How much time off work did you have for Morning Sickness?

I'm currently 8 weeks pregnant and have had debilitating morning sickness since 6 weeks...

I only work 2 days a week in an office so feel really guilty that I'm off... but I can't get out of bed It's 24/7 morning till night without any let up.

On week 6 I called in sick myself the 2 days I work, and the doctor put me on cyclizine. It didn't work, then he bumped me up to a stronger medication that completely wiped me out and didn't help with the sickness either.

At 7 weeks the doctor signed me off work for two weeks, and basically said there's nothing else they can do if the medications aren't working.

I was 8 weeks yesterday and am meant to be back in work on Friday, I'm completely stressing out as I can't function as a normal human being and it's so early I don't want anyone to know. (Only my boss knows). I'm just so stressed at the thought of another month of this....

Did anyone else experience anything like this? What did you do about work?

Thank you!

Luckily for me, working from home during those weeks meant I could stay on the sofa with my bucket a lot of the time. If not for that, I think I would have had a LOT of time off this time. I’m just about able to cope now (with some assistance from cyclizine) at 19 weeks.

Speak to your boss - do you have the sort of job that you can do from home?

I only worked twice a week as well but had horrific hyperemesis and had a fair bit off but I couldn't help it...work were pretty good but I hated calling in.

I was hospitalised once as well so then I was signed off by the doctor

Don't worry it can be really awful and then the weakness on top id challenge anyone to work through it...it's tough

Hope it eases up for you soon

You have to do what is right for you and only you know how you feel and how your able to function. Some ladies have debilitating symptoms, some ladies have sickness but can function and some ladies have no symptoms at all!
Hope it eases soon! X

I had hyperemesis with two of my pregnancies. With the one where I was working I was signed off from 6 weeks to 22 weeks as I was unable to keep even water down most days and couldn’t function at all.

You have my sympathies as it is truly awful and in my darkest days my mind even went to considering whether I cld continue with the pregnancy. Really hope yours eases soon OP. Your little bundle will make it all worth it I promise

I spent 4 weeks crying on the toilet floor, no way I could have gone to work. Finally found a medication that made me feel a bit more human and it eased off a bit to the point I didn’t need meds around 16 weeks but I still vomited every single day until she was born

I got sent home a few days and it was expected that I'd run in, straight to the loo to be sick every day. I was a civil servant and on signing on days I'd end up running to the loo when the less fragrant claimants came in. I felt terrible about that but it was either run or throw up on my desk. I was sick until baby was delivered and started maternity three weeks earlier than planned as the sickness really took its toll.

I went to work and spent my time running back and forth from the bathroom because my manager insisted that morning sickness was all in the head and was awful to me. Don't be an idiot like me, ondansetron really helped and I was able to cope with only being sick a few times a day for the rest of the pregnancy.

mumfeelingguilty · 11/07/2020 19:56

I went in late twice as I had literally vomited all over myself while driving to work. Apart from that I didn't take time off despite having awful sickness and loosing over 2 stone in the first few months.

I should have relaxed and stopped pushing myself so hard to go in; one of my colleagues was pregnant at the same time and took about 3 months off for morning sickness. I was no better thought of for being in / she was no worse thought of for being off.

If you can't work, be off. It's ok.

With DC2 I was signed off between 8 and 13 weeks - couldn't keep anything down it was grim.

With DC3 luckily that phase of pregnancy was during the summer holidays ( I teach) but I was off work from 30 weeks due to crippling SPD.

Don't feel guilty. You have to look after you and your baby.

3 months. It was intolerable.
