co-sleeping or cot / moses basket?

Hey, FTM here and looking for experiences and advice re. baby's first bed please.

Is the snuzpod (or similar) worth it? I'm leaning towards a moses basket with a sleepyhead as I'm worried I might accidentally fall asleep while feeding but would be keen to hear from experienced mums!

I'm not hugely experienced ! Baby is 2 weeks old but I have a snuz pod 3 for bedtime and I love it ! So easy we also use a Moses basket during the day which is easy for snaps

Forgot to add ! I didn't purchase a sleepyhead as as far as I can tell not approved by the lullaby trust so decided to avoid

I co slept with my both of my two DS’. I had a Moses basket for DS1 & crib for DS2, they just would not sleep in them. I EBF so co sleeping was easier. We brought a superking bed so we all had space, not ideal & not what I would have chosen, but we needed to sleep. My two are 19 & 17 now, enjoy OP, it’s an amazing journey, I would do it all again if I could.

Sleepyheads and similar are not safe.
A moses basket won't last you very long. Snuzpod would be better or next to me. Learn how to feed lying down or co sleep safely if you think you'll fall asleep.

I had a crib as it lasts longer than a Moses basket.
However my crib was 35 years old as it was mine and my sisters. Snug pods are expensive I didn't find it hard lifting my little one in and out of the crib (I understand people who have had c sections could find this difficult)
Please don't get a sleepy head for overnight, they're only for day time naps where they are supervised. My health visitor warned us as there had been a death in our area due to suffocation.

I had a Moses basket for my first child but he just hated the fairy non bio prison. We did some unintentional co-sleeping to begin with but did have him in a crib as much as possible. By 8 months he was sleeping with us, and at 6, he mostly sleeps through now. (Sleeping is not his thing, never has been).

With my second we had a side by side crib and that worked so much better for me. We set it up in the spare room, and I moved in with him. He then went into the cot and when the sides came off slept in the spare (king size) bed.

I think the most important thing is to be flexible, thinking about cosleeping early on is good, because it means you’re not likely to end up doing it out of panic. If you can, I would move out of the shared bed and move to the spare room (if you have one). Then you can retreat as baby gets bigger (I started sleeping for the first part of the night in our bed and the rest with him).

In my experience both! Moses basket for downstairs/living space and a spuzpod/next to me for the bedroom. We kept the side up on our next2me and it was fine as I could still reach over while half asleep to pat baby. They generally out grow the baskets fairly quickly.

We did moses basket then straight into her cotbed.

Happycow · 20/07/2020 08:03

A moses basket really won't last you long at all.

The best combo for me and my friends has been next-to-me / snuzpod upstairs, moses basket downstairs for naps - but dont expect baby to be in it much beyond 6 weeks IME.

Next to me cot! I loved she's only just moved into cot at 7 months as can now climb! Moses baskets are very small so don't last very long and you don't feel as 'close' to baby and the sleepyheads personally think what a waste of money they are so expensive! And apparently not safe 🤷‍♀️

Thank you everyone, this is massively helpful!

Next 2 Me cots and similar are great and last a lot longer than a Moses basket. Pls don’t buy a Sleepyhead.

TwinkleStars15 · 20/07/2020 14:36

Safely co-sleep, look up the Safe 7. I’ve co-slept with my daughter since birth.

daydreamerfordays · 20/07/2020 16:55

Thanks everyone warning me against the Sleepyhead! I had no idea they were unsafe when everyone seems to have them!

Sleepyheads are a positional asphyxiation and rebreathing (suffocation) risk. In the US they used to be called dockatot. If you google dockatot deaths you will find they have been sadly linked to several. No prizes for guessing why they have changed their name.

Co-sleeping doesn't have to be an active choice, if you would prefer for your baby to sleep in a cot or moses basket primarily, you can definitely plan to do this but it is a good idea to look up the guidance for safe co-sleeping, so that if you're in a situation where you fear you might nod off with the baby, you can put yourself in the correct co-sleeping position. If you don't fall asleep, you can put the baby back in their cot as originally planned. If you do fall asleep, you will have done so with the minimal risk possible :) And you can move the baby to the cot when you wake up.
