Nurse comment on girls naming trend

Had my consultant appointment and had my bloods taken. The nurse who took my blood was curious to know if boy/girl and if we have names. She commented she's heard quite a lot of old fashioned names lately such as: Florence, Norah, maeve, mabel.
Wdyt? Have you found similar in your area? Is it a style you would consider? (South Wales here)

My mum saw a list of my class of Year 7s and said they basically have the same names as the people in my Gran's care home. She was 96 at the time.

My own name is old-lady-chic before it became cool.

I think they have been growing in popularity for a while my daughter is 16 has a Florence, a Grace, two Madeleines, a Constance and an Honour amongst her friends.

SingingWren · 13/07/2020 20:41

I'm having a little boy next week and he'll be called Arthur, if he were a girl he would have been called either Mabel, Darcy or Daphne. I love older names, classic and timeless Smile

Tiredmum100 · 13/07/2020 20:45

I've know of a Hetty, Nancy, Edith, Dorothy.

Spottybluepyjamas · 13/07/2020 20:47

Old lady/old man name are so common these days - I used to love them but they're everywhere at the moment, it's a bit off putting (even though a lot of them are lovely!)

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 13/07/2020 20:49

Definitely seem more common these days. Not to my taste at all though. I like legitimate but more unusual names. Not ones I associate with my Nan.

Littlepond · 13/07/2020 21:04

My friend has an 18yr old Daughter called Mabel

delilabell · 13/07/2020 21:08

How long do we think it will be before

Tracy, Sharon, Pauline, Patricia, Sheila, Stacey, Hillary, Alison, Elaine, Gemma, Amanda, Rebecca, Sarah, Claire, Susan, Danielle, Laura, Lauren, Shelley, Jayne, Julia, Vicky, Louise, Duane, Christine, Rachel, Amy, Kelly, Gillian, Nicola, Andrea, Caroline, Donna, Hayley, Samantha, Melissa, Natalie, Sandra, Sian, Tanya, Tina, Zoe

etc come back into fashion? The grandparents of the present/future

ladycarlotta · 13/07/2020 21:14
@lowlandLucky you're probably right, I'm thinking back to my grandparents names, infact maybe ever great grandparents 😂
well I think that's why THIS generation of names is popular. Ivy, Nora, Maude, Olive etc - they're 'family names' but removed enough to feel romantic, rather than thinking of racist old Auntie Ada chain-smoking in her house coat.

Maybe in 50 years our grandchildren will be getting misty-eyed over little Barrys, Keiths, Sheilas and Dianes.

IndiaPlace · 13/07/2020 21:15

During lockdown, I've been researching my family tree. Some great names, Isadora, Ada, Ida, Theadora, Dorothea, Archebald, Percival, Francis and Franciscus

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 13/07/2020 21:18

pastabest I wonder this, will my grandchildren be Gary, Sharon, Linda and baby Mark Grin

About 40 years for the 60s/70s names and a bit longer for the 80s ones? Based on the fact that it's 1920s/30s names that are in now! I think for most people it's their great grandmothers' names rather than their grandmothers' that now seem romantically old, and certainly not their mother's!

I do think that some of the names listed on this thread (Thomas, Annie) aren't really 'old fashioned' names, they're just classic/timeless ones.

yes it is around here too. I have an Ada (spelt Ayda) and her cousin is called Ivy. I have always liked old fashion names much more than new ones though - I adore Mabel and if I had another girl this is what I would want although other half is not keen.

ShellsandSand · 13/07/2020 21:22

I know a Mabel, Pearl, Martha, Sybil, Ida, Arthur, Albert, Doreen all under 8 yo.

gumball37 · 13/07/2020 21:23

Sorry about the half post ugh.

Anyway. I'm in the US so it likely won't matter, but my daughter is Nora. It's a name my late mother loved and said if she'd ever had a (birth) daughter, that would have been her name... So I used it for my daughter in her memory

strawberrypip · 13/07/2020 21:24

@ladycarlotta no racist ancestor thoughts here lol

latheritup · 13/07/2020 21:24

My daughter has one of those names and she was born this year Grin

Headandheart · 13/07/2020 21:27

I don’t like granny chic names at all but they are popular on here. I think they have been in for so long they might be on their way out.

I was thinking recently about nice simple names like Jane or Ann would make a come back to contrast with all the flowery names too and sure enough I have seen them recommended a few times on the baby name threads.

SellFridges · 13/07/2020 21:32

I’d be more interested what will be the next wave. Those old lady names have been knocking around for at least a decade - Martha, Eliza, Edith. Even the hyper popular names like Olivia, Evie, Grace, Lily are of the same ilk.

I expect to see more Sarah, Laura, Catherine type names coming through soon enough. I suspect we will skip the Sharon and Tracy era.

CoffeeCup34 · 13/07/2020 21:35

I think those types of names are really popular now, I wouldn’t call them classic they’re more just names that were popular in the 30s and 40s. Personally I think most of them are quite ugly and I don’t know how anyone could look at a little baby and call them Arthur or Vera but each to their own.

I prefer proper classic names like Alexander or Catherine.
