How much weight do people put on when pregnant

Me again.. sorry to discuss weight! But basically I have been obese for the last few years (I went up to 17 stone 4 at my heaviest in spring this year) I used to be a healthy weight and was a bit obsessed with it until I started anti depressants a few years ago and piled it all on! Anyway... I began to lose a few pounds doing slimming world (down to 16.10) then found out im pregnant! My appetite has gone away and I am now 16.5 ... am I likely to lose more do you think? And how much do you think I could put on during pregnancy if I eat sensibly when my appetite comes back? (If it does)

I know nobody can say for sure.. but what are people's experiences with weight during pregnancy please? Thanks xx

I was treated as if I were obese due to really severe PCOS and a clotting disorder (bmi was 25 and was supported for it not to become 26). Was told that anyone with an obese or morbidly obese bmi would be encouraged to lose weight, and that slimming world have a plan that your mw can prescribe / recommend you for.

I can't say from experience, but a few friends of mine have continued slimming world safely throughout pregnancy and still lost weight all the way through. I'm on my second baby and piling on the weight this time which didn't happen with my first. Probably being on lockdown didn't help, but honestly if you eat healthily as much as you can I'm sure you'll be able to continue losing weight if you wish :)

GrumpyHoonMain · 28/07/2020 21:33

I put on 5 kg during my pregnancy despite watching my calories / exercise - lost it all more or less immediately.

Indoctro · 28/07/2020 21:35

First baby 3 stone because I used it as a excuse to eat everything in sight

2nd time round I was more wize , and ended up putting on 1.5 stone

MrsTiffin · 28/07/2020 21:39

Congrats on the pregnancy @Duemarch2021! I was a similar weight to you for my first pregnancy and stayed the same throughout, mainly due to bad HG and loads of food aversions!

I started slimming world 6 months after DS was born and lost nearly 4 stone I think it was in total. I'm 32 weeks at the moment and put on about 10 pounds in total, still trying to follow SW as much as possible, but not religiously!

Duemarch2021 · 28/07/2020 21:48

Thanks!!! MrsTiffin... did you have a healthy birth? I think I'm just more worried about my/babies health and labour as I've heard being obese can cause all sorts of issues? Xx

7kgs including baby. Went down to 44kg after birth. Was 41kg before. But I needed to because I was underweight. I'm back to 41.5kg now. So, 3kgs.

heroineinahalfshell · 28/07/2020 22:29

I had a BMI of 32 at booking in. My MW has literally never mentioned my weight, other than to refer me for a GD test. I'm now 37+3 and have gained 1.5 stone total. I think that's pretty good but hope I don't gain any more in the last couple of weeks. I've not been watching what I eat but was eating lots of fruit & veg and not much crap until 3rd trimester.

Duemarch2021 · 28/07/2020 22:43

Ooh not long left! Good luck for in a few weeks time! I think my BMI is about 36 and im worried about gestational diabetes and other things like eclampsia .. so scary... i was trying to lose weight before i got pregnant but it happened sooner than we thought it would.. happy about it but very worried about weight.. i do seem to carry my weight well more on my hips and bum than waist and stomach so hopefully that helps somehow x

You can safely do slimming world whilst pregnant if your midwife is happy for it and especially if you were overweight when falling pregnant. I was on it when I became pregnant but managed only a few weeks as I had severe sickness and lived off plain crisps, apples and toast for weeks. I was a healthy BMI when falling pregnant so haven’t been watching my diet and now at almost 38 weeks I have almost put on 3 stone! It sounds so much to me and makes me feel I shouldn’t have bothered with SW pre pregnancy as I just gained it back and more 😂 but my midwife is happy with my weight and says the amount I’ve put on is absolutely fine for my height and frame. It’s all in my bump and boobs with a little on my hips so expecting a lot of it to come off post baby fingers crossed and planning to rejoin SW after my 6 week check if I’m feeling up for it.

I don’t think you should let yourself get too stressed about it 💗

Pregnancy involves gaining weight even for women that start off overweight.
I don’t think it’s right to actually lose weight during pregnancy.

My BMI was 29.7 at conception and 30.5 (93kg) by my booking in appointment. I wish I had been in a better position to start, but hormonal imbalances, TTC and then urgent fertility treatments meant that I was advised not to interfere with my metabolism by trying to lose weight at that time 🤷‍♀️

At booking in they took my weight with no comment. At my consultant appointment (for twins with risk of preterm birth not my weight) my weight was only mentioned as an additional risk factor for two things (GD and blood clotting) and a plan of action determined.

Apart from at booking no one has asked my weight or tried to weigh me. I think if you’re already over the threshold they just deal with the added risk and ignore the actual numbers xx

About 3 stone. Had a lot of water retention. Lost it all within about 3 weeks of giving birth

happymummy12345 · 29/07/2020 01:16

I put on 10kg, or 1 stone 5

Sairafina · 29/07/2020 01:34

I was BMI 22 to start with and have been steadily gaining about 1lb per week since week 15 - I am weighed every 4 weeks which is always a delight!
My ob/gyn said she worked with women who were overweight to begin with and didn't gain any weight for the duration of the pregnancy as they were eating healthier/smaller portions and exercising so the fat loss/baby gain worked out as neutral. All went on to have healthy babies

MrsTiffin · 29/07/2020 06:30

Baby was a healthy weight, had the cord wrapped around his neck so ended up with an emergency section but not related to my weight at all!

I must say though 2nd time round I've found pregnancy a lot easier and I do think it's probably due to being a lot lighter!

Viletta · 29/07/2020 07:11

I'd research medical articles on this. Is it possible to loose weight in pregnancy that would lower your obesity risk? Is losing weight safe for the baby? My logic tells me not gaining weight is probably better than loosing weight.

MamaDane · 29/07/2020 07:16

I gained 34 kg with my twins and lost it all within 11 days after the birth. Most of it was water retention.

Duemarch2021 · 30/07/2020 23:02

Thanks everyone!!!! It's more about how healthy we will be during pregnancy/labour and birth than what i look like.. i can focus on losing the weight for vanity reasons once baby is born.. but im so terrified of something going wrong because of my weight. Its my own fault for not losing weight when i needed to before hand but i wasn't expecting to get pregnant so soon. As my appetite is still awful maybe il lose a bit more and get down into the next stone since its still really early.. then once blood supply increases and baby grows bigger i might not put loads on as long as i dont overeat hmm.. we'll see xxx

I'm also overweight - BMI about 30. No one has been bothered about it. I was told I'd need a gestational diabetes test, then told I wouldn't! (This is a Covid thing I think, they're only doing the GD tests if there's more risk factors, e.g., high blood sugar at booking in, at the moment.)

I was doing pretty well on losing weight before pregnancy. Since getting pregnant, I've not weighed myself. I've concentrated more on eating healthily, so lots of fruit and veg and so on, and on exercising. I think generally exercise is strongly linked to having an easier birth. Swimming can even apparently make baby less likely to be back to back! Obviously you're not meant to start sudden vigorous training, just like you're not meant to go on a crash diet, but walking, swimming, pregnancy Pilates or yoga, or pretty much anything you did before pregnancy, I've been told is fine.

The way I see it is that I don't necessarily want to lose weight in pregnancy, but if I can get into/sustain healthy habits it should make birth easier, and losing weight after pregnancy easier.

RowboatsinDisguise · 31/07/2020 08:32

You can keep doing slimming world. You might put on some weight but if you eat sensibly it hopefully won’t be a massive amount and you’ll quickly lose it. Maintaining or losing a little bit is okay too as long as you aren’t going mad.

In my first pregnancy I only gained about 10-12kg from my start weight, although I lost a lot at the start that I had to put back on. This pregnancy I’ve already gained about 7 or 8kg at 26 weeks. I’ve been so ravenously hungry it’s unreal! Going to try to be a bit more careful from this point onwards, knowing how much I’ve already gained!
