So all my babies have been sma, however looking around now how and gate is a fair bit cheaper at least 4 pounds locally .... Is it just snobbery if I decide to go with sma I've not had any issues with sma at all, wondering what formula people are feeding x

All formulas are pretty similar. Go with whatever you're happiest with. We use Aldi mamia because it was the cheapest we could find and I have one locally. DS gets on well with it. If you want to change then you can but if you're happy with SMA then there's no harm in sticking with it.

I'm using c&g just because it's always available at my local shop where other brands are often not, and they have the handy starter packs for hospital. Go with whatever you're happy with, they are all basically the same x

BeMorePacific · 08/07/2020 07:54

They are very heavily regulated, so have to have very similar ingredients. Go for the cheaper option x

Mmsnet101 · 08/07/2020 08:01

The only differences are added vitamins that the baby can't actually process or benefit from more often than not, and the advertising budget. There's a panorama documentary on this from around a year ago that I watched while pregnant, worth watching.

We use aldi mamia which is great, made in same factory as aptimil but half the price and I find mixes better/less frothy.

Definitely go for the cheaper option. You will be using formula for months. If you can stock up on it by looking online rather than just at the supermarket.

We always made sure we had 2 tins surplus in at all times just in case I dropped one (clumsy) or there were supply issues.

You can work out how many tins of formula you go through in a month, work out the increase in consumption and then cost up paying the extra for sma. To be honest I didn't know there was a snobbery about formula brands. I just used what was cheapest, as PP said they are strictly regulated so cannot be that different.

Which did a survey, said all claims of closest to breastmilk and "gold advanced system" are just marketing gumf. www.which.co.uk/reviews/formula-milk/article/choosing-the-right-formula-milk/are-some-formula-milk-brands-better-than-others

Just be grateful your child doesn't need a formula on prescription which Ds2 did. Now that's a pain in the arse to get Grin

I asked this question not so long back. I was told to watch Dispatches on Chantelle 4 and there is an episode on formula.
Basically they are all the same and the cost between them is mega!
Seriously watch it! Total eye opener for me!
It's on 4 catch up

I'll be using cow and gate this time, with dd I used aptimal til they changed the recipe and it gave her very bad reflux when I changed to cow and gate after much research, as many others have said they are all pretty much identical bar the price tag!

jdy123 · 08/07/2020 21:39

I've decided to use cow and gate as in my local Lidl it is only 6.99 and it's going to be easy to get hold of as other supermarkets sell it too!
I was considering Aldi's as well but I was thinking be easier to get a brand that I can buy in normal shops too!

schafernaker · 08/07/2020 21:40

We started with cow and gate with DD as we had spoken to the paediatrician and he had told us they were all the same. DD then developed awful reflux and the first port of call was to change formula, so we went with the next cheapest SMA (which helped a little). The Paed did tell us to avoid comfort milks, instead we had gaviscon and ranitidine prescribed for her 😊 and dealt with an awful lot of vomit! Yay preemies!!

schafernaker · 08/07/2020 21:41

Also just a thought, check how much is in the tin if it seems much cheaper, if I remember rightly you can get different sized tins of cow and gate so it’s false economy to get the less expensive one as it works out more expensive gram for gram

Seasiderabbit · 08/07/2020 22:18

Cow and gate with both.

mylittlesandwich · 08/07/2020 22:33

@lockdownpregnancy that was probably me. I think it's a great episode. I'm a one woman army to stop people paying up to £15 a tub for formula.

Billyjoearmstrong · 09/07/2020 08:02

Cow and gate. It’s the cheapest and available pretty much everywhere.

fool11 · 09/07/2020 08:21

Whatever you are happiest with and baby is happy to eat. My dd had a reflux and didn't like many, i was BF in combo with Hipp organic.

Thatsanicepear · 09/07/2020 09:03

I always use the SMA Little Steps formula. I think it's £8 a tin in Asda or Tesco (cheaper than the other SMA types). It's by far the least frothy of all the formulas I tried and my son has had no issues with it at all.
