Where do you put your newborn with a dog in the house???

I am not due until for a few months but something has really been playing on my mind. This is my first so it may seem like a silly question to all the experienced Mum's out there.
Imagine the situation: newborn baby, dog running around, husband out at work during the day. You want to do something like prepare dinner/lunch or sort some washing in the house (I'm sure there are lots of different tasks you need to put the baby down for) Where do you put the baby that is going to be in eye sight/ear shot that is not too low the dog can sniff and sit on them?
I saw these highchairs with "from newborn" which could be stood in the kitchen or dining room so high enough the the dog wont reach but they seem very expensive compared to the standard high chair.
Am I over thinking this situation or is it as simple as put them in a sleeping crib/Moses basket?

I'm pregnant & have a smallish dog who is perfectly fine with my friends' babies, but I'm obviously not going to leaving them alone together. Will be a mixture of baby in a sling when small, high chair when bigger & stair gates meaning I can keep the dog on one floor of the house when I want to (he has dens in 3 rooms, he'll be fine!). He's not crate trained and it's not something I'm keen to do now. Also planning to use the pram as a Moses basket as don't have the biggest house! My dog can't jump that high.

My son is 6 months old. Basically I used the Moses basket, so I could carry him from room to room when he was tiny, then I had 2 bouncy chairs, one upstairs and one downstairs that I could carry in one hand and move from room to room. Our dog is v lazy and doesn't bother much at all but still never leave them alone.

Sling, bouncer or in his high chair (we bought a Joie full recline one). Of the above, he liked precisely none of them, but they bought me the occasional 5 minutes Grin

lowlandLucky · 16/07/2020 21:09

Please please dont put a Moses basket on the worktop.

TimeWastingButFun · 16/07/2020 21:34

We used a baby gate from newborn on the kitchen/living room door so that we could always have somewhere inaccessible for the dog, so if I was cooking the baby would be in the kitchen area with me and dog shut in the living room and if I was in the living room and had to nip out I'd put the dog in the kitchen. The dog was absolutely lovely with the babies but it's always worth it because you just don't know...

TimeWastingButFun · 16/07/2020 21:36

Cooking the baby... grammar saves lives...

NiceTwin · 16/07/2020 21:40

As a pp said, we had a playpen and put baby in there in a bouncy chair.
It worked well.

We've got a Labrador and we were worried about this too, I bougbt a hauck sit n relax 2in1 highchair/bouncer which was fab because it could be lowered and raised where the dog couldn't lick the baby when I left the room.

Anyway 2 years later they're best of friends (always have been) and our dog is family...our furbaby! Shes always been involved as much as we she could with our baby, she would even sit in the bathroom at bath time bless!

Your dog will love it when it's time to wean, saves on the hoovering you too ha!

@habibihabibi

Interesting. Any links? Dr Google will also tell you that water isn't wet if you search the right words...

Lockdownmum1010 · 17/07/2020 14:27

We just used the moses basket, and when she was a bit bigger her swing chair. We've always had a stairgate across the kitchen door anyway so can shut the dog in for a short while if we need to, but so far we've had no issues (apart from a few sneaky licks of the baby!)

Dr273 · 17/07/2020 15:55

Mostly pram. Bed with sides up. But in all honesty, baby zone is on the floor, and dog keeps away. Baby is now getting grabby and dog really really keeps away.

Viletta · 17/07/2020 16:07

I've got same dilemma, planning to get chicco hug 4 in 1 for downstairs, it's sturdy enough and the dog won't be able to knock it over also high enough for him not to reach the baby. We'll also install these white gates around the house to separate dog and baby when baby is on the floor.

I found this really nice article @Crazyone84 hope it's helpful! This website in general has loads of good information on it, I've only just found it!

@SunInTheSkyYouKnowHowIFeel

Its the dog you need you to be putting somewhere, not the baby. How about put the dog in the garden, or in the utility room or something?
@SunInTheSkyYouKnowHowIFeel wow cruel, that won’t help on rainy/hot/freezing cold days.

And unless the utility room is massive then that’s equally cruel!!

Pets can’t just be cast aside because a baby has come along.

mintich · 17/07/2020 16:44

Baby sleeping in moses basket in living room. If I'm cooking in kitchen or something, I'll bring the dog with me or put him out in the garden to play. Or if baby is awake I will put the baby in the bouncer or swing and bring them with me instead of the dog. Either way, someone comes with you!

20viona · 17/07/2020 16:46

Baby's needs come Before the dog in my Eyes. I'd not expect the dog to
Be outside all Day but obviously the baby can't be outside either. Obviously people have been managing this for years hopefully
Some posters have advice for you.

Viletta · 17/07/2020 17:21

What's the best way to introduce dog to the newborn? I read that distance means respect and it's a good idea to let dog sniff baby's blanket or clothes but don't allow her to approach for the first 2 weeks. Not sure if this makes sense or should I allow the dog to see and sniff the newborn right away?

Antigonads · 17/07/2020 17:28

My rescue Spaniel is snoring at my feet. He was rehomed when his owner had a baby. He used to sleep with her but was made to sleep downstairs when the baby was born.

I hope it works out for you OP.

Sipperskipper · 17/07/2020 17:31

I also didn't want to shut my (lovely but very excited!) dog away when baby arrived.

I mainly had DD in her moses basket or bouncy chair on the kitchen worktop or table. Didn't use a moses stand as was worried it could get knocked over.

Dog loved the baby, and they are the absolute best of friends now (DD is 3).

Sheera1 · 17/07/2020 18:40

@Shmithecat2 this is actually a thing. I am surprised if you have a baby and a cat that you don't know about it to be honest. You can actually by cat nets to put over moses basket etc. I had two cats when I had DS and made sure same rules with dogs. Know where the cats are and no pets alone with baby. They heat seek and have been k own to smell the milk too. Now my cats were always miles away from DS as they treated humans an alien but it has been known to happen and people with cats and babies should be aware.

Sheera1 · 17/07/2020 18:49

*cat saw him as an alien should be what that reads and buy not by.

To clarify, no-one here has said that cats would intentionally suffocate a child or do things out of malice, but having you cat sleep in with your baby when you are not even supposed to have blankets near their face is very obviously risky and unhygienic to a near sterile baby. That is the point being made.

Dobbyssoc · 17/07/2020 18:56

@Viletta our dog sniffed our newborn straight away after I'd given her some fuss.
