OHSS and pregnant

Hi all - I have just got back from my 7 week scan following IVF treatment. The scan was all fine in terms of heartbeat and measurements, but I was told I have enlarged ovaries and free fluid above my uterus as a result of all the hormone medication. I was also told about risk of ovarian torsion. Does anybody else have experience of OHSS whilst being pregnant? What are your stories?

Hi. Congrats on your pregnancy. You must be overjoyed.

I had OHSS. It was evident just prior to embryo transfer but at a level that was just acceptable.
The next two weeks it increased to a point that I had free fluid on my lungs liver and kidney and was admitted to hospital. My ovaries were the size of grapefruits apparently.
I got a BFP while in hospital. On discharge, I was warned it would take several weeks to get better and to rest and keep up fluid intake. Which I did. It took til about week 12 to reduce sufficiently. It was incredibly painful.
I’d say rest lots. Don’t overdo it. And drink plenty. It will get better.
Congratulations 🥳

Hi! I was in a similar position to the PP. Not terrible, they were happy to do the embryo transfer but they'd collected 32 mature eggs and I looked about 20 weeks pregnant! They told me to drink a LOT of fluids, like 3L a day, including lots of isotonic drinks like lucozade sport. They also gave me some medication for just after the egg collection, I can't for the life of me remember the name though...

Anyway all was fine, I was worried about it ruining things after the embryo transfer but the consultant said if I got pregnant and the OHSS got worse, it wouldn't hurt the baby, would just be horrible for me. And in the end I was fine and so was baby. I'd say by the time I got to my 12 week scan my tummy had gone down. I looked less pregnant then!

Good luck Smile

@Flossie44 @Gabbbbbbby thank you both for your reassurance. I guess this must be a mild case since my symptoms aren’t strong. I am glad you both had successful pregnancies - I can be a bit calmer now x

I had severe OHSS and our transfer was abandoned. I ended up in critical care because of raised abdominal pressure and acute renal failure. I think it is rare for it to be so severe. I was so swollen that my abdomen was 44 inches (6 inches more than I now am at 36 weeks pregnant!)

Take it easy, drink plenty, watch your urine output is adequate and don’t be afraid to seek help if you don’t feel right or develop sudden severe pain.

Congratulations!

@Anaesthetist83 Congratulations on your pregnancy! I guess they just didn’t pick up that I had OHSS before my transfer and went ahead! My bloating has gone down today x
