Feel so guilty about my first trimester diet

I’m really struggling with the guilt of my first trimester diet. I’m 8+4 and can only seem to stomach crap foods! I have crunchy nut cornflakes for breakfast and marmite on toast for lunch but in between it’s sour sweets and salt and vinegar crisps due to my nausea. Fruit or veg has barely passed my lips for weeks and I feel so guilty given this is such an important phase and feel like I’m just feeding the baby constant sugar Sad

Honestly do not worry, I was the same with both my girls and they are healthy! Just eat whatever you can keep down and pick up a healthy diet from the second trimester onwards xx

OrangeGinLemonFanta · 06/07/2020 13:13

I lived on cheese and onion crisps and orange fanta in my first trimester with dd. She seems unscathed. Don't worry, the baby will suck all the nutrients it needs directly from your body.

sel2223 · 06/07/2020 13:14

Don't. The first trimester is just about getting through it.

I had awful sickness and nausea and survived almost entirely on salty snacks and fizzy sweets. The doctor said eating something is better than nothing so just go with what you can manage and just make sure you're taking on plenty of fluids.

I started taking pregnancy multi vitamins which eased the guilt a bit.

mylittlesandwich · 06/07/2020 13:16

I could only stomach beige food until pretty much 12 weeks. Then I felt better and ate better. DS is just fine. If he needs anything he can't get from your diet he'll take it from stores in your body.

mintich · 06/07/2020 13:16

I'm like this now and with my two previous pregnancies! Dont worry, your baby will be fine!!
It does get better and you will be able to stomach more. All I want at the moment are ready salted crisps and McDonalds fries!!

topoftheshops · 06/07/2020 13:18

I wouldn't worry, I lived on toast with weird things like mustard or HP sauce on it, salted popcorn, and sour Haribo. Take a multivitamin and just make sure you get something down!

I did find that when I wanted to force myself to have vegetables, it helped to cover things in something vinegary. So salad with lots of balsamic vinegar or Branston pickle.

Teacaketotty · 06/07/2020 13:20

I think it’s a universal thing - I lived off cheese jacket potatoes for the first trimester! Don’t worry about it, anything is better than nothing x

AllTheWhoresOfMalta · 06/07/2020 13:23

Another one who spent the first 20 weeks eating crisps and drinking fat coke. Kids are fine.

Twizbe · 06/07/2020 13:24

This is so common. I couldn't stomach food in general in the first trimester.

MinesALatte · 06/07/2020 13:24

Thank you so much ladies, so comforting to know I’m not on my own! Haribo tangfastics are just to die for right now!
I ate half a satsuma the other day and the nausea bus hit me head on so that didn’t go well haha

Eat whatever you can.

My diet was terrible throughout both my pregnancies. I vomited everything and so lived almost exclusively off chip shop chils and Mini milks. Both children born extreme healthy, and now eat any fruit and veg they're offered.

peachypetite · 06/07/2020 13:29

Take a multivitamin and you’re fine. Recommend liquid pregnacare (but don’t take on empty stomahc)

MinesALatte · 06/07/2020 13:32

I was taking seven seas trying for a baby but have recently moved to seven seas pregnancy

I lived on rich tea digestives and any other white carbs with my first baby and chocolate and diet lemonade with my second. Once the sickness subsides you can make up for it. Also the midwife told me not to worry about the baby as the baby will take all the goodness there is and it’s actually our bodies that suffer as were left with the rest.

DerbyshireGirly · 06/07/2020 13:35

All I ate throughout my first trimester was plain pasta, with cheese on as I started feeling better. My baby was born in rude health and is such a strong little girl already at three months. I did take the Pregnacare vitamins throughout but your body knows what it's doing. Healthy babies are born even in famine and war.

BuffaloCauliflower · 06/07/2020 13:39

Don’t worry at all! Baby will be just fine. I didn’t really have nausea but did have lots of food aversions in the first trimester, ate lots of buttered bread, buttered rice, buttered pasta and salmon (was grateful my body accepted some good fats!) maybe chocolate. No veg. Not much at all. I’m back to eating normally in the second trimester.

ttigerlilly · 06/07/2020 13:44

Don't feel guilty OP, I found that some days I could barely eat a proper meal at all due to the nausea, so I snacked a lot on plain carby foods like toast and crisps as that was all I fancied. I also had such a hankering for cola which normally I don't even like that much!
For me it did get a lot easier as time went on, in my third trimester I couldn't get enough of apples, pineapple and avocado.

MotherofKitties · 06/07/2020 14:08

Don't stress OP. Just being able to keep anything down during your first trimester is a plus, so what you actually eat isn't going to have much affect. If you can keep on top of folic acid/pregnancy vitamins and you'll be fine x

Indigogirl88 · 06/07/2020 14:19

Cheese on toast here I just tried to only eat two slices rather than 4 😂 I'm about to start 3rd trimester and 2nd trimester I have ate a lot better

CEBT · 06/07/2020 14:47

I'm 8+6 and currently going through the same thing! I feel guilty too so you are not alone. I was super healthy before I was pregnant and ate at least 5 portions of fruit and veg a day. Now the thought of anything remotely healthy makes me feel sick. I only want to eat white bread, crisps, pizza...basically anything unhealthy. I'm also hungry all the time so eating so much more than usual. I feel bad about it but I can't physically change it, so I totally feel your frustration. I'm hoping that in the next few weeks the nausea and food aversion might pass and I can make up for it then!

Billyjoearmstrong · 06/07/2020 15:43

I’ve been pregnant three times and in each one I’ve lived off what ever I could keep down without puking back up all the way though.

32 weeks now, some days I manage a protein shake, others a pizza.

Babies are very effective parasites - it doesn’t matter what you eat. They will take every little bit they need from your body and stores.

It’s only 9 months anyway - if you’ve always had a healthy (ish) diet yourself you will be okay, our bodies are great at keeping stores. I’ve come out pretty much unscathed myself - bloods always perfect despite not eating or just having bits of crap and babies have been healthy. Don’t worry!

CluelessBaker · 06/07/2020 18:49

Honestly, don’t worry about it. The baby takes the nutrients they need from your body stores. You won’t be doing them any harm with a junky first trimester diet - that’s very common, lots of women eat whatever they can stomach and it’s rarely health food!

Keep taking your vitamin and drink plenty of water and you will be fine Flowers

MinesALatte · 07/07/2020 00:22

Thank you everyone Smile really quite (pathetically 😂) pleased to say today I craved a salad for dinner and ate all of it! Cucumber, lettuce, peppers, tomatoes, potatoes, beetroot and egg! Feeling great 😂

... and I’ll just causally brush over the doughnut I had for pudding 😂

I’m now 38 weeks, all I could eat until 10 weeks was rice crispies, Quorn nuggets, fried rice, and peking sauce! As long as you are taking your vitamin you’ll be fine X

Sassy14 · 07/07/2020 21:50

I was exactly the same as you worrying about my diet but try not to worry hun, as long as your eating something Smile
