Stupid winter baby question!

Please excuse the stupid question here. DD was a summer baby and for some reason I'm having a recurrent nightmare about this baby getting taken away from me as I try to leave hospital because I don't know the answer to this!

When leaving hospital with a winter baby, what on Earth do you dress them in? I know coats in car seats are frowned upon so would you just dress them in a sleep suit and cover with a blanket? In my dream I do this and the midwives flip out that I'm a terrible mum and take the baby off me so it's clearly getting to my subconscious!

Vest, sleep suit, cardi (not too bulky), hat. Blanket tucked in. Wait inside with baby until person driving has brought car round

OverTheRainbow88 · 24/07/2020 18:17

I had two winter babies and both times put them in snow suits to be told off by a
MW!! I think a baby grow, jumper and blanket is good idea 😊

OverTheRainbow88 · 24/07/2020 18:17

Ah yes and a hat

Spice04 · 24/07/2020 18:17

Hi. Mine was a Feb baby last year. Please be reassured no one is taking your baby from you. Depending on the Temp, consider a short sleeve vest under a babygrow/sleepsuit. Maybe a lightweight cardigan. You can then put a cellular blanket over baby in the carseat and turn the heating up to a warm (but not too hot) temp. Depending on the walk to the car, you might want to pop a hat on, we did while we paid parking etc and them took it off when in the car.

I'm having a winter baby this time round and had a summer baby last time.

I'm planning on putting him in a long sleeved vest, socks, mittens, hat and a woollen knitted onesie. Then a blanket over him in the car seat.

I put my baby in baby grow and vest with a blanket or two and a hat which I took off once the car had warmed up

FizzingWhizzbee123 · 24/07/2020 18:19

You want clothes that can’t compress when dressing for a car seat. I agree with the above - vest, sleep suit, knitted cardigan and a hat, with a blanket tucked in after baby is strapped in.

omg35 · 24/07/2020 18:19

Thanks so much everyone! Good to know my instincts aren't completely ridiculous 😂

It is just in the dream the baby gets taken away- I know in reality it wouldn't happen- but the matter of what to wear does seem to be invading my subsconscious somewhat! I'm blaming hormones. Thanks to everyone who has replied 😊

We're in Scotland so he'll be in a lot of knitted woollens Grin

EchoLimaYankee · 24/07/2020 18:22

They get really warm in car seats. I think my December babies had short sleeved vests, babygro, cardi, hat and a few layers of blankets. I sat in the backseat watching them like a hawk too Grin

FizzingWhizzbee123 · 24/07/2020 18:23

Pregnancy dreams are the worst 🤣 so weird and vivid!

Sootikinstew · 24/07/2020 18:25

Lots of layers.

Long sleeved vest, socks, babygro, cardigan, hat, blanket tucked in.

OnNaturesCourse · 24/07/2020 18:55

I've got a winter baby - and a isofix carseat so there no tucking the baby in before leaving!

I left with her in my arms. She had a vest, baby grow, mitts, booties, hat and cardigan/jacket on (not a puffy one) and was wrapped in a fleece blanket.

My DP drove the car round with heating on and I got in with her, took off her blanket to strap her in and lightly put the blanket over her legs. Also removed her hat on advice from MW.

Done it all in reverse when we got home.

ScubaSteven · 24/07/2020 19:03

DS was a winter baby, I dressed him in a vest, baby grow and cardigan. He also had booties, mits and a hat. I got a footmuff for the car seat and so once he was dressed and strapped in I just zipped it up. Once in the car I unzipped it and took his hat off. DH has warmed the car up and so he didn't need a blanket once we were in the car but we had one just incase.

I've also seen star blanket/wraps you can get for the car seat which might be a good alternative to the footmuff.

Jacky209990 · 24/07/2020 19:45

I loved my car seat footmuff. Lovely and warm and had buttons and velcro to open up and not disturb the straps of the car seat.

Tuppence and Crumble Star Wraps!!!

Metallicalover · 24/07/2020 19:53

I was just going to say look on tuppence and crumble star blankets! They are fab! Safe for car seats.
I would do vest, baby grow, hat and star blanket.

MsJuniper · 24/07/2020 19:55

We had a Morrck blanket for DS which was great.

PaganOfTheGoodTimes · 24/07/2020 22:19

I was coming on to say tuppence and crumble star wrap but someone's beaten me to it! It was brilliant for my January baby - kept him lovely and snug.

omg35 · 24/07/2020 22:22

Thanks so much to everyone who recommended tuppence and crumble. They look amazing!

My Feburary baby left hospital in a babygrow, cardigan, hat and a Morrck blanket. It's really worth getting a Morrck blanket for a winter baby.

BeMorePacific · 25/07/2020 09:06

My winter baby left in a big cuddly bear suit thing... which I took off before he was put in the car.. a total waste of time.. long sleeves and blankets will be fine xx
