Hi mama’s!

What’s in your essential first aid kit for you and your new baby? Want to make sure I’m not missing anything out 🙈

I'd like to know as well! Following this thread...

It's never occurred to me to have one. If any newborn needed first aid I'd probably seek medical attention.

I did a daisy first aid baby course which was excellent. Available online. It came with the option to buy a first aid kit with all the bits.

Other than that I would say

A decent thermometer is a must. I like a digital scan one.
Always have calpol or equivalent in stock.
A good nappy rash cream, metanium is great.
Nail scissors and clippers.
Sun cream high factor
Saline solution
Aloe gel, handy for dribble rash.
Teething gel.

The toddler things like
Plasters
Antiseptic cream
Tweezers

From reading this on here a few times, from memory, here are some things I recall:

  • doing a 1st aid course will be much more beneficial than just a few things in the cupboard. learning about choking, febrile convulsion and what to do etc.
  • ear thermometer
  • calpol and/or ibuprofen liquids for the correct age
  • A way to actually weigh baby for accurate dosage (kitchen scales a a large bowl or bathroom scales with a bowl)
  • normal sized nail clippers. Not the tiny baby ones. Not really 1st aid though, but have read others say the tiny ones are useless.

I bought a standard first aid box from amazon- then spent money on a decent thermometer (a Brain forehead reading one). Touch wood never had to use the contents of the first aid box, but did use: palmers teething sachets, metanium nappy rash cream, a blocked nose sucker thing, baby vapour rub, (the snuffle baby products), and calpol. Anything else you need there’s no point stocking up on imo until you need, medicines go off quicker than you think, you can always run out to chemist if needed.

A Braun not brain Hmm

A decent thermometer, calpol (check the age), nasal aspirator, nappy cream and infacol is useful to have for if baby gets colic

I second doing a first aid course. Invaluable! And can buy a complete mini first aid kit at the end of the course, too.

Armpit thermometers were recommended by the first aider on the course I took as more accurate for babies instead of forehead scanners/ear poke thermometer things/under tongue ones. Nursery worker friends also said this too.

Saline nose spray - brilliant stuff

Footlooseandfancy · 28/07/2020 08:59

First aid course is a good idea - I did one just before we started weaning as I wanted to know what to do in case of choking.
To start:
Good thermometer
Calpol
Nappy cream - bepantham worked fine for us but has been barely used
Saline nose drops

Bit older:
Teething powder
Anesbol liquid
Ibroprufen
Piriton (or the child friendly name!)
Plasters
Shuffle babe rub or Vicks rub when old enough

For mum:
Good stock of paracetamol/ibroprufen for post birth pain
laxatives/softener for post birth poo

The thermometer thing is a bit of a debate. I think the arm ones are most accurate. However I LOVE my forehead scan one. When she was really unwell I could take a quick reading and if the scan one was high enough to concern me I could then strip her and get an underarm one.

Think it will be a personal choice but for me I prefer the scan.

Snuffle babe saline drops to clear boogers.

Calpol plug in for colds

Metanium nappy rash cream

Forehead thermometers are reknowned for reading low. Underarm ones are recommended for babies (although I've never successfully got a baby to stay still long enough for our cheap Tesco one to take a reading. I like the ear ones but they're no good until their ears are big enough to fit them in properly.
