Advice for formula fed night feeds?

Just wanted peoples experiences really... I have a next to me crib and a perfect prep downstairs... is it basically going to be the case that baby cries when he wakes up until I’m back upstairs with the made up bottle? I know it only takes a few minutes to make. What are people’s experiences with formula feeding at night? TIA

Take him with you. X

Can your partner go while you cuddle baby or vice versa?

TeddyTeddy · 23/07/2020 20:16

My baby doesn’t seem to cry in the night (yet) but I think my older son did. I would pick up the baby while my partner made the milk, or vice versa. If I was alone then I would let him whinge while I made a milk. You could always unplug the perfect prep and bring it upstairs.

I had pre-made bottles of formula that you just poured into the sterlie bottle and go. You could warm it up. With a newborn they don't have a clue about night and day so I'd just take him down with me and put him in his baby cushion play mat and he cried it out whilst I prepped the bottle.

Someone was asking advice about formula night feading prep in parenting.

TeddyTeddy · 23/07/2020 20:16

If it was a proper distressed cry then I would take The baby with me.

Sterilised bottle in room, pre made up formula in carton. I found for the sake of 75p a night, not getting out of bed, messing about in the kitchen etc, screaming baby as you wait for it to be ready, it was worth it. Just sit up, pour and feed

In our case, this was on a table next to our bed:

  • Bottle of water
  • Empty baby bottle
  • Small Tupperware container with formula powder and scoop
  • Burp cloth When our DC woke up at night, we had all our supplies staged and ready to make formula on demand. This was actually much faster than trying to warm up pre-made formula and we didn’t have to worry about storing formula milk for night feeds. If you pre-make the formula it will need to be in a cooler because it can only be out of the fridge for 1 hour. So, plan ahead and have your supplies ready. Then, when your baby wakes up during the night, make the formula on demand. Prepare the bottles at your own pace to make sure it is done correctly. It’s easy to feel rushed with a crying baby, but if you spill milk, the whole process will be much longer.

Ready made bottle and sterile bottle on bedside table. Pour in and feed without leaving the bed

We just took him with us down stairs, perfect prep could be done quickly with minimal lighting, then I'd sit downstairs with just the TV on

TrashKitten10 · 23/07/2020 20:20

We brought the perfect prep upstairs and had the scoops of formula measured into a dispenser pot so it took seconds to make a bottle up.

LivingMyBestLife2020 · 23/07/2020 20:21

I had the prep machine upstairs all the time. It was easier that way

Ginger1982 · 23/07/2020 20:23

We kept the perfect prep in our son's room to took him out of next to me in our room and through to his room to feed. Also meant the other one of us (usually DH) wasn't too disturbed.

Littlepoppet1 · 23/07/2020 20:23

Whichever of us was doing the feed would take DD downstairs with us and sit on sofa and feed with low lighting so we didn’t disturb the other. If you don’t want to do that I’d also agree with others who said use the ready made bottles for night feeds.

Completely spoilt - I have 2 prep machines. One upstairs and one downstairs. Doesn’t exactly save loads of time as walking up and down the stairs isn’t exactly a lengthy process but it helped me only half wake up!

If baby is distressed then hold him / have one of you hold him whilst the other makes the milk - if this isn’t possible then just try and make soothing noises whilst you prep the milk.
As my good friend likes to say, nobody ever died from crying. Yes it’s horrid to hear but he won’t be traumatised from 90seconds of crying whilst you make him a bottle that he will then snuggle into you to drink with cuddles.
