Restricted blood flow to baby

Hi ladies.

Had my 20 week scan this morning, and was told by the consultant that the blood flow to baby is restricted. He said that this means I'm high risk for a small baby, and preeclampsia. Baby looks fine and healthy for now, I've been put on aspirin, and will have regular growth scans and see midwife fortnightly.

Just wondering if anybody else has had this and what the outcome was? This is my second pregnancy after losing my first baby in a TFMR at 19 weeks last year, so pretty anxious time for me anyway.

Thanks x

Hi @1stbabs. I had the same at my 20 week scan and am also having extra scans and midwife appointments, as well as starting on aspirin. I started a thread a couple of days ago but didn’t get any replies either!

So, sorry I can’t help with outcomes but just wanted to reassure you you’re not alone Smile

I had this news after a blood test flagged some issues and then confirmed at my 20 week scan. Had all the extra growth scans etc.

The only difference it made in terms of my labour was that I couldn't be on the midwife led unit or have a water birth, which was my preference, as DS had to have a clip fitted to his scalp to monitor him throughout.

When he was born they had to cut the umbilical cord immediately as it was really short, so I couldn't hold him otherwise! I also had a really small placenta but it did the job.

He was slightly on the small side, considering I was 42 weeks, at 6lb8. He is now a very tall, chatty 20month old! He still has a little patch on his head where his hair hasn't grown properly yet from the clip but that's it.

@Ayannah I thought I was the only one for a while! Thanks for replying, hope everything ends up fine for the both of us x

@Wingingitsince2018 oh that's so reassuring, so glad everything was ok with your DS. Thanks for replying, I think I'll just try and stay away from Dr Google from now on! x

Request doppler scans in 3rd trimester as these show the blood flow from mother to baby. Growth scans don't show these so they are important. It can be conducted with your usual scans 🙂

My blood flow came back borderline restricted at the 20 week scan. I was already taking aspirin prior to this on the advice of GP due to BMI.

I didn't get any extra midwife appointments, but did get the growth scans. Baby was above the 90th centile! Unfortunately, I did go on to develop pre-eclampsia at 36 weeks. It was picked up at a routine appointment, as I had no other symptoms bar high BP and proteinuria.

As there was no iugr, and the pre-eclampsia never worsened, induction was agreed on at 37 weeks. It went well, even though nothing really happened until the drip. Baby did need the scalp clip, but only because the little minx kept wriggling away from the monitoring! DD was born at 37+1, healthy and happy, weighing in at 7lb 5oz (50th centile).

@Cloverglens thank you, I thought they would automatically check during the scan like they did at the 20 week one, but I'll make sure now!

@Dyra thanks for sharing. So glad your DD was born healthy (and big!) and not affected by IUGR. Nice to know the preeclampsia wasn't too bad either x
