Clothes - How many of each?

I've been starting to collect some bits, but i have no idea about how many of each size I need? Due in November.
In newborn size Ive got a pack of 7 vests (7 short sleeve, 7 longsleeve), 5 leggings, 5 babygrows, and also got a few hats and socks. Will that be enough? I have no idea how many I'll need, or how long they'll fit for? Seem to be around 50th centre from 20 week scan.
And then how many 0-3? Im assuming they'll last a bit longer?
Can anyone offer some advice?

I just went for 0-3 months as everyone has big babies in our families and mainly vests and babygrows. Outfits are cute but babygrows are easier. I think I’ve got about 15 babygrows as ds was very pukey and got through about 5 a day. I didn’t use any leggings or newborn socks. I used blankets on the pram at first as it’s easier. I think the first pram suit was 6-9 months. It’s much. easier to get a baby in a size bigger of pram suit. Those star wraps are supposed to be good

Teacaketotty · 23/07/2020 23:15

DD went through tiny baby, newborn and 0-3 in the first 3-4 months but she was in a vest and sleep suit 90% of the time. My biggest tip is don’t bother much with outfits, socks etc as they are more hassle than they are worth.

I think we usually have 10ish sleepsuits in each size, same with vests. 0-3 is actually quite big and didn’t look at DD till nearly 3 months - we had to run out and buy tiny baby before leaving the hospital!

I got a lovely all in one fleece suit for outside from the white company which was really nice and will buy one again. Size up for that kind of thing though, all things are better too big than small.

@Teacaketotty @gonewiththerain thankyou! OK so I won't worry about the socks too much, so do you think I should get some more newborn baby grows or wait to see how big baby is? My worry is I'll buy loads and then they won't fit. Although I doubt I'll have a big baby, im only 5ft3 and quite petite, size 8 before pregnancy (I was only 6lb3 when I was born).
Thank you again for your help!

How big are the babies in your families? If you/your partner/siblings were all over 7.5lbs I wouldn’t bother with tiny baby. If there have been many small babies then get some small baby clothes. Only one woman has produced a less than 7lb baby in 3 generations in our families so I assumed a larger baby upto 8lb. Turned out he was 8 12! The one I’m carrying now will come out at 39 weeks so I’m assuming 8lb ish. You can get newborn and upto 1 month in size

Mummyspider27 · 24/07/2020 08:19

I don’t think you can tell, I was 9lb 4oz at birth, size 8-10 and 5ft 7. My babies have been 6lb 9oz and 6lb 2oz. I was the biggest baby in the family but have had the smallest. I would start with newborn. Agree you need 15 ish also have a sicky baby who can go through a lot in a day. Also did no clothes or socks etc for months, I just love a baby grow!! Xx

Rainbowafterthestorm · 24/07/2020 08:39

I’m due in November too. I’ve gone for literally 10 of each size of vests (different sleeve lengths) and sleepsuits. I was a projectile vomiter when I was a baby, so I’m expecting the worst (and hoping for the best, lol). I haven’t bothered with tiny baby. But I’ve gone for newborn (Up to 7.9lbs), up to 1 month (Up to 10.5lbs ish) and 0-3months (Up to 13 lbs). My advice is to really read the labels, some call a size tiny baby and it’s the same weight as newborn elsewhere. I’ve sale shopped hence getting it early but I’ve stopped now as I know the baby will get gifts. I’ve not got a Pram suit yet as I’m waiting for the winter stock to come in. I’m hoping those lovely fluffy ones appear soon.

Teacaketotty · 24/07/2020 08:46

I would go for a mixture of newborn and 0-3, we used tiny baby but DD was just 6 pounds exactly as she was a little early. You can always buy a few at the time if you need them like we did, I think it’s likely you will need newborn and 0-3.

It’s very hard to tell, DH was nearly 10 pounds and I was 8.5 pounds as a baby!

I had a mixture of vests but found we used mainly shortsleeved ones even through the winter as I was worried she would be too warm in the house with the heating on. I’m sure whatever you get will be great, if all else fails next day delivery from Next and your sorted!

ItWasNotOK · 24/07/2020 08:49

If you have a drier, the number you need is vastly reduced. We use about 5 in rotation.

Agree with outfits being more hassle than they're worth.

Avoid anything with buttons, whoever puts buttons on baby clothes needs taking out and shooting.

Footlooseandfancy · 24/07/2020 08:53

I'd say 15ish of baby gros and short sleeve vests - we only used long sleeve ones on very cold days. Gives you enough to wash every other day plus have some spare - we had a lot of leaky nappies to start.

We had a few 0-1 months but mostly 0-3 months but I had a big long baby (as does every one in both families). You'll probably find you get 0-3 and 3-6 months items as gifts too.

biscuit13 · 24/07/2020 11:23

@gonewiththerain I was 6lb 3 but was 4 weeks early. My sister 7lb and 2 weeks early. DH was 7lb 10 and 2 weeks overdue.
Its so hard to tell!

@Rainbowafterthestorm ah brilliant! Yeah, DH seems to think we "have loads" but i think he's underestimating it massively 😂 we havent got much 0-3 yet, as we will probably ask if people want to get gifts to get that size. My sister did find a cute pram suit that 0-3, a little fluffy one with a hood.

@Teacaketotty yeah husband is saying we'll just buy more if we need them when bahy is here, but I am a very organised person and like to be prepared. So I'm finding it difficult not to buy more! Haha plus who doesn't love buying cute little baby clothes.

I've gone for a mixture of newborn, upto 1 month & 0-3 months, I've also picked up 1 tiny baby babygrow just incase. My son was 2 weeks overdue & weighed 7lb 2, so I'm expecting this baby to be similar!

okiedokieme · 24/07/2020 11:58

I would stick to packs of 7, or 2 packs 3 in each size. Don't bother with long sleeve vests or fancy outfits (far easier just to have them in sleepsuits most of the time. A couple of cardigans in 0-3 (no need for newborn) is helpful if it's winter. Mostly you use blankets for warmth at that age.

okiedokieme · 24/07/2020 11:59

Ps if you have a large supermarket nearby you can send someone out for tiny baby size if needed, my mum dashed to the 24 hour asda!

Trufflepuffpuff · 25/07/2020 10:23

My baby is due in November too, so this is really helpful. I've been wondering do I need to buy a newborn or 0-3 months pram suit? I've been given two 3-6 month ones but am I going to need a smaller one too? Will I need one for bringing home from hospital? Thanks!

EBM20 · 25/07/2020 11:21

Im also due November and I've stopped buying chlothes now so I actually have room for any gifted clothing! I've brought a few baby grows/outfits/vest packs in newborn, up to 1 month and 0-3 then brought a few bundles of baby chlothes on facebay I liked the look of for cheep. I do think I've got an excessive amount now... in newborn/0-1 month (I've mixed them together at the moment on the rail/in draw as I don't see much difference in sizing but will probably separate once I've washed) I've got about 15 vests and 15 baby grows, about 5 outfit sets and about 5 mix and match trousers and tops each, I've got 1 all in one coat in 0-1 month. Then in 0-3 is where I've ended up looking like I'm having twins (opps) I've got a draw stuffed with vests, the last time I counted was 34 but I've been gifted a few since then and imagine I will be gifted a few more, about 30 baby grows, 6 trousers/leggings and 10 tops to mix and match. My nan gifted me 3 all in one coats and I already had 1 so I've now got 4 in 0-3 and I've got 4 jackets/jumpers. I see it as the more I have the less often I have to think about washing incase I run out of chlothes for him! Also I will make sure he wears the outfits I have brought brand new or have been gifted before putting him into the seccond hand stuff I got from bundles. The seccond hand bundles I never paid more than £10 for a bag and I even got a recycling bag full for free from facebay, mostly was 3-6 so I've stored it in a storage box. Once I start letting grandparents have him for a few hours to give me a break I'll probably give them a few baby grows and vests to keep at there house.
I have brought his 'hospital outfits' in up to 1 month but will pack newborn just incase. I havent brought any tiny baby but may buy 1 pack of vests and 1 pack of baby grows just incase nearer to the time depending on my measurements

@EBM20 wow! Youve managed to get so much! That wardrobe looks so adorable!

@Trufflepuffpuff I've just gone for a 0-3 pramsuit. Doesn't matter if its a little too big.

This has been really helpful! Dexided what bits I can get a few more of and what bits I can wait and see. :)
