Anyone had repeated oral thrush/Nystatin during pregnancy?

Has anyone had to take repeated doses of Nystatin during pregnancy for oral thrush? I had it early on at 13 weeks (related to long term inhaler use) and had it again just over a week ago, but I have finished the medication and it hasn't gone away. There is only a very small amount at the back of my throat but it is starting to get worse again.

Only issue is, the doctor made a point of mentioning that Nystatin safety/effects on the foetus haven't been tested, although it is only absorbed in very small amounts through the GI tract. I did read this the first time I took it, and I guess should have been more concerned if it bothered me then, but took it anyway and baby was all ok at the scan. It did make me consider not taking it a second time when the doctor started to go on about this, but I couldn't face weeks of not being treated.

However now I really don't want to ring back and keep having to take more medication, especially as I had this issue a few years ago and it went on and off for months despite treatment. The only way I solved the problem was to stop taking my preventer inhaler (which I can't really do at the minute as my asthma is a bit worse with being pregnant).

Now I'm not sure whether to just put up with the thrush for as long as I can (I have 8 weeks to go) or just ring the doctor back and potentially take repeated doses of Nystatin. Any thoughts/reassurance appreciated!

I posted an almost identical post a couple of days ago! I feel like I live on Nystatin!! I did speak to a Doctor about my concerns of repeatedly taking it and she was quite sure that, as it was safe for newborn babies, it would be safe during pregnancy!
I’ll keep watching with interest though and send you my sympathy! It’s bloody annoying!

Thanks it's nice to know someone out there is in the same position! You would think as well that it's safe if you can give it to your baby too so that's a bit more reassuring!

I'm 15 weeks pregnant and I have vaginal and oral thrush so I've just been given Nystatin by my GP. I'm also like you, worried about the unknowing affects on the baby. Has your oral thrush gone now? I'm asthmatic also Smile

@rebeccajdaniels I fight with mine on a weekly basis! Every time I get a sore throat starting it can see it starting on the inside of my cheeks, I start gargling saltwater. It seems to be holding it off sort of. The GP did give me a spacer for my inhalers though as she said that would help and it does seem to have slightly

rebeccajdaniels · 26/08/2020 18:46

@Sls668 hmmm interesting Hmm I have a spacer so I will give that a go! So glad knowing I'm not the only one lol!

Do you think it's safe to just use the Nystatin like mouthwash and just spit it out rather than swallow it? @Rosieeeee @Sls668

espressoontap · 26/08/2020 18:48

I'm sure you can use Miconazole gel whilst pregnant. I find Nystatin rubbish.

espressoontap · 26/08/2020 18:51

I might be wrong actually..,

AsMuchUseAsAMarzipanDildo · 26/08/2020 18:59

Nystatin is crap and most candida strains are resistant to it. Ask for miconozole or fluclonazole instead.

Not sure it's helpful but my newborn was prescribed nystatin for oral thrush at 2 weeks old. So if it's safe for newborns maybe it's not too bad inutero

Rosieeeee · 26/08/2020 21:00

I just put up with it in the end, I scraped it off with a cotton bud and use corsodyl mouth wash and it seems to keep it from getting worse. I have noticed if I don't eat sugar (sweets/chocolate etc) then it doesn't really grow. It's been tolerable doing it this way because it takes 2-3 days to grow back and is never bad so I can just scrape it off again. I've always used a spacer so that doesn't help me 🙄.

@rebeccajdaniels you could spit it out I guess but I found its such a small amount I just swallowed it....plus I always thought it might be further down my throat and swallowing it would get it down further maybe?

3 1/2 weeks till baby is due and then I'll be swigging the stuff haha

@Rosieeeee you're so lucky baby is due soon haha! I'm only 15+2 weeks so I've got ages to wait! At least you'll probably be rid of it when baby is here. Good luck at your birth Flowers

Thanks 😊, can't wait now. Your time will hopefully fly by! It's gone quickly for me despite doing nothing since March!
