Hi ladies! So I've just had my 28 week MW appointment.
Urine tested, bloods taken, BP checked, but still not a whiff of a GD test?!?!?!
She isn't even tracking the growth of my baby as my hospital haven't given me a chart!!!! She said she would get the hospital to mail me one out and she will start tracking baby once I've got the chart!
Even though it was my first appointment where she was going to do it she said there's no point as she doesn't have a chart to write it on? As lovely and caring as my MW is I'm stunned!
And as for a GD test it's just not going to happen!!! AT ALL!!!!
My anxiety is going through the roof over it and I wanted to know if there is anything I can do about it?
Do I speak with my GP and voice my concerns and see if they will give me a test?
Whilst I don't have a family history of GD it's really making me worry that all of the checks on me and baby that should be done, aren't!
As a FTM I'm terrified that if something is wrong no one will know until it's too late! 😭😭😭

GD is mainly managed by carb intake, if your super worried about it limit your carbs to 40-60g per meal just to be sure. They don’t tend to do the test until 24-30 weeks though, so you’ve still time to be called in for it.

I had it and managed a diet based control and DD was 6lbs 4.
The main worry is just a larger baby so increased risk of needing a csection.

Hiya lovely,

If you have no risk factors for gestational diabetes then they won't test you for it. I got tested at 28 weeks but only because of a family history of diabetes. I think they also test if your bmi is high or if your bump is measuring larger than expected.

I wouldn't worry too much about them not testing you - they don't do it for everyone x

mrs2468 · 07/07/2020 12:15

Hi sorry you are feeling anxious. You only need a GD test if you fall into specific risk categories. Did you ask your midwife for one and she refused and explained why not? Why do you feel you would like one?

mable88 · 07/07/2020 12:15

Were you told at your booking in appointment that you’d have a GD test? My understanding is that it isn’t offered as a routine test; it’s either decided at your booking in appointment triggered by a factor such as your weight, or you get one later on if something shows up in your urine sample. So if it hasn’t been mentioned then I would assumed it’s because you don’t need one doing. I do think she should be at least measuring your bump, she could have written it in your notes to add to the chart layer, I’d have thought.

TheGirlWhoLived · 07/07/2020 12:16

They are doing my GD test via a blood test in my booking appt at 9 weeks

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 07/07/2020 12:17

You would only routinely be screened for GD if you meet certain criteria for risk factors. However, every time you have your urine dipped they are checking for glucose and if you were to have persistent glucose in your urine then you would be tested.

Yaty · 07/07/2020 12:17

I dont think GD is a routine test unless you have risk factors. My full test was cancelled but done via bloods at 28 weeks, so maybe it was included for you I would check?

DobbieFreeElf · 07/07/2020 12:19

My trust don’t do a GD test as standard now. As I understand if you only get tested if you have a close family history of diabetes. This has changed from my pregnancy in 2016 when it was standard.

Yaty · 07/07/2020 12:20

Also with the growth charting I think each chart is personalised to your height a d weight so makes sense she didn't measure as would not be able to plot a result accurately. If you are feeling ok and not having problems I'd try not to worry,I'm sure you'll have the chart for your 31 week check.

SqidgeBum · 07/07/2020 12:21

Hi. I am pretty sure on my first baby 2 years ago they didnt trust for GD. They only test for it if there is risk factors. As PPs have said, the urine check is part of checking for these risk factors. Try not to panic too much. With no risk factors your chances of GD is very low

Fatted · 07/07/2020 12:26

GD test is only done if you are at risk of GD. If you are normal BMI, no family history of diabetes, bump is measuring fine and no glucose in your urine samples then you don't get one.

I had them in both pregnancies because I'm fat. With my first, I had the test at 28 weeks, results were fine and no further issues.

With my second, I had them every two weeks from 28 weeks. I had urine consistently in my samples, my baby was measuring consistently two/three weeks ahead and my results from the first test were borderline. So there was a need. Trust me, you will get one if you actually needed one.

Fatted · 07/07/2020 12:27

Urine consistently in my samples 🤣🤣🤣 glucose I mean!!

Jupiter15 · 07/07/2020 12:30

I’m pregnant with my 3rd and have never been tested for GD, it’s never been mentioned. If you are worried though why don’t you ask your midwife about it?
It does seem strange that she didn’t measure your bump just because she doesn’t have your chart. She could have just noted the measurement to plot once she has it.

Thank you all for your comments, it's most reassuring that it's not just being forgotten about.
I haven't been weighed since my booking appointment but my BMI was fine at that point and the only person in my family with diabetes is my grandad, so I'm clearly low risk.
Didn't realise about the urine tea checking for glucose so that's good to know!
I must say I do feel better about it all now 😁😁😁
Thank you so much for taking the time to reply to me 🥰🥰

I have a grandparent with diabetes which means I will have to be tested, do they know your grandad has diabetes? Every area seems to do things differently though!
lockdownpregnancy · 07/07/2020 13:54

@Pinkpepper9 they do know as I told my MW at my booking in appointment and she said because I'm second generation and it's not my parents then I'll be ok. I did also tell her I didn't know about whether my Dad has it, as I have nothing to do with him but she didn't seemed phased tbf! 🤷‍♀️

My area are just doing the blood test now, not the full GD test and that's only for those deemed 'at risk'
I was informed I'd be getting tested for it at my booking in appt due to BMI and it was done with my 28 week bloods.

sel2223 · 07/07/2020 15:14

Oh, and my grandad had diabetes too but I got told the same about being second generation. I was literally only tested because of BMI
