Hi. I’ve recently been diagnosed with GBS after it was picked up during another check. Has anyone had any experiences with it? How long after we’re you in hospital? Can water births still happen as I believe I will be given IV antibiotics during the birth? Thank you :)

I was my friends birthing partner who was diagnosed with gbs, once her waters went she was admitted and put on an antibiotic drip, she had one every 4 hours until she gave birth, I'm not sure how a water birth would work out you're best asking your midwife, after her babys birth they where kept in 24 hours to monitor the baby and let home, good luck

Hi @newmumtobe66, I've also been diagnosed with GBS. Waiting for a proper chat with my midwife on Saturday but I found this helpful in the meantime

It says you should still be able to have a water birth so 🤞 (I'm also hoping for one).

My midwife said on the phone that so long as they get the iv antibiotics into you at least 4 hours before the baby is born then you don't need to stay in at all. If they don't manage to then you stay in for 12 hours for monitoring.

Hi, I was diagnosed and had a home birth and could have a water birth too. I chose not to have antibiotics and we monitored the baby after.

I had antibiotics and because my waters had broken without me knowing, dd had to have them for 5 days after.

I think I’d you don’t have complications like that though there’s no reason why you can’t have a water birth

Good point @Sunshineeeee - important to remember that the treatment they offer is just an offer and it's your choice.

I was planning a home birth too but was told they don't recommend it as they can't give antibiotics at home.. After doing some research I've chosen to take that advice but it's ultimately up to you.

You can still have a water birth in the hospital I'm at with GBS :)
