Must have list for first time mum

Hello, I am putting together a list for shopping for my baby. I am a first time Mum so need to buy everything (although happy to buy some bits second hand). Can people tell me what essentials I need? I have made a rough list but want to ensure I have everything and avoid any extra bits which will never get used? Thank you to anyone who takes the time to contribute to this post. Thank you.

This thread is a little old now so some of the suggestions may be out of date, but if you’ve landed here looking for the ultimate baby essentials checklist, we’ve recently updated our newborn essentials article with the must-haves Mumsnetters think you can't live without when your baby arrives. We hope you find it useful. Flowers

I’ve got a four month old and was in the same position, here’s what I had to buy after he was born because i realised it would make things easier:

Bottle freezer bag ( keeps bottles at fridge temp for 8 hours, can go out without faffing).

Tommie tippee portable bottle warmer.

A sling (absolute must, life saver for clingy baby).

A bouncer, already had a swing but had nowhere to put him when in the kitchen as doesn’t like his pram.

Milton mini dummie steriliser.

Muslins (lots and lots).

Bibs (spit up constantly).

Lots of baby grows, forget outfits for a few months.

Infacol.

Milton wipes (I get through so many).

I second lansinoh, amazing stuff!

I've just had my 3rd (5 days old), and second everything everyone said about clothes sizing! Dd1 was 8lb4, dd2 9lb10 so I bought nothing smaller than 0-3, and dd3 was 7lb4 and everything is huge on her, so you never really know! Best to get a few bits and top up when they arrive.

Also too pumping tip so far: we weren't planning a 3rd so I gave away my medela electric pump. someone suggested a haakaa pump, it was about £12 from amazon and I used it for the first time last night to take pressure off as my milk is just coming in and it is amazing, no pumping at all, no noise and very quick. Not sure how good it'll be long term for expressing large volumes but I got 100ml off in total from both breasts and it made it much more comfortable very quickly and inexpensively.

I also got an owlett monitor for sleeping which is amazing (best purchase).

I worried so much with first, didn’t have a sleeping monitor of any kind and decided I needed to actually sleep this time. It has been a god send for me (I’m a bit of a worrier).

A decent baby carrier. I recommend the Tulu.
