Low amniotic fluid - anyone experienced this?

I’m 34+4 and just had a growth scan. Everything has been normal so far, second pregnancy. Baby’s measurements are all good, but I have low amniotic fluid from today’s scan. I’m just waiting to be seen by the consultant but wondered if anyone had experience of this and what was suggested?

Saw the consultant who wasn’t as concerned as the sonographer seemed to be, so that’s good. Anything lower that 5 is classed as Ogliohydramnios (low fluid) and mine is 6.4 so at the very lowest end of normal. But I scared myself silly by googling it Confused

Don’t have any advice to give as most posts I’ve seen are regarding too much fluid! But glad your consultant isn’t worried! Will they be monitoring you closely now? Good luck

@Zara1234uk doesn’t look like many people have experienced this does it Confused Nope, he said he wasn’t overly concerned as I was still in the normal range, albeit at the very bottom... But it’s been playing on my mind all day.

I had it in one of my scans I think it was 37w I got a follow up scan a few days later and it was within normal range again. I was in a lot for reduced movement anyway and they brought my section forward to 38+2 after that.
When he was 6 weeks he had a hip scan which was apparently a follow up to low amneotic fluid incase it had impacted his growth but he was fine/normal. He's 10w old now!

I'd had a really stressful pregnancy, including surgery at 15wks for an ovarian cyst. Then I was diagnosed with Ogliohydramnios at 30wks, I had to have weekly scans and was told if it dropped any lower they'd keep me in and induce, I also had to monitor her movement. It didn't drop, but I was induced at 38wks as a precaution. I also scared myself silly Googling beforehand and no one else I knew had had this.
This was 15yrs ago and my DD was born healthy with no problems relating to the low fluid. After she was born I found quite a few people at mother and toddler groups who had had similar issues and their kids were fine.

boobot1 · 28/07/2020 06:37

I has this, they decided to induce at 36 weeks. When it came to bursting the waters there was loads, scans can wrong

Goodebe · 28/07/2020 06:41

Same - induced but she was absolutely fine

Thank you everyone. I’m not one for wanting lots of intervention/scans etc but I am surprised they didn’t request a repeat scan just to be sure... I could always book a private one if I’m worried.

Anyway, the only other thing I notice is that movements are a lot more pronounced/a bit more uncomfortable - did any of you experience this due to not having much fluid around baby?

No, she moved less if anything, I was supposed to count her kicks, but had to have a bath to wake her up and got sent out of one scan to drink Coke and jump about Hmm. But I'm very tall, so had plenty of room and didn't feel uncomfortable. At least it's reassuring that your baby is moving so much, mine was so laid back that I was worried - she made up for it after being born though and has been a shocking sleeper for 15yrs. 🤦‍♀️

I planned a home birth so had a presentation scan at 38 weeks. It picked up very low fluid levels and I was induced the next day. I was treated as a high risk pregnancy - constant monitoring and a midwife with me the whole time. All fine. Very healthy baby (apgar score of 9 at birth). I hope all goes well with you too.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 28/07/2020 20:57

I measured small for dates at about 35 weeks and was sent for a scan. I can't remember the number, but when looking at the chart on the wall of the consultant, I saw I was right off the bottom of the chart.

As a result of the oligohydramniosis I was given fequent monitoring, every other day I think. And I was going to be induced at 38 weeks.
At 37 weeks I went into natural labour and DD was born healthy. She didn't need any special help and is now 19.

TwinkleStars15 · 28/07/2020 22:45

Do any of you remember what your measurements were? Apparently I don’t have Ogliohydramnios because that’s only diagnosed under 5cm and I have 6.5cms, which was plotted at just under the 5th centile on my chart. I guess I should just trust the consultant and put it out of my head, but it’s hard! I’m having a planned home birth.

IIRC I had this. Weekly growth scans for last few weeks of pregnancy. Final scan looked fine, so permission for home birth was reinstated. Baby was born at home and a squashed up foot sorted itself out without any treatment.
Good luck.

watertheroses · 29/07/2020 07:26

The hospital staff take four measurements. Three areas were between 1.5 and 2 and they couldn't find any fluid in the other quarter.

CallarMorvern · 29/07/2020 07:33

I don't know what my measurements were, I'm not sure if I was even told. I don't have my maternity notes, in fact I didn't even know until recently that you could ask to keep them
