Cotton wool!

I know this is a baby basic and how hard could it be...

But do you seasoned mummy's use cotton balls or pads or something else...

Looking at the boots range and confused about what to use for newborn

I've gone for pleats, that way I can pull off as little or as much as I need. Balls might be too small once wet and I find pads have a bit of a scratchy edge but that's just my preference!

dementedpixie · 26/07/2020 21:20

Pads leave less fibres - big ones are more useful. Although if its for nappy changes I just used wipes

Onekidnoclue · 26/07/2020 21:21

I’m so confused! What do you need cotton wool for? Is it for poo wipes? If so I’d ditch that idea and use water wipes. Good luck op.

THNG5 · 26/07/2020 21:25

3 babies so far and never used cotton wool. Can't stand the stuff! If you're thinking for nappy changes, water wipes are the way to go!

New2020 · 26/07/2020 21:31

Thanks guys! I was thinking I'd need it for nappy changes. I thought water wipes would be a whole lot easier but got told only to use cotton wool and water for a newborn..so left very confused!

@MrsN2121 I was thinking the cotton balls would be too small and pads too scratchy too!! But then pleats might be a hassle to pull off when you are trying to change quickly

Oh and I'm thinking I'd need these for top and tailing too in the early weeks

With my first i used cotton wool and swiftly switched to wipes. With my 2nd i took wipes to the hospital with me! Cotton pads were easier for me when used for cleaning eyes

Floatingstar · 26/07/2020 22:27

Used cotton pads for the first few weeks and it was too a bit annoying so just switched to water wipes

UsernameNotValid · 26/07/2020 22:33

We used cotton wool pads for the first few changes with #2, swiftly changed to reusable wipes and water.

Much easier!

FeedMyFaceWithBattenberg · 26/07/2020 22:39

i would use a wet flannel x

Shayisgreat · 26/07/2020 22:41

We used cotton pads for the first week or so and then bought reusable material wipes. So much better at cleaning all the poo off properly. It is a regular extra load of washing though!

Thanks got your responses.

Are water wipes ok to use on newborn skin?

I had thought it was a no go and only cotton wool and water was good to use in the first couple of months

I’ve had friends who’s babies have reacted to water wipes so I’ll be taking cotton wool to the hospital and then reusable cheeky wipes once home. I’ve just found cotton wool on amazon in the baby section, think it’s pleats.

dementedpixie · 26/07/2020 23:45

Wipes have been fine for both my kids as babies. Water wipes didn't exist when mine were small so I just used sensitive non fragranced ones. No way would I have used cotton wool for the first couple of months - its just not convenient especially if you are out and about

ChanklyBore · 26/07/2020 23:46

Wet flannel, for any age, newborn, baby. Toddler. Just have different colours. In our house it is blue for poo .....

Onekidnoclue · 27/07/2020 09:20

I used water wipes since day one and never had a problem. I’d use a flannel for top and tailing. Cotton wool and water sounds like a total pain in the arse!

Footlooseandfancy · 27/07/2020 10:19

I've got a nearly 3yo and I have never used cotton wool once. The HCA is the hospital asked us where our wipes were when she helped me with the first few nappies! Flannel for washing.

Frazzled2207 · 27/07/2020 10:21

I think I lasted about one happy change with cotton wool.
Water wipes initially. And then Aldi wipes which were the best value around, not quite as “pure” perhaps but perfectly ok.

Out of interest...has anyone tried Aqua Wipes? Had WaterWipes on my list then seen these 🤔 read Some reviews that they had been recommended to some people by their NHS midwives as being suitable for newborns and they look to be more eco friendly too? 🤔 biodegradable I believe.

Never sure which of these reviews are real and which have been paid for by the brands so I’m always sceptical 😂

Thanks for the tip. They looks brilliant. I’m soooo lazy though that a large part of the appeal of water wipes is that my nice Amazon man leaves them on the doorstep. Terrible I know as evil Amazon and worse for the environment but the laziness is strong...

Ritchie30 · 27/07/2020 12:36

@Onekidnoclue Ohhh I’m with you there 😂🙌🏻 Don’t worry about that!! Anything for an easy life!! This will be my first baby and I’m finding it so hard not to be sucked in by all the marketing on things and all these supposed “wonder products” that you see all over Instagram etc lol. I haven’t ordered the aqua wipes yet! Hopefully someone on here has used them and can give a proper review of how they are 😊 it’s so good having this forum for actual advice from real mums 🙌🏻
