How to tell the difference between normal pregnancy swelling and something more sinister?

I'm 35+2 today and have had slightly swollen feet and ankles since the middle of the second trimester.

This swelling has increased quite a lot in the last week or so to the point that the only footwear I can now wear is flip flops and even they leave a deep indent where the straps go across the top of the foot. I've also noticed my wrists and hands are now really swollen and uncomfortable as well.

Last night I saw a friend who I haven't seen since lockdown started and she commented on my face saying it looked really puffy and my eyes were now tiny. We were laughing about it but she suffered from preeclampsia in her pregnancy and she said, on a serious note, that i should get checked.

I mentioned it to my mother on the phone today (she's had 4 kids) and she just played it down saying swelling in pregnancy is normal.

So, I'm just wondering how to tell the difference between the two? When does swellong become something to worry about?

(I had my BP and urine checked last week. Urine showed +1 protein, BP was fine)

I think you should probably give triage a call and get your BP and urine checked, just as you’ve recently had protein detected and although a small amount of swelling is normal around your ankles, it should normally resolve itself somewhat if you were to elevate your legs for this evening😊

Slight swelling is totally normal as pp said, but from how you have described yourself I would definitely call your MAU and get yourself checked.
Better to be safe than sorry! All the best 💐

Thank you ladies. I've got a consultant appt on Tues so will be getting everything checked then anyway, do you think it's OK to wait till then?
Baby is moving fine.

I've got a feeling the puffiness on your face is the more worrying factor. If I were you I'd call and ask advice. You don't really want to mess around with pre eclampsia xx
