Should I take progesterone? - Any advice welcome!

Hi all,

Apologies if this isn’t the correct section to be posting this on.

I have suffered two miscarriages in a row, one was a missed miscarriage and the other was a natural miscarriage. Both around the 6 week mark. Never got to hear a heartbeat.

I fell pregnant quite quickly after my second miscarriage so I’m not sure how far along I am but I reckon around the 5 week mark.

In a panic, I requested progesterone from a hospital consultant who has to my surprise agreed to give me this. I don’t know if my progesterone levels are low and so far I have not experienced the dreaded spotting/bleeding. I know that progesterone can’t stop a miscarriage and if it’s going to happen, it will happen, but I suppose I’ve read so many stories about it, I just felt like I wanted to be doing something rather than wait it out. Silly I know.

Just looking for some advice or similar stories of people who have taken progesterone after miscarriage/s. As you can imagine I am terrified and don’t want to do anything wrong that may contribute to history repeating itself.

Thanks in advance

I used progesterone in my current pregnancy but that was due to fertility treatment so it exactly the same as you. I had previously miscarried and had I got pregnant naturally, I intended to ask to be put on progesterone due to research I had read saying its effective.

One thing I will say is that research has shown there is no adverse effects on baby from using progesterone (I requested it for longer than it is usually given for this reason) and in talking to my current midwife, she felt that made sense and was a sensible precaution. It can do no harm so surely is worth a go?

Studies suggest it makes no difference - it only makes a difference in pregnancies caused by assisted reproductive technology (art). But you may as well take it as progesterone can do you no harm.

@Pinktruffle @physicskate

Thank you very much for replying. My worry was any potential side effects/harm it could do if not needed but you have both reassured me and helped me make my mind up - I’m going to take it and hope for the best! Smile thanks again

All the best @weebee123, I hope it works for you

I took progesterone for my ivf pregnancy until 16 weeks, I started tapering off at 12 weeks though. Whilst I’ve no idea if it helped or not (I’ve never been pregnant before or after!) it can’t hurt if it’s prescribed I’d have thought!

I wish you all the best 💐

@weebee123 there is actually a recent study that was done and they actually found progesterone to be beneficial to women who have had three miscarriages. See the link here: www.tommys.org/our-organisation/about-us/charity-news/prism-trial-bleeding-early-pregnancy-and-miscarriage

I had three miscarriages and the last one at 11 weeks was a missed miscarriage. The consultant gave me progesterone for 16 weeks to be used from positive preg test. And also vit D tablets. I'm now 27 weeks. And I'm fairly positive it's to do with taking progesterone. It doesn't seem to do a pick of harm and I would always choose to take it. Even tho they are messy and annoying. I wish I'd have been offered or knew about it with my second. Hope this helps

Good luck OP. I’d take it - it won’t do any harm at worst. I had 3 early miscarriages, all at around 6 weeks, never saw a heartbeat with any. I ended up having treatment with prednisolone and progesterone privately and had a healthy baby and pregnant again. Had another miscarriage in between when I wasn’t on the treatment so pretty sure it’s worked. If this one doesn’t work out I’d recommend getting further tests - feel free to PM me if you want more info.

In other countries they do blood tests to see if your own progesterone levels are too low to sustain pregnancy and then prescribe it. You'll need to have it till ~12 w then placenta takes over progesterone production. No harm for the baby reported.

@HarrietM87 @Viletta - thank you so much for your help and advice. It’s honestly so appreciated ❤️ I’m picking up my prescription tomorrow and feel good about starting it! Fingers crossed this one sticks!! X

I would take it if you have the prescription.

I am taking it at the moment (I'm 4+3) and starting taking it at 4dpo. Was told to take it for 2 weeks after ovulation and if pregnant then carry on until 12 weeks.

I'd had one miscarriage and subsequent bloods had showed progesterone deficiency in luteal phase. I understand it can't do any harm but can help a great deal.

Good luck.

@weebee123 all best of luck to you!
