If you were hospitalised/had a c-section for transverse/oblique/breech...

...at what gestation were you hospitalised, and when was your planned c-section booked for?

I had one standing breech and one transverse.
I wasn't hospitalised for either: no attempts were made to turn them.
Told 'both would turn' until 35 weeks then was booked for C-sections.

Went into labour with ds (standing breech) but stopped overnight.
Was given C-sec at 37 weeks exactly the next morning. V grateful as the cord was around his neck twice and he came out blue-ish, but ok.

With dd (transverse) I was keen to have a VBAC as I had toddler ds.
BUT Consultant was clear that the chance of cord prolapse with transverse was not a risk he wanted to take and she was born by CSec at 37wks 3 days. I was just very glad we were all safe and well.

What is your situation, OP?

Utini · 14/07/2020 16:06

DD was breech. I had a caesarean scheduled for 38+3 and was admitted the morning it was planned for.

ginsparkles · 14/07/2020 16:09

I had an extended breech delivery. I was being closely monitored due to breech presentation and limited fluids. They were aiming to get me to 36 weeks. She came early at 34 weeks

DarkHelmet · 14/07/2020 16:13

DD1 was breech, I wasn't hospitalised at all just booked for a c-section at 37 weeks and went in at 7am on the day.

Frank breech - delivered at 39 weeks. I asked for it to be earlier but they something about they leave it as long as possible for the brain to develop or something along those lines

Fatted · 14/07/2020 16:17

My eldest was oblique. They didn't actually know this until I had the c-section for other problems with my induction.

My youngest was also oblique. I think they knew with him around 30ish weeks. But I had a planned section for him anyway after the disaster I had with the first.

I was told it was something to do with their size (huge babies) and me being small.

bluemoon2468 · 14/07/2020 17:02

@OldLace @DarkHelmet were there any other reasons your c-sections were planned for so early, or was the only complication the positioning?

My baby is currently unstable transverse/oblique breech. We still have a while to go, so hoping baby will turn over the next month or so, but if not I've been told we'll likely be looking at hospitalisation for a few weeks and then and a planned c-section; however it hasn't really been made clear at what gestation they'd want to do that. Just want to plan ahead a little bit and get an idea of when I might be hospitalised from, rather than having it sprung on me at an appointment that they want me to come in the next day or something!

@bluemoon2468 My pregnancy was fine otherwise but she was my first baby so they had no idea how well I'd labour with breech presentation. She was delivered at 37 weeks because they didn't want to risk me going into labour and needing emergency intervention if they left it any later. I assume different consultants have their own ideas of when is best to plan the c-section, taking into consideration if its a first baby or if there were other complications etc.

OldLace · 14/07/2020 17:32

Ds was planned CSec @ 38 wks from about 34/5wks due to breech.
But @ 37 weeks I went in at 9pm thinking it was probs just braxton hicks but they said labour which then quietened down so they said they'd go ahead with the CSec, but the next day as they 'didn't want to wake the consultant overnight' - next day an emergency came in and bumped me till lunch, as ds was blue I'm glad they didn't wait longer.

Dd was planned C sec for around 38 weeks I think (they dont like to get them out before 37 weeks as this gives the lungs more time to mature) but I begged for 37 weeks on the dot as I'd been on crutches for months (bad SPD) and couldnt really walk at all by then.

I'd expect you would not be called for a CSec before around 37 weeks and would get some notice but it depends where you are / your NHS trust? Best to ask direct - if you can get a clear answer at this stage?

I was told: 'oh, baby will turn' until the last week.
I KNEW they wouldn't somehow.
Ds was a 'deckchair baby' (ie little legs tucked up)
Dd was came out like a round peach and still sleeps sideways!

lauraannle · 14/07/2020 17:35

No hospitalisation. C sec booked for some point in week 39. Unless necessary they don't like doing them pre 39 weeks I believe for the lungs.

Zisforstripyoss · 14/07/2020 17:36

I had a kneeling breech with DD2 after an emergency c section with DD1. My section was booked for 39+2 as that's when they could fit me in and I didn't have any other pregnancy issues or complications. I wanted to leave her in as long as possible, for her development, so I was happy with that!

plixy · 14/07/2020 17:51

Have they said why you would need to be hospitalised? Lots of people have breech or transverse baby and I've never heard of anyone having to stay in before. My baby was breech with one leg up one down so no chance of natural delivery. I was booked for section at 39+3 and just told to call them if I went into labour before that. I was in hospital a whole 2 hours before she was born.

bluemoon2468 · 14/07/2020 18:15

@plixy I was told that it was standard for transverse babies due to the very serious risk of cord prolapse and stillbirth/brain damage if your waters were to break (baby would need to be delivered under GA as quickly as possible). This exact scenario actually happened to my MIL when delivering my husband who was transverse, when her waters broke at 37 weeks, and he's lucky to be alive, so I'd be happy to be hospitalised to avoid that.

DD was transverse/unstable lie. I was admitted at 38 weeks and had my section at 39. My consultant did say that some consultants would admit earlier at 37 weeks and said I could be admitted then if I wanted to be.

DS was breech and I just went in on the day for my section at 39 weeks. Although he turned out to be transverse at the point when they went in to evict him!

With DD I was offered an ECV and they said if it was successful they would then induce immediately but I declined this.

I hope yours turns! My week in hospital was dull but not that bad really. Worth it for peace of mind in my opinion.

Fingerscrossed11 · 14/07/2020 19:50

@bluemoon2468
How many weeks are you?
I had midwife appointment today at 30+6 and baby is transverse. Also the fundal measurement was 28 so bit less than it should be. Did some googling when I got home and apparently if baby is transverse the fundal measurement will be lower. I have a 32 week scan next week as at my 20 week scan they found the placenta was low lying (posterior) so need to see if that’s moved and also to get baby measurements.
I’ve also read that if baby is transverse they admit you to hospital sooner incase of cord prelapse but I think they wait until 36 weeks to check and decide.

bluemoon2468 · 14/07/2020 20:14

@Fingerscrossed11 I'm 29 weeks so plenty of time to turn still, but midwife says as baby's dad was transverse at birth there's an increased risk of this baby not going head down either. Yeah I think 35-36 weeks is when they'll decide on a plan. Seems like a while off but also not really that long in the greater scheme of things!

@bluemoon2468
I hope it works out the way you want. At least they are on top of it and you are being monitored. I guess the best place to be would be in hospital if that’s how it works out, at least then you can relax and not worry. I may end up in same situation as you with my baby preferring to be transverse. I’m hoping he moves head down too. We still have time. Time does seem to be flying by, so I completely understand it’s not that long away really. Have you anymore scans scheduled to check baby position?

bluemoon2468 · 14/07/2020 21:30

@Fingerscrossed11 midwife said they'll book me in for a scan around 36 weeks if they think he's still not head down before booking in my c-section.

@bluemoon2468
Good luck.
You should maybe see if you could get 32 week scan.
