Straight forward birth - how long was you in hospital for?

I'm really stressing that my husband will be kicked out after an hour of me giving birth and not allowed back until the next day! I'm hoping I will be in and out the same day, is this realistic?

Hi there,

I'm sure that after birth someone can stay with you up to four hours.

When are you due? If it's a while away, hopefully things will be better.

TwinkleStars15 · 30/07/2020 11:47

I was discharged 2-3 hours after birth. First birth, no complications.

longtimelurkerfirsttimeposter · 30/07/2020 11:48

After my first, the next day as they wanted to monitor my blood pressure.
The second, had her in the evening and was discharged the following afternoon.

@Bluejayway91 I just contacted my hospital and they said 'Hi, you stay on delivery suite for about 2 hours and you partner can stay during that time. Your partner will be able to visit the next day. Your partner will be able to telephone the next day to make an appointment to visit for an hour during the afternoon.'
I'm due December. It's a while away yet so I thought things would of calmed down by then but now they are talking about a second wave

Had to stay 2 nights. Baby born at midnight so that might have been why. Had to stay 3 nights with my first.

@TwinkleStars15 that's great to hear it is possible then! Thank you

I'm worried too, my hospital also has the one hour policy and the thought of being left alone when my husband has to leave is horrible! 😢

bananamonkey · 30/07/2020 11:50

In theory it is, I gave birth in April and all straight forward so gave birth at 4pm and was home by 11pm (had to wait a while for a free MW to do the paed checks), DH stayed the whole time. My friend had a similar experience last month.

If I’d have had to stay in he would have had to leave after moving to the ward and only allowed visiting hours 2-6. Fingers crossed for you its smooth.

ForeverRedSkinhead · 30/07/2020 11:54

I gave birth to my youngest at the home from home birth centre at the hospital. I arrived at the hospital at 6pm , my son was born at 11pm , I was home the following day at 5pm. My husband was able to stay on the sofa bed in our room.

SqidgeBum · 30/07/2020 11:58

I gave birth at 2:15am, I was out by 3PM the next day. I sent Dh home to sleep (my labour was 2.5 days long. DH was so grumpy) at 4am and he returned at 1pm. I was perfectly happy to be on my own with my baby.

I know they are trying to get women out ASAP at the minute. I imagine if your birth is straightforward you will be discharged very quickly.

carleyemma91 · 30/07/2020 12:13

I gave birth 6 weeks ago, my birth wasn't straight forward (had a tear, episiotomy and a big bleed) but I gave birth at 11.34am and was discharged 7.30pm the next day.

Sanch1 · 30/07/2020 13:49

With my second I gave birth at 11am and was discharged at 4pm, never left delivery suite.

LaGoulueRevenue · 30/07/2020 14:12

You can be discharged straight from the delivery suite if all goes well, so no stay required. You'd have your couple of hours together first of course.
Or you can discharge yourself at any point from the post natal ward.

emmaluggs · 30/07/2020 14:15

Straight forward birth and pregnancy but each year baby had ‘low’ birth weight so in for 24 hr monitoring for each but could have refused

latheritup · 30/07/2020 14:20

Delivered at 5:25pm, no complications with myself or baby, no stitches etc. I was discharged at 11pm. They did give me the option to stay but I just wanted my own bed Smile

lillylemons · 30/07/2020 14:22

with dd I give birth at 11am and was discharged the next day at 10am.
with ds I give birth at 10am and was discharged at 4pm the next day would have been faster if my mental health midwife was on duty.

My niece recently give birth at 2am and was discharged from hospital at 11am she never even made it onto the ward was discharged from the delivery suite.

TheLastDynasty · 30/07/2020 14:25

My friend had her first baby a month or so ago and was allowed home on the same day.

Daisypod · 30/07/2020 14:29

Last baby was born 5 weeks ago. Had to wait 6 hours before I could be discharged as I had had an epidural but other than that it was a straight forward birth so could leave straight from delivery suite.

fedupandlookingforchange · 30/07/2020 14:35

I didn't have someone with me the whole time in post natal with my first and it didn't bother me as I spent most of the time staring at this wonderful baby I'd just had. So long as visitors are allowed if you have to stay in to bring supplies its fine. I'm due next week and visitors are allowed for 2 hours a day. I had an emcs and was in post natal 36 hours. This time I'm hoping to be out in 24 hours.

Dinosforall · 30/07/2020 14:40

Both of mine were born mid-morning, first home late that evening, second late afternoon. Often it's just a case of someone being free to discharge you.

Bobbinsmama · 30/07/2020 14:44

I had a straightforward birth and was admitted to the hospital at 3pm, gave birth around 10pm and was discharged a few hours later from the room I delivered in.
