Obese and pregnant

Hi, quite embarrassing really but I'm worried about my weight. I've always been bigger (my breasts also weigh about 1.5-2stone) but I'm the biggest I've ever weighed.

I lost weight in my last pregnancy as I was so ill, so likely it will happen again but is it safe to lose weight when you're pregnant?

My BMI is 38.

I would just try not to gain too much. The idea of actively dieting in pregnancy doesn’t seem sensible but eating well and healthily should minimise any gains above the baby/placenta/etc. My BMI was 35 at booking in and was told to try and limit weight gain to 11-21lb by term. Try not to worry, the majority of women at your BMI will have perfectly healthy babies and you will have extra monitoring by the consultants :) Congratulations!

Hi I'm the same as you, quiete worried about my weight I'm 12 weeks now and lost 6 and a half pound in my first trimester, my main focus is just not to put any weight on if I can, and have the healthiest pregnancy I can be. My first appointment is next week so will ask the midwife about dieting in pregnancy. Also concerned as I heard if your obese they automatically put you in for a c section and I would like the option when time comes to chose they way I give birth. Also worried I may not get a bump but that's just my vanity.

Just eat well and sensibly. I found the biggest challenge was after the birth rather than before.

Enjoy your pregnancy.

Ps my BMI was 41 at booking in.

orangejuicer · 03/08/2020 19:11

I had a c section but it was my choice so you shouldn't automatically be put down for one.

I was / am obese and was in pregnancy, along with being high risk (multiple MCs & other issues) but I am as fit & healthy as I can be - went to the gym (personal training) until the day before I went j to hospital to be induced.

There was never a suggestion of a c-section due to my weight (potentially because of age 40+) and I had a completely normal vaginal birth.

I lost weight in the pregnancy and was almost a stone lighter after giving birth than before I was pregnant. I just ate sensible and exercised as I normally did!

Good luck

I had a BMI of 44 at booking in and it was fine. I only put on 5lb overall and had a fab weight loss of 2 stone when she came out Grin. I had the easiest pregnancy out of anyone I know so it can be done.

I ended up having an emergency c section because DD turned herself mid labour and got stuck, however, it was not forced upon me by the consultants as we just discussed it as part of the birthing process.

kezxo · 03/08/2020 19:40

Ah that's good use are all saying use won't forced to have a c section, maybe it's just been scare mongering I've heard from a few people.

Thanks guys,

My last pregnancy I lost 2 stone as I was so ill and I had no appetite, I only put on 8lb the entire pregnancy and the baby weighed 9lb 9oz I just weigh so much more than I did last time.

Thanks for reassuring me, all

Well I suppose they are just going on stats but it doesn't mean it will happen to you. Best wishes for the rest of your pregnancy.

kezxo · 04/08/2020 08:20

@3rdtimestupid if your Instagram follow plus size birth, although she's American so her stats might not be right for us but I would say wouldn't be too far off, she breaks down all the stats and it's not that scary when you see the percentage of something for example she says plus size mummys will be told they have 5 times chance of getting gestational diabetes but that's actually only 18percent chance if your at the higher end of BMI

3rdtimestupid · 04/08/2020 09:35

Yes completely unplanned, just worked out I fell pregnant the night before my contraception appointment 🤣
