and going while I twiddled my thumbs for 2 days making 0 progress. I imagine they were in because of being overdue whereas I was being induced early. Main thing I'd say is be prepared for it to take days. Take loads of snacks and download some crap to listen to/watch.

First baby. Waters broke Tuesday at 10am. Slow contractions started 8pm Wednesday. Induced 11am Thursday - only half a cm. Baby born by emergency C-section at 2.20am on Friday. By which point I'd only reached 5cm.

Was not during Covid, was 9 years ago.

It was incredibly painful on the drip. I had an epidural, but it didn't take on one side of my groin, so all the pain focused there. I had to have a second one. This meant that when I went for my section, I was topped up, so had to have a spinal block.

I found out during a consultation during my second pregnancy when DS1 was 18 months old that he'd been back to back, which could have been a reason for the lack of progression. I told the consultant that they'd never get me on the drip again but she couldn't guarantee that they wouldn't induce me if I went over, so I opted for an elective section. With age and wisdom, I know now they they couldn't have forced me to do anything and partly wish I'd tried for the natural birth.

Unfortunately, everyone I know IRL that was induced ended up with an EMCS.

Friend. First baby. Failed induction (around 15 hours). EMCS. Second baby born naturally with spontaneous labour.

Sister in law. First baby. Failed induction (20 hours). EMCS

Another friend. First baby. Failed induction (16 hours). EMCS. Think baby number 2 was born without intervention though.

Friend 3. Second baby. Failed induction (can't remember how long). EMCS.

I will say that I didn't get on with gas and air though. It made me vomit, so I didn't get the whole pain relief thing with it. If you've been okay with g&a previously, it could well work for you.

And as far as comparing pain goes, when they stopped the drip for a short period, my contractions were much easier to handle.

Chat with your consultant about strategies used in case of no progression. During my labour, the staff swapped shifts and the night staff wanted to see how I progressed through the night, my DH pointed out that I'd been doing this all day, since well before they came in on shift. At 2am we asked how much longer it could take, we told that if could be another 15 hours based on my current rate of progression. I was already 15 hours in at that point. It was then that I told them to go and get me the Caesarian consent forms. I wasn't allowed any food, and had vomited everything up many hours previously. I had nothing left to give.

I was induced at 39+6. Pessary went in somewhere around 3.30/4pm. DD was born at 10.25pm! I was given a new drug (summer 2018) called Mysodelle which was supposed to speed up the induction process. It was certainly speedy in my case! No other labours to compare it to, but currently pregnant with DC 2.
