Should I get a new mattress for Moses basket?

What's the current thinking? I've got the old moses basket that was last used by my niece 5 years ago. Brand new foam mattress bought for it then. She didn't sleep in it very often. Is it still best to buy a new mattress?

we borrowed one from a friend and didn't bother.

i wouldn't worry too much. i just hand washed mine in non-bio and gave it a good airing.

Gill79 · 01/10/2007 13:25

Does anyone know the reasoning behind the advice to replace it?

PregnantGrrrl · 01/10/2007 13:28

over-cautious cot death advice was always my assumption. moses basket mattresses don't usually get alot of wear and tear, as long as it's in good, clean condition i'd re-use it.

deaconblue · 01/10/2007 13:30

I think it's one of the guidelines recommended to reduce cot death. Probably the back to bed campaign info would explain why but I think it's something to do with urine on old mattresses and possible links with cot death (I know nothing about this though so that's just a vague memory from some tv thingie).

I wouldn't use one of 5 years old. All mine had new ones but I see your point as mine are still looking as new .Not having any more kids so have spent £90 on 3 carrycot matresses.

preggersagain · 01/10/2007 13:32

umm 5 years ago they were still produced using arsenic up to you but i wouldn't for the sake of a tenner.

uberalice · 01/10/2007 13:36

It's to do with bacteria that can lie around for a long time, and has been blamed for SIDS. I probably would, given that they're not that expensive. My DS only used his moses basket for a couple of months, but he was sick in it a couple of times, so when I pass it onto someone else, I'll recommend that they get another mattress.

Wizzska · 01/10/2007 13:59

Thanks for all your replies. I think I'll try and get a new one.

good idea to wizzka - am replacing ours which i used for ds now 7.

I didn't use a Moses basket but was lent a cradle and bought a new mattress from babymattressonline on ebay, good price and excellent quality. Being a basket, I would want to hoover and wash it thoroughly if I were you too.

the latest advice doesn't metion second hand mattresses and hasn't done for a couple of years. see, eg www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk/articles/article.aspx?articleId=353&sectionId=9

even when they did tell you to get a new mattress, they used to say hand me downs from siblings were OK.

SenoraPostrophe · 07/10/2007 14:55

uberalice - the bacteria/sids theory really doesn't have any significant evidence to support it. It is not a widely accepted theory.

We have borrowed a moses basket from a friend who's baby is now 2 years, and have bought a new matress direct from the manufacturer for £6.11 (including postage!) Not so much money to spend and then you can be sure it's all okay.

Having said that, who knows how they store the matresses in the warehosues etc....

NKd1167739100921 · 08/10/2007 12:25

I was wondering whether to buy a new one as the guidelines say you should but my mum used the same for 4 children with no problems. For me, the reason for using a previously used one is that everything new contains chemicals etc which are emitted and I felt it would be less toxic to use an old one but undecided now!

missbumpy · 08/10/2007 13:16

It's confusing isn't it? I just had exactly the same problem with pram mattress/liner thing which was a 9 year old hand-me-down from my cousin. It wouldn't have crossed my mind to get a new one as it looked quite clean but DP was adamant that you're not meant to use second hand ones so I bought a new one at the weekend. It was only £12 so it's not a huge amount of money.
