Dental work in third trimester

I've been to the dentist this morning and have to go back to have a tooth taken out this afternoon. I'm 35+4 and will be having local anaesthetic which I'm now panicking about.

This tooth has been bothering me for the last 2 months and I'm really wishing I'd had it taken out sooner but I put it off hoping I'd get past the birth. Unfortunately, it can't wait any longer and now I'm reading things about it setting off premature labour!

Please someone put my mind at ease..... I'm absolutely terrified of dentists to start with and now got this added worry about harming my baby!

You are absolutely fine. I'm a dentist. It's just a local anaesthetic and won't harm the baby.
It's really important you get this sorted. If you don't, the complications might be more concerning, for instance, if you were to get an infection. Good luck x

@totalitarian thank you so much for your reply. My dentist is lovely and said exactly the same, it's just me having an irrational panic!

I'm not a dentist lol but I had to have a tooth pulled out in second trimester due to an abscess - they told me it's totally fine, and better out than trying to treat to hold off until after the birth. X

@wannabebump second trimester is the best time to get anything done apparently. I was told that but thought I'd try and put off till after the birth anyway and now I'm kicking myself for not getting it done then!

@sel2223 yes they said second trimester is best to me too, but they assured me if it had been later they would do it - I had lots of concerns and queries about it

@wannabebump it doesn't help that I've got a massive fear of dentists! I'm 37 and only ever had 1 filling and that was traumatic enough haha

@sel2223 I promise that if I can do it, so can you! And the relief once it's out will make you glad it's out x

@wannabebump thank you 🥰

Hi op, how did it go?

sel2223 · 13/07/2020 18:11

@heartonastring thanks for asking! It wasn't nearly as bad as I had built it up in my head but now sat with a swollen, numb face feeling sorry for myself haha!
Very pleased it's done though and baby is moving fine in there!
